It's a tough one with this video, although what he says is true, his criticism is not really valid. We Costa Ricans use the "Pura Vida" much as he says, but even using it as an excuse for "fucking up" or making you wait or even not showing up is totally valid. For us, time doesn't equal money, as it does for Americans and Europeans, so he can sit down waiting for an apology or a justification. We have a rural notion of time, so we rather have a coffee or talk to a friend than join the rat race.

There is a little misunderstood about the actual meaning of the phrase, because it is only a greeting, but if there's also sarcasm, it means the opposite. It's a tough one with this video, although what he says is true, his criticism is not really valid. We Costa Ricans use the "Pura Vida" much as he says, but even using it as an excuse for "fucking up" or making you wait or even not showing up is totally valid. For us, time doesn't equal money, as it does for Americans and Europeans, so he can sit down waiting for an apology or a justification. We have a rural notion of time, so we rather have a coffee or talk to a friend than join the rat race.

I can keep giving you many more examples about the meaning of the phrase pura vida but again it has many other ways how to use it and when to use it... It is not translate as pure life...
