When I first saw "Inglourious Basterds" in Summer 2009, I confess that I was repulsed by it: I couldn't tell if QT was making a movie that endorsed torture and all other things. This interview he did with Maddow really opened my eyes. While QT is correct to point out that the movie is not an outright politicaly allegory, the connections he makes to Guantanamo have relevance. And I love how he insists that the film doesn't simply paint all Germans as monstrous freaks: "I don't play it that easy."
These 2 guys represent everything I appreciate about USA: diversity, engaging conversation, wit, humour, entertaining arts with some deeper quality, progressive ideas, an original and versatile look at history and politics etc
And just imagine that in the same country Rush Limbaugh or Bill O´Reilly are talking to Sarah Palin
I give u my thumbs up for the courage of going against the flow :-)
On the issue I too think that lots of graphic violence by Tarantino misses the point & spoils the quality of a movie where very often a hint of sth is much more powerfull than giving the viewer everything on the plate
here Tarantino could learn a lot of Coen brothers who exploit violence but in much more intelligent & refined manner which make it a better movie
@KalleSacanaBlomkvist You're missing the point. Not every director should follow the guidelines you've set forth that make one "good" at what they do. And not every film need be elegant in all aspects of its execution. Sometimes films are just fun---so the director blows things up and violence abounds. Well, with Basterds he married aspects of two very different sides of filmmaking. I highly suggest learning to appreciate movies that are...fun. Then you'll get why this is so good. Context...
@lildstryr In fact, by Tarantino I enjoy fun, entertaining dialogs, references to other movies, good hand with actors, playing with the story line, challenging the viewers´ expectations of good taste.
Yet, he DOES exaggerate the use of graphic violence in all of his movies. the Basterds suffer in addition from too long, lame and boring dialogs. Not even Tarantino is free from weaker moments ...
@KalleSacanaBlomkvist Sorry, but neither the violence nor the dialog in Inglourious Basterds are "weak moments". There isn't even as much violence in it as you'd exepct from a movie about a group of soldiers who are out to scalp their enemies. The violence that IS in the movie is there as characterization. The dialog, too, is there for suspense, and to give the characters depth (a German talks like a German would, etc. )
If any of those are excessive to you, you didn't understand the movie.
She was equating what the Basterds did to suicide bombers? Theres a huge difference between trying to blow up Hitler/ Third Reich, and trying to blow up innocent people. Huge difference. Stupid Stupid Maddow.
She was pointing to the simularites, not equating it. It is a film where the heroes are operaiting outside the rule of war, plain clothes, torturing, straping on bombs and so on.
And what are the huges differense between what they do, and those who fight the western armies in Iraq and Afghanistan
Well for one theres a difference between Nazis and just random civilians. I mean if you haven't heard of the holocaust I could understand if while watching the film you were saying "poor nazis." The tactics may be the same but the victims are not. Innocent civilians on one hand, on the other, Nazis.
You know "Nazi" just meas someone who supported the nazi party, It's like saying if they blew up a building in the middle east to kill american military brass, the pages and secretaries are all fair game, they were republican. So to those who oppose America's presence, it's justifiable collateral murder.
I'm debating the concept, not the movie, If your commentary is just about the movie, then just disregard the entire argument I've made.
In that case I apologize, I was speaking in broader terms. People can always apply things to a movie that the director never intended, I believe your right on that point about him not intending this to be the undertone of the film.
They weren't all nazis, not nazi soldiers anyway, and besides, even though WE know that they are restricting the guest list to only "those who will be moved by what is on the screen" The Basterds DO NOT. They are all willing to die and kill innocent civilians who have done nothing wrong in order to kill the Fuhrer and co. That's what makes them badass.
hahahahahahaha. German civilians? They were all high ranked member of the third reich. If they were civilians, of course the basterds would be suicide bombers. Really though, nice try.
You don't actually believe you can blow up a public building and not kill innocents, do you? Even if it's a military building. Just the theater example, the projector operator, the ushers, anyone who's just staff.
And if you blow yourself up with anyone else, that is by definition a suicide bombing.
The ushers were all nazis in this case, the projectionist was already dead. Obviously this would not always be the case, and the basterds wouldn't have known this, I just think its something Tarantino was careful to include to ensure that people wouldn't be making the connections that you people are making. Hes stated several times, it was to make jews cheer at the ending it could have been. As immature as this sounds, its what hes stated. Not liberal, not conservative...its a movie.
He said it was all unintentional, and actually tried to shy away from it. As I said in a previous post, theres a difference between trying to blow up the third reich, and trying to blow up innocent people. As for thinking its right wing, I doubt that as well. QT makes films, not commentaries.

I like the way Brad Pitt's character just says "Hey, Donny, we've got a German out here, wants to die for country. Oblige him."
For once, a war movie shows how stupid and anticlimactic nationalism is.

I didn't even watch this yet, but 3 reasons why i know this clip is gonna be great.
1. Rachel Maddow is a great liberal and is one of the best commentators of the left. She can break down the right wing like crazy.
2. Quentin Tarantino, a legend and the man at making movies.
3. Wu-tang Clan, the greatest group ever, is represented in this clip.

rbkelivet 2 years ago
Of course the tactics are the same, I'm only saying two things:
1) The difference between blowing up civilians and nazis.
2) The fact that Tarantino wasn't intentionally making this comparison.

how do they don't know?
i don't remember anything in the movie that states something like that, i believe we have every reason to asume they do know
