Sorry for the late reply, but you mean this came from something older than Animal Crossing right? I heard the K.K. songs are based off of something else. K.K. Country for example is supposed to be that one place in Mario Kart 64.

Bones is male in both City Folk and Wild World. If the color around there name when you talk to them is blue, it's a boy, when it's pink, it's a girl. This trick doesn't work on special characters, as they have green around there name.
