I always cut my squares for half-square triangles 7/8 " larger than the finished square (2 HST's). This is a great method for making bias squares though. You never have to deal with those troublesome bias edges! The block lies flat every time.
You must be a more accurate cutter than I am, I guess, if you can get away with only adding 1/2" to the size of the squares for bias squares/2 HST's.
