Thank you. We don't tend to eat our hens when they get older (and stop laying). I don't think I could put up with the rows I would get from next door if I ate one of my hens! lol So it's safe to name them.
I love the mill house! My grandmother was raised in a house (close to where I live now) that had a mill right behind it... It's no longer standing, but you can still see the dam that sat right behind it. I use to work on a chicken farm.. working with 28,000 chickens! Not fun.. lol
Oh Daniel, working on a chicken farm would be awful. :( The water that feeds our stream is dwindling away as the farmer drains the fields so the mill can no longger work at all, if it could we would have a water wheel in there, if only to light the hen house in the winter. We did have a water wheel when we first moved here 29 years ago, there was plenty of water then. Time change though. :)
Oh Dorrie, I love your place! What a beautiful out in the country!! Your hens are so pretty! Funny that they like grapes and that they all head to their pen when you come waking out. LOL Do you get many eggs from them? Oh, you even have pussy willows - a sure sign of spring! :D
Hi Mysteryglo, we love it in the country. We did live in the town for a few years, but it was only a stopgap until we found our place. :)
We are now getting 3 eggs a day, it's been working up since Christmas when I would get one egg every other day or so. Soon I will be giving them away. :)
I hope one of my hens goes broody so that we can have some chicks too.
I just love where you live Dorrie. You have pussywillows too !!! Yay! Do your chickens ever get tame enough to let you pet them? They are very pretty. If you could get a mill wheel working..wouldn't that be grand? Hugs, Chris
Thank you Chris, we love it too. If you see my answer to Daniel, it tells about water wheels and stuff. I used to have the hens quite tame when I first had them, most of them would eat from my hand then, but hens get replaced, the silky is new to me (about 6 months ago) and has only just started to integrate properly. The marans are normally best for pet hens as they do get tame, but I just feed them and sit with them and film/photograph them.
We have lived here for 29 years. About 15 years ago our house was 100 years old and we had a party. I keep meaning to drag out those photos - everyone came in perioud costume.
Looks gorgeous where you are! Lol at Meggie. She doesn't want to left out of the grape feast.
