  • LOL@7:56 did that guy just throw the plastic bottle in the firebox? LOL hehe talk about a self-sufficient engine! Use anything that can burn in fire, and you're good to go! :D

  • I had no idea how much work was involved with operating these locomotives!

  • Very impressive camera work mate. I love the old 38's with their sharp crisp powerful beat. Thank you very much for sharing it with us.You must be using a HD video camera as the picture is very clear.

  • what a noise!!

  • Looking at around the 8min mark, the idea of firing light/often doesn't seem to apply to the 38's. Looks like the idea is fill it to the door and hope the draught it enough to pull it forwards. Is there anyone out there who can confirm this?? Seems to work as the safetys are lifting, but goes against what I've been taught. Awsome video though.....

  • @alwhite666 As far as i know the technique is called 'banking' you pile the coal at the back of the firebox, as the 38's have slopping firegrates and as the loco moves around the coal then shuffels forward to cover the entire grate, it helps prevent the need to 'throw' the coal all the way to the front of the firebox and on a long climb like the Illawarra it makes the firemans life alot easier!

    willing to be corrected

  • @alwhite666 It was quite common in NSW, when the quality of coal was good. On passenger runs, it was often the case to fill the firebox to the door, and that would last until the next station. Very common on the short north.

  • That's as railroads should look and sound!

  • Is that Ian Thornton

  • @samscandal
