@pivotman64 no you CAN'T divide by 0. It's something that simply doesn't have an answer. It's not that it's not done because it causes a paradox it's simply that you can't logically do it.
@iObsidian Why are you bringing in language? Calm down man. It's the internet.
You CANNOT divide by 0!!!!!! It does equal infinity but infinity doesn't exist!!! When you think about it long enough, you realise infinity can equal ANYTHING as long as you don't count on one more. It can equal 0.00001 as long as I don't think about the number 0.00002! That is why you can't do it! Because it can equal anything you want it to!
If you think infinity is a true number then that means 1 = 2!!!
omg are we back to the year 1 of the world? most people knew that 0.99999 was the real numbers not 1,2 but now people have heard of 2 new words! round-up
the theory that the mistake is caused by dividing by 0 is wrong. i guess thats what he wanted you to find because it looks like a high school class. but the theory behind dividing by 0 is proven in calculus and it can be done as long as proper restrictions are given. to truly understand this you must know matrices and calculus and then you can see where he went wrong.
Did nobody watch the video up to 2:30 or something? The guy ACKNOWLEDGES that there is a mistake. Quit hating on the professor, he knows what he's doing! The only one that doesn't is all you trolls.
He said "there's a mistake up here that you're supposed to find" so why does everyone keep saying you're wrong, you're wrong, you're wrong. No he isn't. He said there is a mistake. You would have thought that someone who spots that if a=b then a-b=0 and knows you cannot divide zero by zero would understand that.
@PriestRSC the whole thing was an extra credit question for the class to see who was paying attention for that week's lesson(s). He even states it at the end that there is a fallacy that needs to be pointed out.
@NssOssPtm yeah yeah, I know; h'hopitals rule? Have you read any of the theory analysis that was done on that stuff? Or perhaps have you read (stuff BEFORE L'Hopital's rule was even applied) some of Euclean's works? He proved that by taking limits like that in order to solve for the mystical answer: 0/0 can equal any number of things; defined by the limits you put on it, it destroys the entire basis of what we call math. Take HIGHER calculus before you talk to me.
@NssOssPtm the first one was also meant to be 'L'Hopital's rule'. If you have an email I'll send you one of my cousins disproof of the theory. I understand L'Hopital's rule is a HUGE part of calculus, but there are quite a few problems with it.
@PriestRSC LOL, you can disprove l'hopitals rule? please send me the link or w/e. i would love to see it. and no l'hopitals rule is not a huge part of calculus, it is just a part that makes solving some problems easier. dividing by 0 does not mean l'hopitals rule, its just one of the many indeterminate forms that can be solved by applying said rule. which does not matter for this question. the only thing wrong with dividing 0 is losing information.
@NssOssPtm yeah I actually can; there's a really good forum on it by Dr. Math actually if you want a more concrete way. But I prove it using certain limits; I'll make a vid tonight and send it to you
@norien123 lets say, i have 4 apples.. and il give them to 2 people.. each one will take 2...
5 apples to 10 people..same.. 2 for each one... but when i have 4 apples and i want to give it to no one...how much can i give.... simply infinite number.. but when i have 0 apples and i want to give them to no one... how many apples will i give?... you said 1... o.0...do an experiment and try to give something you don't have to someone doesn't exist
It's hard to believe I was going to choose math teaching as a career at one point in my life... being a system administrator though does make me wonder if the fallacies in this problem are what makes all my servers get the blue screen of death :)
@BACUS666 Instead you could substitute a with b, since they are equal. Then you have 2b = b. Divide both sided by b and voila 2 = 1. Now does it make sense?
If you want the "mistake" the fact that he divided by 0 means nothing unless you add in the fact that in the DPE part of the requirements are that you can't divide by 0
My friend, if a+b=b, then a should be nothing but zero. So you can not give a, any positive or negative number other than zero. And the second one is: As you have already stated that a=b, their substraction is zero. Therefore, you can not divide any positive number by zero, unless you want to get an undefined result. Thanks for your video; it really makes students think.

Maybe you can't. I sure can, I can get three answers by dividing with 0. The answers are 1, 0, and undefined. Figure out what I'm doing. ;). Have fun. Lol. It should be pretty obvious.
Stop on the section SPE. If a=b, than according to MPE, a^2=ab, and again, since a=b, than ab=aa=a^2. In this case we would have a^2-a^2=a^2-a^2. anything subtracted from itself is zero, so all we get is 0=0.
Same thing in the factor section. Again, if a=b, than we have (a+a)(a-a) = a(a-a). Again, anything subtracted from itself is zero, so a-a=0. We have 0(a+a)=0a, and since anything multiplied by 0 is 0, we have 0=0.
Finally someone who got it lol! Yest everyone read pivotpcproductions' post here the whole thing was an extra credit question for the class to see who was paying attention for that week's lesson(s). If a=b then a-b=0. You should not proceed after the step 3 where it says (a+b)(a-b) = b (a-b) as this equation itself is invalid. You cannot divide zero by zero ! Its like saying 25 * 0 = 65 * 0 which is true but it does not mean that you can divide both sides by zero and cancel them off to prove that 25 = 65.
@pivotman64 no you CAN'T divide by 0. It's something that simply doesn't have an answer. It's not that it's not done because it causes a paradox it's simply that you can't logically do it.

@YZB25 Let me tell you why that's bullshit.
You CAN divide by zero. In fact, it's simply "infinity".
0 can go into any number an infinite amount of times.
Dividing by zero is equal to multiplying by infinity.
