The best esophageal speaker I have ever heard was the late William Gargan. He was an actor who played the part of Martin Kane, Private Eye on an early television show of the same name. He developed throat cancer and had to undergo a laryngectomy. He mastered esophageal speech. Some have stated that he used an artificial larynx for his public speaking. While this may have been true near the end of his life, he basically taught himself esophageal speech and sounded quite natural.

His name is Qazi Zain and he was operated for laryngeal cancer 20 years ago. He learned esophageal speech from japan and perfected his speech over years. He is probably the worlds best esophageal speaker and a good trainer too. And who else can encourage a cancer patient then a laryngectomized patient himself ! We have established a post laryngectomy speech rehabilitation clinic in CMH Rawalpindi ENT Department. We teach both electrolarynx and esophageal speech.

here are few tips for the learners
1. first thing is to keep ur morale high. It takes time so one should not stop trying.
2. taking a lot of water helps.
3. Soda drinks also help.
4. some beginners press the lower part of their neck with their hand ... that helps in controlling the expulsion of air in a controlled manner.
