  • Awesome music!

  • that vid is awesome

  • The onlydifference between this guy and every other lego animation director: Lighting. And it makes ALL the difference.

  • the air purifiers made me think the polytech made some kind of soilent green

  • @TediI47

I think the mention of high population in a sci-fi detective story it what brought up images of soylent green for me.

  • @legoluvver Soylent Green was a major inspiration. (That and 'Silent Running')

  • Wall-E are copiers

  • nuclear reactors don't release gases from their tops. its all contained within the reactor. so some of this vid. is unrealistic. and I'm pretty the gov. would have regulated the amount of emissions cause they're so many hippies).

  • @skordijhl I'm amused by the assertion that only some of this video is unrealistic. Although nuclear smokestacks most definitely do emit steam from their tops, try a Google images search of "Nuclear Smokestack" for several thousand examples of this.

It's set in the future, though; the government in the fictional setting of the film may be quite different from our own.

  • @SmeagolStudios Man u really did u'r research for the production of this short film. Figure of speech.

  • u should sue walle for taking your idea

  • @darklordmario43 The idea for Wall-E was made way back in 1995, I don't see how he could sue them.

  • @jstudios98 I think the majority of the similarities to Wall-E are due to us both getting ideas from the 1972 film 'Silent Running'...the rest is coincidence, since Wall-E came out the day after I finished this

  • @jstudios98 Its worth a shot

  • @jstudios98 wall e sucks balls and so does the rest of disney

  • @elfskater98 How does it suck? Because you don't understand it? Also, Disney did not make it, Pixar did, Disney has nothing whatsoever to do with the actual production of the films that Pixar make (except for sometimes when they get voice actors).

  • @jstudios98 are you retarded. Pixar is the Cartoon part thats why its called Disney Pixar fucking dumbass.

  • @elfskater98 Not only are you wrong, but your comment makes no sense whatsoever. -_-

  • @jstudios98 how does it not make sense?

  • @jstudios98 How does it not make sense?

  • i have asked this question to many great animators all totally bringing me down. for starters i do have chroma key if that is needed. How do you make lego people jump or objects thrown at others people(like a ball) that kind of stuff please tell me i want to do my works like yours one day i am a subscriber and i would really like to know

  • will you decipher the OnyxCode ...

  • make a second part

  • awseome make a second part

  • now this is ironic a wold thats years in the future and people dont even know what plants are see in realty plants are dying and in this they are born and now people couldet care about plant sence there are 5,000000000000000000000000 in a commen state but hear they are the rarest thing in the world .gues we should of lisend to the hippeys . and now they are albeing taken and eleagle .

  • I Say this video is about 80% Animated Backgrounds, 10% Lego And 10% Human Pollution.

  • @FrameByFrame1000 There's some greenscreen...but the majority of it's real sets

  • this is rely good you should get more views im subing!

  • Wall-E totally stole ideas

  • @FettJason

    Walle started production in '95

  • your right it does remind me of wall-e but at the same time it is completely different

  • awesome

  • Wow, now more trees on Earth? How would they be alive?

  • @ProduuctsfromP air purifiers

  • Fascinating! Amid the flashy effects, I like the physical ones the best, especially the raindrops and the various lighting techniques. I'm currently working on a lego stopmotion 50s film noir spoof, so this was a vast source of inspiration.

  • these videos are great!!!!!

  • what programm did you use for the green screen and for making the peoples mouth move and them blincking the eyes.

    Thanks a lot great movie

  • @2000mroliver mouths were done with Carrara and Axogon Composer, compositing was mostly done in Compositelab

  • This needs to be made into a full movie, excellent flow throughout the movie :D

  • I am going to make a movie where in a future where the planet looks similarly like Coruscant. Which means I have to buy a greenscreen program, then Carrara, before being able to film real lego figures with a Coruscant-like backround?

  • @legocompassstudios well...I have been using Carrara and/or its predecessor Ray Dream on and off for 13 years. So just owning the software isn't going to be enough, learning how to use it and create the kind of imagery you want to make could be a pretty long process.

There are lots of free greenscreening options, for instance CineGobs, though I haven't tried it it's supposed to be good.

  • Did you have to use greenscreen in order to put the buildings made in Carrara on to the movie? Or was it just to add some extra footage?

  • @legocompassstudios well...for the look at the buildings in the commercial at the beginning, nothing was real so no greenscreen was involved. The scene with Carl and Jack on the balcony had a greenscreen.

  • What did you program did you use to make the smoke towers and buildings?

  • @legocompassstudios Carrara

  • @SmeagolStudios So, you used greenscreen, right? And after reading your website, you said that you used an entirely different program for doing greenscreen. You used the animation from Carrara and imported it onto the greenscreen program. Am I right?

  • @legocompassstudios the buildings weren't greenscreened because they were computer generated. I did greenscreen footage on top of the footage made in carrara though using other software, yes.

  • this is an awesome video. :)

  • i know but it looks alot like walle

  • continue making videos

  • how did you make the poop at 2:40 was it a 3d effect or a sorta clay?

  • @SpencerReedBass the sludge was computer generated.

  • @SmeagolStudios oh cool do you think you can tell me what program?

  • @SpencerReedBass I used Carrara mostly, there's some explanation in the "making-of" article linked in the vid description, also a full list of software I use in the FAQ on my channel

  • the animation and backrounds were fantastic

  • Hey man I want to start making brickfilms and I need help can you help???

  • Lmao, you sound like bane off the matrix :P

  • I've seen loads on brickfilm and this is the best I've ever seen. 5 stars.

    P.S. Plz make a sequel.

  • nice vid

  • Awesome

  • Great animation, but it was just too much like WALL-E.

  • @jay1995100 Heh. I made this before Wall-E came out. Similiarities aren't necessarily coincidental though because Wall-E and this film were both inspired somewhat by the 1972 movie "Silent Running."

  • ...why didn't you just find a gray hat? Are they that hard to come by?

  • @DudeWheresMyMind LEGO doesn't make the hat in gray, just brown when I made this film, though it's now available in black and tan too. No gray though.

  • @SmeagolStudios - I see. I had that problem with a hair piece not too long ago. My solution was just going out and buying a small can of spraypaint with the color I needed.

  • @DudeWheresMyMind Yeah, if I make a sequel to this I'll probably buy a second hat and paint it gray, and use that for all but the closeups. The surface of the hat loses some detail when it's painted, unfortunately.

  • How did you do the water around the Beached whale?

  • @Soniczeldaking I created it in Carrara using an ocean simulator primitive thingy.

  • lol it was a plant...

  • bast lego stop mo

  • howd u do the rain?

  • Sprayed water on the set with a spray bottle.

  • @SmeagolStudios

How about the animation for the rain itself? I read your description about Unrenewable on your website, but I can't recall reading anything about the actual rain besides spraying your minifig with a spray bottle.

  • @razorxxlego as in the rain in the air? The rain in the air was done in Sqirlz water reflections, I basically rendered it there on a black background then composited it on top of the footage in Axogon Composer. (Any program that can composite one video layer on top of another with a "screen" blending mode would work)

  • fantastic. Finally a serious film using LEGO.

So many things can be done.

Great editing the cgi didn't stand out at all.

  • truly astonishing

  • Wow. Just wow. 5 Stars.

  • WOW... that really has blown me away... that was truly amazing...

  • is it a real movie?

  • youre very serious and use a lot of big words

  • So basiclly, in the suitcase was the only plant in the world? BTW Really good video

  • Comment removed

  • Cool!!!

  • what did you use for animating the mouth?

  • OMG im totally amazed!!!! if i would have a film company i would pay for you to join:))

How did you created the arm-movements so smoothly? taken pictures in every little move?

  • Thanks, and yes.

  • wat do u use 4 editing

  • Ah, I love how that looped in on itself. <3

  • what software did you use to compose the music?

  • Acoustica Mixcraft

  • That was awsome ! Gad hell so cool

  • 100 stars if a could its awesome the softwars is great.

  • WOW!! Very good! This is an awesome video. 5 stars to you.

  • this is sthe best movie i have ever seen i hope there is another one soon or if there is i am all over it

  • Most of the annotations go off the edge of the screen, and I can't read them

  • Sorry about that, that would be a result of the cropping tag I'd used to get rid of the bars on the sides after the facts. Removed the tag, should work now.

  • Yeah, it's much better, I can now fully read your comentary, thanks. and nice animation by the way

  • nice job, very realistic and good point, maybe we'll end up like that in the future, i guess this is how it ends.

  • how did you do the cgi

    what software did you use

  • Carrara

  • FANTASTIC, what programes did u use?

  • There's a list of software in my channel, Carrara being the 3D animation software.

  • In the first scene with Jack did you Chroma Key it in

  • Yeah, the rest of that shot was computer generated.

  • is there going to be a second? this was awesome! but I didn't really catch that it actually "ends" there?

  • I'm glad you added the annotations.

  • is there going to be a second film???

  • the snoring at 1:55 sounds like my dad. like you recorded him in his sleep.

  • Haha, it was actually my dad recorded while he was sleeping.

  • you should go pro

  • wat id understand the end?

  • What software do you use to animate the faces? Do you have to scrap off the mouths?

  • I used a program called 'Axogon Composer,' and filmed with blank faces, so the rest of the face was also added in post. The making-of link in the vid description may be of interest to you.

  • I didn't know you could use Axogon to make that... I've only used it once to add lightsabers anyway. And I did use your tutorial that time! Thanks

  • i love youre vids favorite!!!

  • but i think after effects is better thand carrara studio

  • Can't really compare them, Carrara is a 3D animation program and AE is a 2D compositing/editing/effects program. It's like saying Word is better than Excel.

  • i understand you but im just saying thed the most ppl use after effects if you know zwan2 he use after effects and he makes realy good vids !!!

  • yeah, I use both types of programs for mine, they serve completely different purposes

(I use Blender and effects lab pro)

  • You should make a sequel to Unrenewable. That would be awesome.

  • I would like to make a sequel eventually, I'm working on something else right now though.

  • cool

  • I love this. At the end it says "Enter your text here" above your name XD!

  • Err...whoops...fixed.

  • I like this film.

  • A balanced meal of sugar and marshmallows...

    VERY healthy rofl

  • Wait, at 4:26 he used a stud to communicate. But at 8:56, he had a phone!

  • Yeah, the first one was a phone on speaker.

  • ah i get it now polytech stole a government project involving the plant because they thought that it would give them an edge in the air purifying business. but the prototype was stolen by the idealist who was most likely working for the omni corperation. but polytech wanted him declared insane so they could cover there tracks but they still got caught. at least thats what i think....

  • he does. Look at the HD version of the film.

  • Thanks Philip. You gave me an idea.

  • Wow I love this film.

  • lots and lots of post-production editing!

  • You know, you could of tinted Jack's hat with a marker. But I guess you didn't want to mess up the hat. Or accidentally mess up Jack's head with undried marker ink. I know that happened to me.

  • I like your film.

  • He's human too.

  • There Should Be A Lego Youtube Award Something Simmiliar To Oscar's Acedamy Award and if there was. This Should have a nominations of Best Picture,Best Script,Best Special Effect,Best Voices/Cast,Best Animation,Best Camera, Best Choices Of Music, Best Animation Movie. That Is Like 7 Nominations And Should Win It And Get Rewarded!!!

  • There's something called the Bafta on our

    brickfilmers forum.

  • how do you make these videos

  • There's a link to the "making of" I wrote about this video in the description.

  • it sucks that this one got more views than the hd version

  • I think this is a sensational film.

  • i know he's making a new video, not a sequel.

He told me something about action scenes...

  • It's great, but...Bane's still my favorite.

  • Dude you rock. nice vid!!!!!

  • Vary good!!!! :) ;) As one brickfilmer to other I'm vary impressed. ;)

  • Dick Flatfoot, Blade-runner detective.

    Nice.

  • Do you want to make a lego movie with me?I'm 9 yrs old.

  • Thanks, but I've already got a lot of other projects in the works. If you're looking for advice on how to get started, I recommend bricksinmotion(dot)com

  • you are not meant to be on youtube littleone

  • who

  • worldwar2fan, of course.

  • Al Gore would be proud of this! I know water's almost impossible to do at that scale, but the mega drops on the hat were kind of funny. What technology did you use for the lip synch?

All in all, I loved it

  • he made them in axogon composer

  • good film. very good

  • Did you make this??

  • Yes.

  • La seule chose qui est dommage est que comme d'habitude je ne comprends rien à l'histoire.

Sinon pour l'ambiance, la lumière, les sets, les voix, les bruitages, la musique, l'animation, les effets spéciaux, ce film est vraiment beau.

  • Uhh I think so...

  • One of the best brickfilms ever!

  • LOVE IT!

  • 10/5 stars! Great story! Great Animation! Great special effects! Great everything! One of the 5 best Brickfilms to date! It makes my Brickfilms look like junk. What's funny about your film is the detective sounds a lot like Zap Brannigan.

  • best lego movie I have saw...

  • This is some of the greatest animation I have ever seen! Good Job VNAnimation I cant wait to see more from you guys

  • To clear up any confusion, VN had nothing to do with the making of this film. ;)

  • Haha, I wish I did...

  • Everybody wants to...

  • AWESOME BEST BRICKFILM EVA!!!!

The beginning (about the earth) and the end (with the plant) kinda reminded me of Wall-E.

  • Dude! Best movie yet!!! Five stars!!!!

  • WOW! Must of tooken a long time to do this one. Great animating and i would have to say, one of the greatest brickfilms yet :D

  • He told me that he took him 2 months to film and another 2 months to edit.

  • Nope, I filmed and edited the movie in about 45 days' time.

  • Oh, even better!

  • Should Have Been A 1:00 Longer But All In All Great Great Animation

  • And why do you say that?

  • This is totally briljant! I saw it before when you posted it on BiM for the FAR competition.

    -T.G-Tom

  • Bloody hell! I'm in awe, truly wonderful.

  • i mean like me

  • that guy looks loke me!

  • SmeagolStudios creating unbelieveable brickfilms? Now that's nothing new. Honestly. This guy is definately top3. brickfilmer in the world.
