A very impressive Video.Da times you get an idea what really hard work but the heater actually has.
Also, the engineer makes his job should not hervorragend.Man be jealous of him because he had before he was allowed to do this work also execute on the other side of his dues.
A champion is not just from the sky.
Very nice clear video Rejoice. Myself to others where you can not reach otherwise
LOL@7:56 did that guy just throw the plastic bottle in the firebox? LOL hehe talk about a self-sufficient engine! Use anything that can burn in fire, and you're good to go! :D
Very impressive camera work mate. I love the old 38's with their sharp crisp powerful beat. Thank you very much for sharing it with us.You must be using a HD video camera as the picture is very clear.
Looking at around the 8min mark, the idea of firing light/often doesn't seem to apply to the 38's. Looks like the idea is fill it to the door and hope the draught it enough to pull it forwards. Is there anyone out there who can confirm this?? Seems to work as the safetys are lifting, but goes against what I've been taught. Awsome video though.....
@alwhite666 As far as i know the technique is called 'banking' you pile the coal at the back of the firebox, as the 38's have slopping firegrates and as the loco moves around the coal then shuffels forward to cover the entire grate, it helps prevent the need to 'throw' the coal all the way to the front of the firebox and on a long climb like the Illawarra it makes the firemans life alot easier!
@alwhite666 It was quite common in NSW, when the quality of coal was good. On passenger runs, it was often the case to fill the firebox to the door, and that would last until the next station. Very common on the short north.
Did ya notice the engineer had his hand on the throtle, and pushing befor the wheels even sliped, That man knows his engin.

If 2 38's are to be operational before 2012, they oughta bring 3616 out and give her a full restoration!
