  • Just heard this on Stern Show Shuffle. Maybe the best JT performance ever. Especially Woodstock!

  • Such a talent! It saddens me to hear these songs and think that people with talent like this get looked over today for those with flash and a catchy hook, where as in the past instead being over produced in a machine it was true artists that made it in the music industry.

  • Go James !!

    Jesse:P

  • Genius.

  • def the best stern live show. I was blown away by woodstock. Total zone out song. Gets u thinking about life. Nothing like good tunes to pass the time.

  • james could sing the phone book and sound like heaven!!!!!!!!!!

  • just some great music, everytime i hear james taylor i think of my mom, and my aunts, and this guy i was on the indy with, his name was james taylor for texas

  • Blew me away first time I heard this. The best version period. It sounds like being there.

  • Dave Groll, Lady GaGa, James Taylor

Three of the BEST live on Howard

  • @motaj16 OK two of those are the greatest. that you would even mention Lady Gag, especially in the same sentence, is blasphemous. you deserve to be beaten . lol.

  • @pkleo73 I know I was going out on a limb on Lady Ga Ga,

She made a believer out of me

see version Egde of Glory on Howard Show

  • @motaj16 yea i get it. that version was ok. but stil. lol. i am an avid fan and i hear every show every day. but it took me a week to actually finally listen to that show becuz the first ten times it played i shut it off.

  • Respond to this video... no 'believer' here...i stil dont like her. sry.

  • Howard stern as much as I love him is an asshole to make that comment about heroin addiction after James plays that crushing version of woodstock. Only you Howard could be such a fucking idiot to put a mood like that after getting such a jewel like that version from James.

  • I heard this live the morning this aired. I remember freezing in my tracks 'cause i didn't want to miss a moment of it. Reading the comments below, i got the biggest case of goosebumps from the top of my head to the soles of my feet. I had a smile that wrapped around my head. In particular, this version of Woodstock is a perfect moment in our imperfect lives. Cheers to you all.

  • I used to wake up in the morning to Stern. I'd set my alarm to radio as soon as the show would come on. Whenever he would open playing this clip I knew it was gonna be a good day. Epic rendition.

  • I remember the day he did this , and James Taylor is so freaking awesome, Ten times the singer now than he was in the seventies!!!!

  • Up at the top of Stern show performances with Pat Monahan from Train singing Dream On.

  • awesome performance

  • makes me want to burn a bowl on the beach, stars in the sky just blazeing and crying for not taking more advantage of the life i was given

  • ya truly amazing Cover!

  • 2 horns up!!!

  • *goosebumps*

The biggest bumer is that Stern didnt know JT was starting, He thought they were still 'dialing it in', so he drops that awkward 'alright' which drives me nuts. Gotta figure a way to get that out. Amazing performance.

  • anybody have a clip of when JT did 'Copperline' on stern?

  • Does anyone know if James Taylor tunes the guitar like Joni Mitchell for this song.

  • @darkoanton5 - standard tuning. as far as I'm aware, he always play in standard tuning (with an occasional dropped D). Can't remember him using any open tunings.

  • @martinaxman Thanks.

  • @darkoanton5 Didn't Joni accompany herself on the piano for "Woodstock"?

  • This song done by james on stern is so good it should be illegal

  • He doesn't need effects or hype...he just plays....

  • Yes, one of the best live performances on the Stern show. I also love Aerosmith doin' "Pink" with some street musicians they found. Honorable mentions to Stevie Wonder & Elton John as the best performers to ever play on Stern, if not the best performances.

  • This man is great!

  • Damn freakin' awesome. Three amazing songs, incredibly performed. If I could sing, I wish I could sing like James Taylor.

  • what a good singer and guitar player ppl just dont have this kind of talent anymore

  • Funny- the guy with the guitar standing to his left looks like James circa 1972.

  • @velvetunderpants44 I think thats his son

  • always great man, i've seen him live many times.

  • i was born in '82...and i know this is an all time great...fukcing awesome

  • I thinjk he's just dropped the high E down to D and left the bass alone

  • can someone please write a tab for this?! i think he also played it on the rock n roll hall of fame greatest hits video

  • ditto on the tab. At least someone give me some help. Definately drop D, maybe drop D on the high E not sure. anyone, Bueller?

  • This is quite simply amazing. More power in this music then in a million nuclear reactors!

  • Is there an MP3 for this anywhere? I need this for my ipod and can't find it anywhere! Help !

  • "Is there an MP3"

I have it if you're still looking.

  • I found an old MP2 file, but the quality is poor. I would love a better version. Thanks!

  • I love JT and get the chills whenever I hear this version. Thanks Howard!!!

  • Was never a fan until I heard him on Stern. He has a hypmotizing voice.Fantastic!!!!!....

  • Best live performance on Stern ever.

  • @chrstlkcz Yes, one of the best live performances on the Stern show. I also love Aerosmith doin' "Pink" with some street musicians they found. Honorable mentions to Stevie Wonder & Elton John as the best performers to ever play on Stern, if not the best performances.

  • I was listening to this on Sirius and almost ran my car off the road in a total mesmerized daze.....

  • @juspitts yea me too. i recorded it and listened to it a million times since then. and when i blaze up a bean, its on repeat..LOL

  • @pkleo73

Dude can you send me the recording? missed this 1 been following JT since I worked on the Vineyard in "79"

  • @BillHomolka i have to first find that program that allows you to rip the audio from this video. i dont kno what it is so i have to ask a friend.

  • @pkleo73 go to cnet.com and look for the free youtube downloader. There are a couple of different versions.

  • @juspitts Yeah, I hear ya, pulled over and cried like a 2yr old..

  • any guitar experts out there know the tuning used by James on this?

  • I'm no expert but it sounds like drop D,

JT rarely uses anything other than standard or this. usually playing around with open chords and often making good use of a capo.

  • The only reason I think it sounds more than just the drop D is because J. Mitchell and S. Stills, who recorded both use open chords other than just the drop D. I'm going to keep listening to see if I can identify it exactly. Thanks soulfreek

  • Whoh! You were right. Its only the Drop D. The chord that was a mystery and found is the B string first fret. The rest of the strings are open (don't hit the low E.

  • I think there are similar chords in the JT song "country roads".

This is a great cover...i've only heard it two or three times but keep coming back for more.

  • i remember listening to this live, and when it was over i forgot i was driving for a second

  • My favorite performance is Desperado... but this is by far the best version done of this song.

  • This is my favorite performance on the Stern show. I think I like it better than Dave Grohl playing "Everlong."

  • The sound on this is terrible. What gives? I have this version on my computer and it's perfect. This version of the song transcends the original. And JT is a damned fine fingerstyle player as well.

  • where did you get your version? I have been wanting to hear this ("woodstock") and just realized I might find it on You Tube - but the quality is weak.

  • scott the engineer is why it sounds back

  • lol no its youtube that makes it sound bad....on the ACTUAL recording on sirius it's eerily perfect and sounds amazing. his vocals go so well with it and I think this is 10000x better then the original song.

get the actual show from this day and it sounds amaaazing. he also plays other stuff and it sounds just as good.

  • what do you expect? he`s billion year old carbon

  • James is a legend and a hero.

  • i love this version of woodstock reall really great shit

  • I Heart JT! he reminds me of EVERYTHING that is good! I thank God for making such a wonderful beautiful spirit to share with the world!:)

  • I wad wondering if he ever did this version of the song anywere else other then Howard.

I remember driving and hearing this song when he played it. I had to pull over and just listen

  • maybe this was like the conversation god and satin had when they first met

  • One of a kind. What a voice.... He is always on!

  • absolutely sublime

  • If you listen to this and you don't have something in your life somehow come to perspective you are not aware. There are times when a man (or a woman for that matter) can channel godliness. Woodstock NEVER sounded like this before and never will.

  • LOVE the first song

  • A haunting presentation for the early boomers who realize the reality of youth is a past dream.

  • And a future vision. Real life is not a "life style option". Dreams are always good to have at any age, it is what keeps us human beings and what keeps us youthful. There is never a dream that is worth confining to the past. Live life fully to your dreams.

  • There will never be another James Taylor. That guy was and is fucking amazing.
