@cchanderson It was not exclusive to the Midwest. Some of the southwest and the south were hit too. The dust bowl went from southern south Dakota straight down to Northern & Central Texas. Some of eastern: Colorado, new mexico, Wyoming, and Montana were hit too, but nowhere as bad as Northern Texas and Kansas. Kansas and Northern Texas were HIT the hardest as the Dust and drought settled mostly over that region.
@cellmate1 Listen dumbshit this music teaches you about it, if you were smart enough u'd listen to the fucking lyrics. So have a nice day and go fuck yourself :)
Read Timothy Egan's book "The Worst Hard Time". It made me cry so many times, but it's amazing to see what our ancestors had to go through. Gotta remind myself of how much worse it could be when I'm having a tough day :)
Yes, it was "man-made" because, unfortunately, the farmers did not know about rotating crops. And although the dust bowl itself is not happening again - are we not in another major economic crisis? Nobody in power wants to call it a "depression" but with the high unemployment, foreclosures: what's the difference?
It was a tragedy that didn't have to happen. greed and disregard for the land made a bad drought into a hell on earth. I wish more people would remember stuff like this. Great vid
@BTgirl1296 Although this isn't the picture of the dust bowl, it is closely related. This woman is a homeless(migrant) mother, driven out of her home by the devastation and hunger brought on by the disaster. I believe it was taken by one of the photographers working for FSA. Please try to get your facts right before trying to correct someone.
Its funny how the Indians (real Americans) and Buffalo co-existed with this topography for millennia, but as soon as Spaniards/White men came into the picture, they destroyed it all in a matter of 3 decades. What a sad but true fairy tale! But it should come as no surprise since they have been destroying the world since the 1400s
this song is pete, the singer from the devil makes three, and one of my favorite of all time. check them out on youtube and check out their youtube, which links you to pete's myspace page to hear a couple more songs from him.
Are you sure that all these photos are vintage Dust Bowl era pictures? The photo at :39 is from the paperback book cover of Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out Of Carolina which wasn't even set in the Dust Bowl time.
An awesome song to compliment the vivid photos of despair. Masterful job of blending the two .. esp. picking out the montage of photos and matching them to the lyrics. Never hear of the song or the artist before but he has great lyrics, melody and it just knocked me out. I almost knew the dust bowl but not quite. I hope never again.
My Grandma and Grandpa grew up in Kansas right in the dust bowl. I dont know how the survived it. It was miserable.
