  • Bring ON the Night..!!!!!

  • If we believe in the night we trust.

  • cool

  • I love this song so fucking much !

  • This beats that unbrained (eh; unplugged) version by Natalie Merchant hands down.

  • epic!

  • amazing song!! i like it with 10000 maniacs, but this is better, the same thing with more than this song.

  • For everyone "pointing out" that this was written by Bruce, just drop it. The authorship is officially registered at ASCAP as "Bruce Springsteen & Patti Smith."

The last thing Bruce needs is credit for *another* great song - he has 300. Along with Dylan, he is America's greatest songwriter.

As far as I'm concerned, "Because the Night," was an equal collaboration. *Please* allow Patti, whom Bruce respects enormously & whom he has repeatedly thanked for her contribution to it, have her due.

  • I thought 10,000 maniacs did this song

  • @PrincessCrystalDream Patti Smith included Because the Night on an album in 1978, when Nataie Merchant was 14 years old. It only went to number 5 as a single, but has since become a classic.

It has been covered by over 20 artists and bands, and yes, including 10,000 Maniacs, who, as you know, do a slower, softer version.

To hear a version with even more of an edge, and simply harder rock, find one of Bruce Sprngsteen's live performances (he co-wrote it), also from 1978.

  • I want to sing this really loud whenever I hear it......

  • I am so thankful too the person who made me understand this song deep inside. But he doesnt understand music at all; I can not send it too him and expect him too understand how I feel about him.

    frustrating :( ...

  • 14 dislikes????

Must be U S Congressman, or similar Idiots

  • Patti.....

    The Queen...

  • Woooow intensitive, to take the car and run to the lover's arms.

  • Alright!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This song is legend.

  • 12 people are very strange...

  • @folkApache 15 now..

  • @folkApache

I must agree...Patti Smith is "The Queen" (what emotion)

  • Great song!!!!!

  • Bruce Springsteen wrote a great song and Patti Smith made a great version.

  • @bluesboy25000

    they did it together...

  • Yet another of my favourite songs.

  • 70's 80' and 90's hits always the best, unique, with unique style, as if told about something, about something cheerful, memorable, profound and sublime

  • you just seat down

    shout your mouth

    close your eyes...

    and make your dream..

  • @sweetbrowneyedlady Well, Patti is still alive, so i hope she's rocking on Earth for some time longer!

  • DAMN, i was so glad back in 78 to hear patti smith on the radio! also, she looked, like, really good on that album cover.

  • DAMN, i was so glad back in 78 to hear patti smith on the radio!

  • "...clean up the Nile, you Boston lovers" sounds better.

  • quienes son los estúpidos que han puntuado negativo? 11 subnormales ;)

  • Springsteen wrote , he had the music and chorus written he gave that to Patti and she wrote the words, if I am not mistaken .

  • @dittomama So, Springsteen wrote this song and gave it to her to sing it?

  • @jojojob75 He kind of came to a standstill and couldn't figure out what else to do with it. The music was there, but the lyrics needed some reworking. They were both using Jimmy Iovine as a producer and were recording around the same time. Jimmy showed it to Patti and she turned it into what it is today.

  • @jojojob75 yes

  • PUNK

  • This is Karen Carpenter's evil twin separated at birth.

  • Patti and the band hit #13 in Billboard, 6-24-78. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Cowritten by Patti, and the Boss.

  • pure magic .

  • so good!

  • sick.

  • Forgot how good this song is all the best patti

  • Great voice and instrumentals combined to make a song that will continue to be enjoyed. Song kicks ass!

  • i'm reading her autobiography "Just Kids" and its awesome. She has helped me reawaken my inner artist

  • amazing song why don't they make music like this anymore!

  • Comment removed

  • Heard this song at a karaoke bar. Wow! This is a hell of a song!

  • good sound production ,nothing miraculus or mythical about it.

yeah, that guy could of had a touch of rsd ,could be a cell phone or something like it?,well there you go.!

  • it looks like the dude on the left is on a cell phone....:)

  • I met her yesterday and she is so nice! Love her

  • Mythikal song and mythical singer. Unforgettable.

  • This is Music.

  • What a great performer and band

  • Now there is masterpiece

  • on this day, in 1978, this song was first released.

  • You know, I seem to like Patti Smith's version much better than the 10,000 Maniacs version!

  • FEEL where she takes us !!! Because the night belongs to us all.... when we hear her sing her message.

  • A real and total artist, a great woman with amazing talent.

  • Better than Lady Gaga.

  • @Yyyyzyyy

    What isn't?

  • @Yyyyzyyy In what way? Because Patti Smith wasn't a commercial "success" and Lady Gaga is? Because Smith wasn't necessarily mainstream, but Gaga is? Based on voice, I'd say Gaga actually has a stronger one; that is if pitch is what you're aiming for. Based on lyrical content? Well, yes, I'd say Smith excels there. Still... comparing Gaga and Smith is like comparing apples and oranges. Sure, they're both musical artists, but they're after totally different things in the end.

  • @chadicious I like turtles.

  • @Yyyyzyyy Why do you like turtles? Is it because they're better than every other animal? Who are you to say that they're better than, say, a hamster or a an aardvark? Why would privilege turtles over more mainstream animals like dogs or cats? Is it because you feel the urge to be slightly different from the status quo? How typical of a Patti Smith fan...

  • @Yyyyzyyy did gaga record this song also?

  • 33 years ago today Springsteen gave this song to Patti Smith.

  • patti smith can sing

  • i feel this shit man xxx

  • It sounds like a Springsteen song, honestly, albeit with some Patti Smith touches in performance. If you really listen to the album, this song sticks out... not in a bad way.

  • @Sauron338

    SMH...it IS A Springsteen song.

  • @bdaleypsu Only the song and the chorus, but the verses are all Patti

  • @Sauron338 It actually *is* a Springsteen song. But it's okay, I thought the same thing but in reverse when I heard Bruce do it. XD

  • I agree this song IS PERFECT

  • I always sing this song when it plays in the radio, but like always I never knew from what band it came from XD thanks again you tube.

  • This song is filled with such incredible yearning

  • no es de mis tiempos..... pero siempre la escuché en mi casa!!! TEMAZO!

  • Bruuuuuce.....

  • That's right -- Springsteen wrote the song. If you listen to the song carefully, it has all of the Springsteen hallmarks.

  • She didn't write it, once Bruce wrote it he gave it to her and she added a couple touches. That's why they share writing credit.

  • she wrote it....

  • @LynnaRenae no i think bruce springsteen did.

  • As far as I am concerned, this is Patti Smith's song. Not da Boss's.

  • @nikitabijoux she wrote the verses, but the chorus was and the music was Bruce. I was shocked myself when I heard that Bruce made this song, but Patti's voice made the hit that its known

  • This song brings back so many great memories.

  • And still there 3 who doesn't like this? C'MON, this is awesome :O

  • Brilliant love song. Have it on vinyl somewhere.

Takes me back to my first love. Descrlbes the feelings exactly.

    Thanks for posting.

  • truly a timeless, ageless masterpiece !

  • This song is from 1978.

  • Nice Song

  • I remember being a 19 year old runaway and I ended up with a bunch of really decent kids all hanging out with one decent kid who had a record player and two records and this was one of them.Thats the first time I heard it.And even tho I had nothing,I had Patti and her voice.

  • For all those who dont know, this was written by BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN.

  • @ThePaulanthony62 It was CO-written by Bruce Springsteen

  • By The Boss alone, he wrote too many songs (over 70 I believe) for an album including this and he GAVE it to Patti because she was recording at the same time in the same studio,

  • @ThePaulanthony62 actually, according to the record label, Springsteen and Patti Smith share writing credit.

  • not,alone,zo,wel

  • @the360cast If you love something that much, I think if anything, you SHOULDN'T cover it, especially when you're not that great of a singer to begin with. Not bashing, but I LOVE this song, and I know that my singing is awful. If I sang this in a karaoke bar, I would feel so dishonorable for killing something so wonderful! Plus, I'm sure Cascada knew she wasn't up to par, but decided to release the song anyway. Doesn't that make this fair game?

  • Love this song! :D

  • I like :)

    so beautiful song

  • BRUUUUUCE!!! ftw

  • she´s so great, and free, independent,....MrDacioss/@adaciao

  • A female Bob Dylan...

  • MUSICAAAA!!

    SUPERB!

  • now that is a real woman with talent

  • @opheliajade1986 Absolutely!

  • @opheliajade1986 she didnt even right the song

  • @biggmouth811 she co wrote it with springsteen

  • @opheliajade1986 this is her only hit and she didn't write it, her talent is limited.

  • My teenage years to a T!

  • Great job, Bruce! But this one is the only one great version of this song.

  • Comment removed

  • Patti Smith...a passionate revolutionary without pretense or artifice, only soul

  • I like Rock And Roll :)

  • I've always wondered who sang this hauntingly beautiful song when it came on the radio. Now I know. Truely, what was she and The Boss smoking when they colaborated on this song!!!!!!!! Dang, I'm a lyricist and I want what ever they had that particular evening LOL or should I say hint, hint. Bruce and Patti, u both rock!!! Patti, u made me a fan :) :) :)

  • I love this woman, the rocker, the artist, the poet... a major inspiration.

  • I'm watching Patti smith on the Colbert report right now

  • Empowering, amazing song

  • amazing that songs of this standard rarely reached the top 5 when originally released, if they were released today they would be a god send, just another sign of the drop in popular music:(

  • Love that song.

  • I love it ;D

  • one of the songs my mom raised me on, sigh i love being a 90s kid raised on 80s and 70s

  • Magen, love is a banquet, and when the food runs short men say stupid things. I love you. I'm purposefully rewriting this till I get it right enough that I can be done with it through one iteration of the song.

When I last slept peacefully at night, it was because the night belonged to us. I hope it always does.

  • great singer, saw her at Roskilde 2010 :) wonderful experience. such passion and rebel attitude

  • great singer, saw her at Roskilde 2010 :) wonderful experience. such passion and rebel attitude

  • How come it is the same with all the "great" disco song I like? Sooner or later they turn out to be nothing but cheap covers. Thanks for the upload!

  • I'll never forgive my uncle for playing this when I was 12 years old...all those women who helped me thhrough the hard times that followed.....

  • visionquest watched the HBO special lol "The Promise" making of Darkness on the Edge of Town good docu on the Boss`s career after the Born to Run album, yep I saw it too

  • This song is the SHIT !!! Patti rocks like no other. Belt it out baby!

  • I still get chills when I hear this , one of the best songs ever made. Fab. x

  • Thank You Brucw for writting Such a Great Song.

Patti Smith can really belt this song out.

  • so beautiful song.....

  • Patti is one my favorite and heroic female battlers. Marriane Faithful, awesome. I could drop names for a lifetime. Female rockers and writers are along list, but I know it wouldn't satisfy your antimale feeding frenzy. Good luck with your issues.

  • Jeez, talk about sexist! Did you little weazels actually read what I said or is it just a common, knee jerk reaction from uptight PC cops?

  • <3 ^_^

  • A powerful song, with a powerful singer. We are attempting to give this to an audience, with another amazingly powerful singer.

  • When someone named 666gothicdeath666 says this song is perfect, you know it's gotta be good.

  • @ nuggleslikeness Okay, have you ever heard You Take My Breath Away, by Queen? Another man. Yes he was gay, but he was married when he wrote the song. Go figure. The point is, is that men are very passionate and much more poetic about it than females. Or, maybe they're just more published over the many centuries. Certainly less shy, I suppose there are many poetic gems hidden away by men written by their lovers. I know I have a few, and I will burn them before my demise.

  • @kevin652010 Jesus, sexist much? Got news for you, they BOTH wrote it and yeah, I think a woman can write an intense song and do it better than a man...look at Stevie Nicks, who's a fantastic songwriter with INTENSE lyrics....the reason more men are more published is because it's a MANS world

  • @kevin652010 Let me guess, you're the ignorant and chauvinsit type that would prefer to have women working in the kitchen right. If your mother is alive I think she'd be ashamed of you as I know my late mother would be if I ever said anything as ignorant or sexist as you did about questioning a woman's ability to write songs. You're the one the needs to grow up and smell the 21st Century pal!

  • @kevin652010 So you know, I'm a poet, and I'm female. And I'm offended by your words, sir. Just so you know.
