Such a talent! It saddens me to hear these songs and think that people with talent like this get looked over today for those with flash and a catchy hook, where as in the past instead being over produced in a machine it was true artists that made it in the music industry.
def the best stern live show. I was blown away by woodstock. Total zone out song. Gets u thinking about life. Nothing like good tunes to pass the time.
just some great music, everytime i hear james taylor i think of my mom, and my aunts, and this guy i was on the indy with, his name was james taylor for texas
@motaj16 OK two of those are the greatest. that you would even mention Lady Gag, especially in the same sentence, is blasphemous. you deserve to be beaten . lol.
@motaj16 yea i get it. that version was ok. but stil. lol. i am an avid fan and i hear every show every day. but it took me a week to actually finally listen to that show becuz the first ten times it played i shut it off.
Howard stern as much as I love him is an asshole to make that comment about heroin addiction after James plays that crushing version of woodstock. Only you Howard could be such a fucking idiot to put a mood like that after getting such a jewel like that version from James.
I heard this live the morning this aired. I remember freezing in my tracks 'cause i didn't want to miss a moment of it. Reading the comments below, i got the biggest case of goosebumps from the top of my head to the soles of my feet. I had a smile that wrapped around my head. In particular, this version of Woodstock is a perfect moment in our imperfect lives. Cheers to you all.
I used to wake up in the morning to Stern. I'd set my alarm to radio as soon as the show would come on. Whenever he would open playing this clip I knew it was gonna be a good day. Epic rendition.
The biggest bumer is that Stern didnt know JT was starting, He thought they were still 'dialing it in', so he drops that awkward 'alright' which drives me nuts. Gotta figure a way to get that out. Amazing performance.
@darkoanton5 - standard tuning. as far as I'm aware, he always play in standard tuning (with an occasional dropped D). Can't remember him using any open tunings.
Yes, one of the best live performances on the Stern show. I also love Aerosmith doin' "Pink" with some street musicians they found. Honorable mentions to Stevie Wonder & Elton John as the best performers to ever play on Stern, if not the best performances.
@chrstlkcz Yes, one of the best live performances on the Stern show. I also love Aerosmith doin' "Pink" with some street musicians they found. Honorable mentions to Stevie Wonder & Elton John as the best performers to ever play on Stern, if not the best performances.
The only reason I think it sounds more than just the drop D is because J. Mitchell and S. Stills, who recorded both use open chords other than just the drop D. I'm going to keep listening to see if I can identify it exactly. Thanks soulfreek
Whoh! You were right. Its only the Drop D. The chord that was a mystery and found is the B string first fret. The rest of the strings are open (don't hit the low E.
The sound on this is terrible. What gives? I have this version on my computer and it's perfect. This version of the song transcends the original. And JT is a damned fine fingerstyle player as well.
where did you get your version? I have been wanting to hear this ("woodstock") and just realized I might find it on You Tube - but the quality is weak.
lol no its youtube that makes it sound bad....on the ACTUAL recording on sirius it's eerily perfect and sounds amazing. his vocals go so well with it and I think this is 10000x better then the original song.
get the actual show from this day and it sounds amaaazing. he also plays other stuff and it sounds just as good.
If you listen to this and you don't have something in your life somehow come to perspective you are not aware. There are times when a man (or a woman for that matter) can channel godliness. Woodstock NEVER sounded like this before and never will.
And a future vision. Real life is not a "life style option". Dreams are always good to have at any age, it is what keeps us human beings and what keeps us youthful. There is never a dream that is worth confining to the past. Live life fully to your dreams.
Just heard this on Stern Show Shuffle. Maybe the best JT performance ever. Especially Woodstock!

any guitar experts out there know the tuning used by James on this?
interstategar 2 years ago
I'm no expert but it sounds like drop D,
JT rarely uses anything other than standard or this. usually playing around with open chords and often making good use of a capo.
