This number has many haters? really? It's one of my faves in the show, not so much the moment, but the song itself is just so beautifully and lushly orchestrated, I can't help but like it. I have very fond memories of seeing the amazing Judy Kuhn belt this song onstage at the Shubert with Alan.
I think the goal ALW was trying to accomplish with this song was to have it reflect the sappy love duets of 1940s/50s musicals. It reminds me of "They Say It's Wonderful" from Annie Get Your Gun and "You Stepped Out of A Dream" from the god-awful Singin' in the Rain. Only this one has a much more serious, and touching, undertone. It's one of my personal favourites from the show.
