  • For anyone reading this, it's true. Check out MelonManMedia's for tour summaries of local skate spots.

    The only thing I'd caution all skaters about is if you are using City of Mississauga parks, be EXTREMELY careful about the City's security guards. I've been researching them through Freedom of Information since January 2007 and it's disgraceful what they do to youth.

    If approached by them, turn on your cells! When told to leave, do so immediately. Record, the guard's number too. Can't hurt.

    The artist and me actually had it out in my Blog. You might find his name by Googling "Allegory of Good Government" because that's what he named the thing.

    To be clear, and here's the truth.

    I'd have had ZERO problem with this painting had he called it "60 Seconds Before Being Banned 30 Days".

    I've given this painting tons of thought and am a bit of an artist myself. Studied it at university --even taught it.

    I'm sure you know about propaganda paintings. Paintings from the 30-40's showing the glory of German supremity. Soviet glory paintings... etc

    That's what you're looking at here. The painting was created for display --in a government Art Show.

    I could do a terrific painting of four skaters arrested by two guards at City Hall. Think that would hang?

  • people outside of hawaii surf and skateboard. there was no mention of snowboarding ect.. i hope you had a good vacation when you saw skaters and surfers and saw a sea turtle in a pool.

    so it appears hat you ook grea offence to this paining because it is your job to keep people from skating there. it seems you took these comments personally as well.

    Actually I took great offense to this painting because it's a LIE. It creates the impression that skaters are welcome to skate off those City Hall steps. Any skater doing that would be told to LEAVE.

    Next, I am not a City of Mississauga Security guard --I am RESEARCHING them. Freedom of Information has confirmed that they ban kids as young as 9/10 and my particular interest is how they treat skateboarders.

    I have a HUGE problem with these guards' treatment of youth! HUGE!

  • Sorry to break it to you, but the security gaurds usually only ticket people who are being assholes to them. I've been kicked out of city hall for skating MANY times with no tickets or court dates to show. They know we aren't causing harm to anyone! Maybe you are lacking fun in your life and forgot what it feels like to be FREE and not held down by so many restrictions!

    Why do you think these guards would kick out a 9/10 year old girl from the Civic Centre and ban her from the CC, Central Library and also the Living Arts Centre for 30 days.

    Security guards ban them and write up whatever the F*** they feel like about kids.

    And the City KEEPS those personal records on kids in their database.

    So. If you've had "REAL LIFE experience" with this unaccountable quasi-fascist knob-force you'll need to file Freedom of Information to see what they have on YOU!

    You'd be amazed at the number of kids who these guards have banned for "skateboarding". Kids as young as 11/12.

    And kids as young as 12/13 ARRESTED at that skateboard area.

    Skateboarders better be very careful around those Mississauga City Security guards! Those guards can change kids' lives for the WORSE!

    You won't BELIEVE what they write about people in their "records"!

  • I was one of those kids back in the day.

    We used to skate INSIDE square 1, in the 70's. We used to escape the guards through those secret tunnels behind the stores and jump on a bus for -15 cents- back then.

    The only future we have is through our offspring, yet money is spent foolishly invading other countries with them or chasing younger ones on skateboards.

    I believe that painting was politcal satire.

    To be clear. The security guards at Square 1 aren't the problem! If a Square 1 Security guard gets physically abuses a skater, that kid (or parent) can file a formal complaint TO THE PROVINCE for investigation.

    That kid gets roughed up by a City of Mississauga Security guard at the Civic Centre skate plaza, they're limited to City Security investigating the conduct of its own guards.

    Freedom of Information has shown NO youth/minor to ever complain against guards.

  • Ah, I didn't realize the line of demarcation between the two security branches. I'm glad to hear one is more tolerant than the other.

    Regarding your research, you may find the documentary film: Dogtown and Z-Boys useful. Narrated by Shaun Penn.

    I find that painting to be fascinating.

    Especially the woman in the wheelchair, which defines a mobility device as well.

  • Skateboarding really is 'awesome". I'm currently researching the Skate culture (both Urban and West Coast) skateboarders at the highest level are every bit the athlete as those of others sports. (in some cases even more).

    I hope one day to see skateboarding as an Olympic Sport.

    The purpose of this video was to warn skaters (and kids in general) about the Mississauga City Hall security guards.

    You see that's the other thing I'm researching. The bans and arrests issued by these guards to YOUTH.

    Considering the number of skateboarders who've been banned from Mississauga City Hall (I secured the City records through Freedom of Information) skateboarders are much better off over at Square One.

    I agree absolutely.

    For one thing, if anyone were to "brush" iwth security guards, Square One security guards are regulated by the Province.

  • ANNOUNCEMENT. MISSISSAUGAWATCH secured Freedom of Information (FOI) records on the number of people banned/trespass/arrested at the Mississauga Civic Centre.

    FOI records confirm that a minimum of 22 Youth were banned from Mississauga City Hall property for skateboarding-related offences.

    22 skaters (as young as 12) were banned for "Skateboarding -disturbance".

    Two skaters were banned for 365 days, much longer than many banned "Drugs" and "Liquor".

  • These records are from January 2006 to present and do not include "informal" bans by Mississauga Corporate Security guards which don't have to be entered into the records.

    In addition, a quick scan shows 8 Trespass-bans and 2 Arrests both for "Trespass" (which could be skaters attempting to return)

    I dive with sea turtles.

    On Maui, I watched the skateboarders do their crazy stuff on this Lahaina tennis court. Many skate with a surfboard tucked under an arm.

    Here's my wish for you, filmde. That you go to Lahaina, Maui, and skateboard with the locals opposite the Kameha iki Park.

    And you're a skater so surfing should be easy. Surf with the HONU! (Honu is Hawaiian for green sea turtle) Aloha.

  • wordhype, first off the "potheads" aren't trespassing. You can't be charged with trespassing until you've been given a ticket (banned) for not leaving City Hall property when ordered to do so. If you're banned and you return before your ban is up, THEN you're charged with trespass. Again, a skater enjoying boarding at the designated "Skate Plaza" can do as he pleases. He skates anywhere else, he's vulnerable to having a heart-to-heart with a guard. If the kid lipped off?...

  • Hi again. Agreed, I found the potters funny. That city hall has so many video surveillance cameras, not to mention signs and rules. Two sophisticated Pelco PTZ's aimed at the front civic square. And there, unconcerned, tucked where the cams can't penetrate weed triumphed.

    I'd have laughed if skaters were tucked under that same roof doing tricks.

    Someone wrote earlier saying make all the signs you want, you can't make us follow them. It's perfectly true. Same with graffiti for that matter.

In Hawaii many of the surfers are also skaters and in Lahaina on Saturdays they skate on a tennis court there, bringing in their own ramps. Very different skate "culture". Aloha.

  • I'm not sure if you know anything at all about art history, but the word "allegory" especially with regards to art indicates a sort of double meaning. I'm guessing that the "allegory" in this case is that IF the government would allow skateboarding on those steps that they would indeed, be "good". The artist hasn't said it's legal to skate there, you've just misinterpreted the word, which, given your chosen profession and demonstrated vocabulary in this video, isn't at all surprising.

  • Actually I know quite a bit about art history. Now I don't know what you know about allegory but just a quick Google turned up, " J. R. R. Tolkien's emphatic statement in the introduction to the second edition "It is neither allegorical nor topical....I cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations, and always have done so since I grew old and wary enough to detect its presence."

    For the record, the three who were smoking weed weren't "kids". What I found amusing was Mississauga city hall bristles with video surveillance cameras and what I found such a lark was how easily those three just tucked themselves under some roofing and that's all it took.

  • Its a painting not a picture. I think you have to much time on your hands. I have skated city hall since it was built. My tax dollars helped pay for it, I believe I should get to use it, even if I use it for something it was intended for. A trespassing ticket can easily be fought in court and won. Most cops don't show up for those little things so it will get thrown out.

  • I've been researching bans, trespass and especially arrests on municipal properties (parks, city halls). I've got "tags" right here showing skaters/kids banned as young as 13 from a local city hall. Just like that.

    Suggestion for something constructive with YOUR time. Research bans and arrests of youth by SECURITY GUARDS.

    Its a painting, not a photograph. I have skated city hall since the day they started building it.

    You can pass as many bylaws as you want, we are still going to skate there. If you want to give CHILDREN tickets for playing, we will teach them to stand up for their rights and take it to court.

    Maybe you want to start a better community program that actually does something constructive for the community? Just a thought!!!

  • Hey, as long as you're skating at the skate plaza (NE corner of city hall) you're fine. Go anywhere else on the property and you're chancing being instructed to limit your skating to the designated area. Argue, and you risk banning. Argue more and lose your board. Read the sign. Here's a thought for you. You better teach your children that they don't HAVE RIGHTS if there's a by-law that says you don't.

    Feel free to test your skating rights outside that NE side plaza. And of course -court.

  • Hi bulbasuar. The point is that the painting, called "Allegory of Good Government" is propanganda and false at that. Kids aren't allowed to skate on those steps at Mississauga City Hall. There's even a sign that says that the security guards there can confiscate your boards! Some kid seeing this silly painting and then tripping it over to those city hall steps and --he can lose his frikkin' board! The purpose is to warn skaters --and even trick bikers.
