(continued) He may be the last true clown the world will ever know, and he’ll go away without large numbers of us knowing to shed a tear. And meanwhile the MDA can carry on as though they never needed him, Harry Shearer can go on making funny voices and the world can go on jeering at Krusty the Clown and snoring through Harry’s stuff on dvd. It’s so depressing the only thing I know to do is to watch Jerry’s movies (especially The Patsy and The Ladies Man). They always cheer me up.
Jerry’s only fault is that he’s human. It turns out you can’t be both a clown and a human being in this country. Jerry was too complicated a personality for a generation raised on Barbara Walters and her celebrity droids, and now he’s too complex for their hateful children. We’ve arrived at an age where you either love or you hate; we’ve become essentially vicious, and our reception of Jerry today shows us for what we are: true American idiots, a scary number of us. (continued)
@Scott93205 How true! Sadly, how true --- Jerry Lewis is a breed of comic genuis that is of the type the public only appreciates after they are gone. Then the accolades of GENIUS and NEVER BE ANOTHER are showered upon them. He is in the genus of clowns like Keaton and Chaplin. I can only look nostalgically hate to see this guy get old. Also hate that those "other" days of entertainment are gone.Give me a time machine so I can go to 1958 - 1978.
I've watched his telethons over the years, since the late '60's. This was the most difficult time he's had closing the telethon with his signature song. It leads me to believe that he already knew, at that point in time, that it was to be his last telethon.
Why is he crying? OMG. How about 'cause the Man has a heart and has worked more than half his life raising money to help others, when he could have just made his fortune in his profession and hang out in Palm Springs. And maybe he knew this would be his last telethon.
If it wasn't for Jerry MDA wouldn't have raised all the money that they did! Jerry Lewis cared for "his kids" I believe he was and always will be "real" MDA without Jerry is nothing! I won't watch again!!
I love Jerry Lewis loved you from a very young age started watching the telethon when I was 12 years old in 1969 my friend told to watch it .and I never stop watching god bless you and your family
Jerry for 43 years I and my children , now adults have all cared enough for a man- his team and all the people who put on something that made us ALL FEEL BETTER ABOUT OURSELVES.. Love you Jerry forever ever..Lillie/philillie
After the events this year, I just saw the saddest moment in entertainment; Jerry Lewis putting his mic on the stool on the Telethon for the last time.
If this was not all an act, I would think there is the distinct possibility that he knew he would not be back. This, and the knowledge that he will not be around much longer, his better days behind him, made him break up.
It is sad to see. If this is what happened, he shouldn't be sad. He's been fortunate in this life.
This made me cry. Poor Jerry! I always loved him and his movies since I was a child. I still have some of them. I laugh just hard as I did the first time every time I see them. If Jerry did not want to quit and he his health was not bad then he should have been allowed to continue to host this telethon. He sincerely cared for these kids and I hope that his legacy and love will continue. I didn't even watch it this year. Much love to Jerry. We love you no matter what.
Jerry, like many of his fading vaudeville era, is a perfectionist because he worked very hard to make a success of himself and put on a good show and felt that everybody around him should have the same standards and work ethic as he did. Had you seen the entire segment prior to asking for the lights to be turned down, you would've known that he complimented his entire crew for the job they did. he wasn't berating anybody about the lights,it was just his way of asking.
I was disgusted by the telethon this year. The whole thing felt like an act. The hosts looked like they were forced to do it. The entertainment was hogwash. It will never be the same. I had to come on here to hear You'll Never Walk aloneon more time.
You could tell he was singing this song and putting the mic down for the final during last year telethon. We all knew he was getting up in years and one day he wouldn't be on the telethon anymore. I wonder why he was so emotional last year and now we all know why. THANK YOU for years of smiles and making us care. I will miss you on labor day but i will remember the song and the hard work you have done for the people with MD. God Bless You! America THANK YOU!
Jerry may very well have known that this was going to end up being his last telethon. Whatever internal problems that were going on between him and the MDA were probably going on for a long time and finally came to a head recently.
wow! that's really hard to watch..I did not see last year's telethon..May God bless this bless for his good works...I am not ashamed to admit that i cried along with him...
We have watched Jerry grow old and begin to fade as we all will. We will miss him and remember all the good that he has accomplished over the years. Thank you Jerry and God bless you
Mi querido Jerry. Como me hubiera gustado tener el honor de estrecharte las manos. Ha sido un honor el haber compartido este mundo y este tiempo contigo. Ryan . Buenos Aires - ARGENTINA
This year (2011) will be Jerrys last telethon. Unlike its usual 21 1/2 hour format, it's going to be cut back to 6 hours .Nontheless, this years telethon will be television history in the making as we thank Jerry Lewis for the memories. This man has helped raise 2.5 Billion dollars since the telethon first took air. Absolutely amazing. He will still be the chairman of the MDA until the day he dies...but as for host of the telethon, its time to say goodbye. Thank you Jerry for the memories.
Jerry just announced today that he is retiring from the Telethon. I think he knew in 2010 that this would be one of his last appearances as host. A class act.
Bob, I don't know if you saw the Telethon on Labor day, but this is Jerry's gut wrenching rendition of his swan song. I never saw him so broken up with emotion. WOW..I wonder if Dean knew he was so emotional. At least we have something in common...I'm very sensitive and emotional, as you know. Talk to you soon. Love ya. Jeff
