I don't think he used the eraser tool, I believe it was the pen tool or the lasso tool. That is the standard way of doing it. The eraser isn't that refined.

Gotta unlock the background before you erase it then the bg will be transparent...just dub click the bg to unlock it

I know there is a way to have the camera automatically figure out the appropriate depth of field (fake blurring), rather than doing it manually... i forget

Yeh you can let the 3d camera do the depth of field blurring for you but when it does it looks like a regular gaussian blur... It doesn't emulate a real lens blur with the blooming and circles of confusion like the "lens blur" plug-in tries to do. The best plug for lens blur for AE is by Frishluft and its called "lenscare" Real nice bokeh with that one :)

You shouldn't need to choke your alpha. When importing your footage, just interpret your image with a premultiplied alpha that is white (or right click on the file in the bin, and goto interpret...blah blah blah).
