  • @MudFlapper359:

Your grandpa's truck should be a lot easier to drive than this beast, once you get used to those 1st - 2nd U-shifts on many of those loadstars

  • I'm starting to get how to learn to use these transmissions by watching all of these videos and it kind of seems hard to use them.

  • My grandpa has a 1974 IH 1600 that has an engine that sounds exactly like this one here, only it has one shifter on the transmission.

  • I like old gassers as much as anyone. But that's a lot of low-HP gear rowing. Imagine it's 1972 and you're driving this thing loaded through a hilly city on a 95 degree day with no AC. Must have been rough.

  • that definitely keeps a driver busy.....

  • Awesome footwork.

  • I drove a dump truck that had the same trany.. Nobody showed me how to use it.. And I drove it for a year.. Its not as hard as it seems. Its realy not.. Pain in the ass.. but not to tuff at all.

  • 7 people know they'll never be able to drive a truck like this!

  • Other than knowing how to drive it already, how does one figure out how to drive one of these? I mean, how do you know what stick to shift when?

  • why is he double clutching!!!!! he seems to be a seasoned driver .....please save the clutch brake!!!!!!! i'm tired of replacing them......float......

  • So what is the point of other videos, they are shifting with both hands. I always wondered why they did that. After watching this one, I could do that. Just dont expect me to find reverse though. lol

  • How could a 549 gas out work a 855 diesel? The diesel has way more power and torque. An 8v71 2 stroke Detroit would run right over a 549 gas v8.

  • Make a cat 3208 into a 636 CID gas engine, any thought on this? Check out the Silver Bullet pulling team, They built a cat 3208 to run methanol. Hehe, 3000 hp!

  • A true truck driver! amazing how easy he made that look, I could not imagine what that must of been like to try and take one of them through a town of to pull hills in one

  • Obviously, gas engines aren't economical for anyone hauling this kind of weight anymore, but, having been there, done that, this guy does a hell of a job!

  • i've been at it since 1991, and have never touched one of the's transmissions. i would almost pay some one to teach me how ! great video and good job to the driver ! thanks so much for sharing the video !

  • 4-speed auxilliary trans is a 'deep under' so shifting is not 'full progressive'. Each gear of the main box can be split 3-ways. Because the last (4th) gear in the auxilliary is towards the dashboard, that means it is an overdrive auxilliary.

    This guy is pretty good!

  • yah i can see that he is an amazing driver and all..but why would anyone make a transmission like that?? :$

  • He doesn't know how to drive a big truck or he'd never touch that clutch.

  • @rpm371 Clutchless shifting doesn't work with two boxes.

  • clouble dutchin!!!

  • i would pray for green lights

  • finally someone who uses the clutch the right way everybody else is fired he is the only one who will drive my trucks

  • @john5347h ill agree with that!

  • @john5347h

Yeah, double-clutching and all! *I* could drive yours...:)

  • got some fancy footwork my friend, you should take up dancing

  • Hm, I don't even know what all that was. Looks like he was moving a rubix cube down the road, or something.

  • Around 1982 I drove my dad's International dump trunk with this transmission. He told me that if you could drive this, you could drive anything on the road. I drove this for two years and hated it, but he was right. Everything after that was a piece of cake. Thanks for the video...

  • Stupid question, but seems like there are a lot of people here with experience. On a light truck say a Ram 3500 with a NV5600 six speed and a 5.9L Cummins. Would it be possible to mate up the Brownie with double overdrives and just leave it in high gear 90% of the time and just pop it into the low or 1:1 gear only when pulling something heavy? With the Six speed Xmission the gears are closer together than they need to be, and the overdrive isn't steep enough when empty going cross country.

  • and i thought driving a single stick non syncro trans was hard...

  • Comment removed

  • Nice. I drive a 1963 F1840 loadstar 5x3. with 345 v8.

  • @acco1840 i didn't know they made a F1840 loadstar

  • they should put this video on trucking schools so people can see what an expert looks like... oh and experience.. not just movin a simple ten speed..

  • LOVE the Triple clutchin'n

  • I want to buy a old pete with a 5x4 just for fun but don't know anyone that chould drive need help with the exact shift pattern on how to drive it I wish someone chould do a good tuterial on how to drive one of these beasts

  • ear plugs. lmao. nice shifting.

  • I had a 1966 Autocar with a 250 Cum'es with a quad tran, loved that ole truck.

  • i would be so confused

  • hehehe these were fun!! I'd love to see a kid drive one of these now days! ;-)

  • nice,i drove a twin stick brokway years ago...no power stearing...no heat...i had to peddle 30 stops a day..around berlington vt when it was -20;f....ha ha dont miss thouse days...i had a portable gas heater on the passengers side for heat....

  • Regarding a couple of comments.. The two speed rear axle was a VERY old THIRTIES invention after the 5x2 for trucks and the early larger buses that wanted ten speeds..the splitte rin the back [but it was not till the forties that buses tried somehting like that.] Second, that's gas, then? No wonder it has the two sticks. Many such engines were used in tandem as well [twin engine/twin sticks.] This is as late as 1973, I'm assuming from posts here.

  • 1972..

  • THAT is what was used originally if you needed three or more splitter gears and some cases two.. These were muscle reliant just as much as the main. One was the five speed regular-plus reverse, like in an automobile or bus, or any other truck, and the other is the spliiter, or brownie* stick, a four speed manual. The total, if interactive mutually, would be 20. There are four speeds in reverse.

*NOTE: Brownie originated from Brown lipe.

  • Can someone explain this to me?? I drive trucks 8 speed 10 speed but what the hell is this? Help!

  • Comment removed

  • @shmaltz , they didnt have air hi/lo range ya know the little button you flick over or up , so they used another stick it fucked me up to but , i found it on google , look up quadbox shift pattern

  • I'm still confused

  • *are no synchros

  • Does he have to rev match perfectly if there is no synchros?

  • Almost

  • why are their two levers

  • @DeWalt36volt the farthest forward lever is a 5spd ''main'' transmission, the second lever is a 4spd auxillary, aka secondary, transmission that gives you 4 ranges so you can keep you engine in the power band when pulling a heavy load or going up hills

  • can you keep one in first and the other one in fourth

  • i am not sure. i havnt personally driven a 5+4 configuration. i am very familiar with 4+2 and 5+2 transmission sets.

i dont see why you couldnt. it would probably be about the same as my ford model aa doodlebug tractor. i am in the process of converting it over to twin transmissions for more ranges so i can get more use out of it. in a doodlebug when you put 2 transmissions you want to have 2 identical ones and as long as you know the ratios you can shift them together or independantly

  • Mam oh Man did this bring back memories .I would hate to guess how many miles I drove one like this it was a 2010 gas, 10 spd, Hendrickson susp, twin screw with a 20 ft grain bed. used the clutch to start and and that was it I can still hear the "Bark " of the mufflers and my back still feels the hendrickson LOL

  • Old School! They don't make trucks or truckers like that anymore! Thanks for sharing.

  • not wrong

  • wow, that is so crazy. so awesome

  • Sure Reminds me of my rookie days,hoo-raw !! Well done

  • Mate well done. What elese can you say?

  • sweet!! not that many gas burners still around that big

  • Nice Truck. And Super Sound.I lift my Hat at this Truckers who drive a Twin Stick Truck! They not only Drivers they are Artists. You must be Fast at Shifting and you must hear the rpm`s.Great Video!Five from me

  • sweet truck

  • clouble dutch it!!! hahaha

  • he's DAMN fast shifting 8O

  • That 'ol boy is right at home!!! Pretty cool.

  • oh yes very similar to what I learned on you have to be a racecar driver/trucker to run one my arms would be sore by the end of the day and if I kicked you with my left leg I would hurt ya the best was having the hydralic over electric double pump brakes to stop that was the best.

  • This is a 4 speed main and a 4 speed auxiliary transmisssion. Just look when the truck stops and the operator shift the reverse at 3:37.

  • Old Binders are cool!

  • We own a pair of these for silage and harvesting.

  • Stomp that clutch ahaha good video

  • man that looks hard as hell but badass nonetheless

  • 100,055 Views!! Sweet!

  • I bet that this old international has the BIG 549 V-8 AND THE 549 WAS A HELL OF A GAS ENGINE.

  • My first truck was a '71 International with a 4x4. I never got very good at double clutching with her. She shifted really good and easier without the clutch.

  • Nice clip showing the (not so straight forward) downshifts. Must be harder to float the gears with a gas engine because the revs fall much more quickly than with a diesel. Surely a gas engine has a sufficiently wide power band as to render the close ratio aux 'box redundant...?

  • I think the most interesting thing about this truck is its a gasoline powered.A Farmers truck no doubt about it.

  • is there an advantage to this

  • Not really, it's the same as a newer 1 Stick but a newer truck has the second Stick as a little plastic button on the main shifter knob and is shifted with air pressure. A 2 Stick you split the gears with a second Stick, a 1 Stick the platic button does that for you.

  • We have a 1966 Int. 1600 with an 8sp. 345 gas and its one fun truck to drive.

  • that takes some coordination.

  • ya know the funny thing is when you watch these 5 n 4 's bein' shifted they're watching the hands and feet and when they pan the camera upwards there's grampa sittin there ready to slap ya in the chicklets when you tell him he missed a gear lol !!!!!! i was shown how to do this in a 72 KW with a oshawa (GM) vibrator and a 110 barrel water tank and when i finally got the truck back to it's parking spot after loading I picked a different truck !! Hats off and bellies out to the old salts!

  • excelent job and a dying art..how often do you forget wich gear you in

  • boy id love to drive that beast!! Sounds like one of those old U-Haul trucks.

  • I'm just saying....The Road King.

  • this is almost comical. except for the very annoying leaking exhaust manifold gasket.

I guess it is mostly a tutorial to show just how many gears you can play with if you want with a 5/4.

  • THOU SHALT KNEEL TO THE TRUCKING KING

  • thats ridiculous. 2 sticks? there goes a real trucker

  • @IwanTchernenko, a 605 v8! thats huge, that would have been cool in that pickup, i want to put a 549 in a scout if i can fit it.

  • a 549 is way to big for a scout and it is not very practical , you have to reinforce everything on the scout to handle the torque of the 549 , at the end you are building another truck.

get a good 392 , enough for a scout and it fits

  • @IwanTchernenko, yea its not practical but it would be cool in the end. i figure somthing out.

  • yea, it would be hard to do though, i would imagine the fire wal and the fenders would have to be refabricated, its possibly, but would take some time and money, if i ever get around to it and have some money laying around, i will do it, very impractical, but it would be cool...Thanks

  • ye that is what i thought when i got the 605 , i put it in mijn 74 200 but it was way to big to fit in my truck hahaha

  • is the 605 a bigger block? thats a big engine.

  • it is an LV engine , it looks completely different than a 549.

i have an old workshop manual of international and they mention an 800 cubic inch gas engine but i never found info on that

  • thats cool, i would be plenty happy with a 549, but a 605 would be fun, and that 800 cubic inch engine would be crazy. if there are any left that is.

  • i have it here as a conversation piece now only , it won't fit because of the 4wd of my truck , the front axle is in the way.

but maybe one day i get my hands on a old caddy coupe with a broken engine ;-)

  • that would be cool.

  • i new this man was serious when i seen the ear plugs..

  • Your doing a nice job of dancing with that fine lady.

  • i take off my hat to that gentleman =)

  • REAL TRUCKS HAVE 2 STICKS!

  • I would love to have the opportunity to try that one day :)

  • That is one pimp ride.

  • the red diamond engines were 6 cylinders and the 549 was a v-8

  • 549 red diamond right ?

  • hats off to you buddy. i'm 21 and i'm willing to bet you've done forgot more than i'll ever know about truckin. Its amazing that he can shift 2 sticks, remember which shifter is where, keep moving and gaining speed, not hit double nothing, and not stall her. keep on jammin the gears, and thanks for posting

  • you do one thing enough it becomes second nature ;)

  • Been there done that and trying hard to forget it. Driving those old trucks was hard work you sure didn't have any trouble falling to sleep at night after 14 hours of that. Drivers today don't know how good they have it. we used to pull 35 foot pulp trailers with those old beasts I sure don't miss it !! I think I'll keep my 2006 with the 535 ISX but it's still fun to watch the way we used to do it. thanks for posting

  • GIVE THAT MAN A RAISE AND A COLD BEER!!

    -Strumem90

  • Jeezuz - the ol' 549 - that engine was the stud bolt back in the day - would out work a Cummins 855.

Of course, it got about 3 mpg though.

  • that people is a man who can drive a 5 and a 4 right there

  • that old guys a machine

  • Was a pleasure to watch...I Tips my Akubra to you sir...

  • This man drives this old truck like he was born at the wheel. My hat is off to you.

  • I love the sound of those old gas engines, reminds me of the school bus when I was a kid. I remember the International Loadstars on a Blue Bird body.

  • i've heard of them putting 345s I didn't know they put the 304 in trucks. the S series standard engine was the 345 until about 1985. you could upgrade to a 392 or diesels such as the 9.0 liter naturally aspirated or DT466. I thought it was used for pickups and scouts.

  • That's how I learned to drive a truck...2-stick and the dirt roads on Parker Ranch...gotta love this shit to do it all day everyday...me I love it & live it...WIDE!!!!!

  • I have a 1956 IH R-185 with a 501 RD. It's a beast of a in line six with pistons the size of coffee cans. Just happens to be a retired fire truck. Bedford Falls Fire Department

  • What amazes me is how the driver just drives this thing like it's an automatic!!! He REALLY knows what he is doing! My hat's off to you-I wish that I could do that!

    Mike

  • Amen to that, you sure don't see many people these days that can shift as good like this guy.

  • i love the sound of an old gas powered industrial engine my uncle had a 68 ford ton and a half flat bed with a 428 in it i loved the sound it made especially in granny gear it grunted backfired and sputered but it never failed

  • well i have seen a 304 in an old international grain truck once?

  • A 304??? The only place I ever saw a 304 was in a CJ5 jeep and an AMC Javelin. Kinda small engine for a grain truck, dontcha think???

  • there is a huge difference in auto and MD/HD engines. displacement. Same thing with GM. a auto 454 can't touch a 366 when i comes to moving weight. Ford put 460s in little trucks, 370s in big trucks.

  • Gottcha, I stand corrected and ty for the info. I hadn't considered that.

  • ah only an International can make that classic soothing glug...glug...glug.

    Love It! post more

  • Suckin Gas, Haulin Ass That's the good old fasion way :)

  • a 549 gas engine? never heard of them.

can somebody give me some info on these engines, they sound prety cool.

  • Ok ok ok molto bravo!!!

  • AAhh the sounds of yesteryears....

  • Those old "Cornbinders" are like the Energizer bunny, their tough

  • with a gasoline engine? wow must burn a lot of leaded gas...

  • maybee 2 mpg? 3?

  • oh less then that when loaded not even 1 mpg, 2-3 emty my uncle has one like this same trans same engine.

  • the diesel one gets 6.5 to 7

  • your lucky if you get that much.. peterbilt 379s get about a little over 5

  • True...but that's only because them 379's are MUCH bigger and heavier (with or w/o trailers) than the truck in this clip. I'd have to agree w/ DionsiosA76.

  • yea i know..but thats the trucks that get high mpg like kw t660 or a volvo

  • i love those old international trucks with those big v8s. my dad used to own one it was a 1965 international car hauler and it had a custom airhorn and airbrakes. it didnt have the double shifter but had a big monsterous v8under the hood and had no powersteering it sounds just like this one. unfortunately he sold it to a guy and we passed by a junkyard one day and saw it there with its cab smashed i was so pissed i missed that truck it was a great antique indeed.

  • I drive a '75 1800 LoadStar Gas with a Grain box. Its beat to shit, blows off the muffler damn near every day, leaks 4 dif. fluids but still Fires Up EVERY day! Also got a 76 1900S Loadstar-BEST DAMN TRUCK I EVER DROVE!!!!!

  • cool video...dont know what da fuck's goin on there but hey...

  • gas engines were cool. ran a ford tandem dump truck with a 534 and 5x4. 4 barrel howling and exhausts roaring with a big load, all you did was shift until you got to dump load. Then do it all over.

  • this is a 3 and 4 ? at red he pass 3 times

  • 5x4

  • Are you familiar with this particular tractor? I did not know they were putting 20 speed tramsmissions in 1972 'binders...

Every 5X4 I seen used a "brownie" box secondary separate transmission behind 5 speed "main" transmission including the dump truck I set up. Mine was an under/over drive, you could also buy a double low for severe service.

  • Actually it has NOTHING to do with air brakes. Back in the day... pre 1970's none of these diesels were turbo charged thus were quite weak. To haul the freight they needed to make use of a small torque curve. Giving the selection of a 5X4 you can do this. They also had not perfected the 2 speed axle nor the splitter type boxes of today.

On my home built dump truck (single axle L-8000 Ford) I put a 4 speed with over drive behind the 5 speed.

    Brent

  • This trucks gas powered

  • Reminds me of my old days driving a '66 Loadstar with a 5spd up front and a Eaton 2 speed rear split-shifting! Those old gas V8s really wound up hard, but lived up to the old International logo - "Too slow for the road, too fast for the field" Nice old truck!

  • I've never really understood the purpose of a twin stick transmision.

  • Since it doesn't have an air compressor (no air brakes) you can't run a regular single stick, so since you need more gears than the standard 5 speed, you add another transmission to be able to split gears in the main trans.

  • Its a nonsyncro like todays Road Rangers in todays Heavy trucks except instead of using air pressure to power the transmission. The twinstick is using your arm to shift the second transmission inside the gear box. Eaton RoadRangers rule period.

  • those things r pritty e.z to drive i'm 15 and i drove my oncle`s 1974 international just like that suprisingly e.z

  • This setup must have required a fast arm compared to the Mack TRT/TRQ tandem, which had both shift levers close together. BTW, would the rear shift lever work with a Muncie SM465 or New Process 435 or 4500 toploader retrofit on a pre-1987 General Motors G-series? The driver is alongside the bellhousing on the G.

  • Do city work all day in that thing as fun as it is and you would go back to an air operated countershaft transmission Il bet.

  • wow that truck sounds like a fucking gas hog and nice shifting too dude

  • Gas hog? You bet. Either get an economical old diesel, or if you want some more power and a something that (sounds like it) revs higher, a 2-stroke diesel. And always remember: "Real engines don't have spark plugs".

  • I learned to driye two sticks when I was 9 years old a 1962 chev truck on the farm and a B model mack logging truck that my dad had .now hes retire and I stil drive but i wood rather drive two stick but wel can/t so I DRIVE A THIRTEN SPEED .

  • Yeah, from deuce and a 1/2 up to 10 ton can be shifted 5X2...

  • Not as much as I expected, but probably 500 plus torque.

  • I think the torque is higher than 500ft/lbs

probibly well over a lb per cube...the specs should be in the repair manuals. MOTOR was always the most accurate for all the details...that's how I found out 396's went back into the 50's. If you want 1hp per cube, go high compression heads, takes gas burners to a whole new level.

  • Just out of curiosity, how much horsepower does the 549 gas engine make?

  • i tried to drive a truck with a 5&4 without power steering and it ended up being towed out of a ditch.

  • The Kenworth W-925 I was issued when I worked for "Overseas Freight Forwarders" had a 4X4 w/no powersteering...brought my own, 22 1/2"

arms I built in prison. Never wrecked a truck,

, never lost control, except for my temper. That's why I spent alot of time in prison...scrapping, but never ever did the road rage thing, I can rage just fine on my own...thank you very much.

  • Jesus! 3 shifters? Bet the first few weeks were hell learning all the various shift patterns. Nevertheless, my hats off to you sir, you keep on truckin.

  • My Daddy's friend showed me the tricks on the

climb, the 2spd helped me get out of the 1st Lo-lo, and was a good cheater when you needed to grab a gear mid grade under load...I made a game out of it, and learned about inventing gears...had 40 to choose from & you can't shift um all, so...

  • Excellent shifting, sir. Truly a lost art. I am going to get my CDL soon. The most gears I have ever had was a six speed in a International 4700 flatbed with 275 horsepower. One stick and no splitter. I have driven an 02 PB with the 550 horse CAT and a 15 speed (I think). Not that easy, but not that hard either. Only went a few miles with no trailer. Love the gas engine. Keep on truckin.

  • I love this video,,Im a 2 sticker myself.I grew up shifting 4x4,s & 6&4,s,, Im simply hooked.Thanks for the videos

    Nightwind Phoenix,AZ

  • When I started to drive to relief drive at the lumber company I worked at, all of our trucks accept for one were 5X4's and gas job Chevy's. I had gotten a little prior education on a 53 IH R210 with a 5X3. The guy that I taught asked why it had 2 sticks, I told him you've got two hands don't you??

  • Good Answer!!!

  • I guess not. 40 gears is a shitload of gears. But I can see where it gives you more versatility.

  • That's the beauty of the logging package Chief, especially the 15X4, your crawl speeds are beyond awesome, and you got overdrive too.

If your 15 is overdriven, then you got double over, etc... Once things dry up here in the Islands there's a Sweet little woman waiting for me in Kern county, I'll be setting up shop out there...see if I can do Logging Packages on the side out there.

  • I can see how that would give you greater versatility. Finer control over your RPMs. Let you dial in the ratio you need.
