if saint agustine said "dont give me expensive expensive clothing as a give" then why the hell the pope wear expensive clothing and live and the grandiose basilica :/.. imagine maintaining such things must cost alot of money

The clothes aren't even his,but the catholic church.The basilica is large building with many arts,it's God's home and shelter to the pope

"I know thy tribulation and thy poverty, but thou art rich" (Rev. 2:9). All these things where donated mostly from rich people. And what to say to them, if they have so much to give of temporal goods? No, or Yes? They that donated it will not be rewarded for their generosity towards the Church of God? St. Augustine used to say that because it is the dutie of the Church to give to the poor. And probbably he had enough clothing already and leaded a life of exterior penitence, right?
