@bojerka I listened to this in 79 when I was 11 (forced too by my music teacher)! I didn't appreciatice then but I Fucking well do now! GREAT SINGER, GREAT SONG!!Long live you! Lots of Love!! AUSTRALIA!
Hello all, if you could please reply, my teacher recently passed away, and one thing he said to me was, "all around my hat i shall wear the tiny mammal" do you know if that has any relation to this song??? it means alot to me, could someone please reply. It's been stuck in the back of my mind. Thank you for your reply if you know.
First off, I completely respect your teacher if this is indeed where he picked it up. But the "the tiny mammal" parody line comes from a particularly musical comedian: Bill Bailey. In his show "Bewilderness" after sampling an audience member's voice, he made fun of it claiming it had 'gone a bit folky' and from there he broke into that song. You probably won't be able to find the show on youtube, but search the net and you shall surely find it.
Tri Coloured Ribbon is betta ;P Just harder to remember the name of it ;P so i always end up on this.... The Wolfe Tones - Tri Coloured Ribbon for those who does the same mistake ;P
Tim Hart, one of the original members of the folk rock band Steeleye Span, passed away on December 24th 2009, of lung cancer, he was aged 61, rest in peace.
Though this version is British, there is an Irish version called "Tri Coloured Ribbon" performed by the Wolfe Tones, and probably a few others. "tri Coloured Ribbon", is abouth the Easter RIsing of 1916.
@seanryan22 well the guy u always see in the hat joined the Pogues after this, great song many sang about mourning their loved ones for a 12 month and a day, check out Luke Kelly singing The Unquiet Grave, peace to all
Thanks for the Span. Anyone out there have WIFE OF THE SOLDIER or SHIP OF THE BLACK FREIGHTER? I think they are off the LP STORM FORCE TEN around 1978.
This is the one that got me loving SS in the early 70s. Maddy Prior, Annie Haslam and Emmylou Harris had the BEST female voices of the time. Others were great, but these were the BEST!
Lol i were listening to this in ma music lesson todaii and it actually quite gd. We had to do a listenin exam on it and then sing it. I now like steeleye span.

The band are not Irish or West Country etc. In fact Maddy Prior the lead singer is from Blackpool.

There is an Irish version from the turn of the century but the original is from about a 100 years earlier and was a London street ballad.
grassic 2 years ago
@grassic - there is no 'original' version of this. For the recording SS conflated "All Around My Hat" with another traditional song, "Farewell He".

Maddy Prior is one of the best folk singers in the world today, Love her live performances with Steeleye Span
and would love to see her do more songs with Mike Oldfield.

Steeleye Span is a British electric folk band, formed in 1969.

@machree01
I played few other songs of theirs and found they also played Celtic.
And...you can not stop clapping your hands when you are listening to it.

A great group, a wee bit heavy on the drums but the harmony is good.
lorgain2 3 years ago
Some lovley harmonies here, quiet a tame version of the Peadar Kearney song as sang by The Wolfe Tones
catalpa 3 years ago
That would be because Peadar Kearney based his song on an English folksong popular in Ireland. Steeleye collated theirs from traditional sources.
