i may not have the old dinosaur like i wanted but i did get the last year of the great 12 valve, 22-24 mpgs, 4x4 5 speed, crew cab long box shes a damn land yacht and ill never sell er
Love how they beat the trucks into rock filled roads, nowadays you see these commericals and the trucks are either crawling on the rocks, or driving on city streets.
The cool part about this is these were pretty rare to see (until '94) even here in TX back in the late 80's/early 90's. Most trucks were obviously Ford or Chevy but these looked great.
@ntxguy I see alot of these early 12V Cummins Dodges, and I live just North of Houston, they were by far and away the best Diesel trucks built at their time, Fords were fuel hogs and GMs were lacking in the power department.
But that being said, I dont see ANY nondiesel powered Dodge of that body style around anymore.....
@alanisgirl2010 I own a 89 2500 LE diesel. I just used it to pull a Bob cat , and a total of 30 pallets of sod. She is 22 yrs old, and pulls better than my brand new Ford F 350. She is a beast! And I get about 28 mpg in her if I dont just romp and stomp the acceleration. But She's been known to burn her tires, and even 'race' a little. Hands down, my favorite truck.
Haha, sure, if your assuming it's stock.. The Garret T55s and split-header (with a full dual exhaust) have surely boosted it's power, although I've yet to throw it on a dyno..
I dunno I like my dads 96 basically a second gen version of my 90 4x4 5 speed though I hate the power range on it and the body roll on corners some things seem tougher. Dad hit a deer last fall n wrote off his 95 he had Ive seen a first gen after hitting a deer n I'll take the gen 1 I'd take my first gen over the second gen. And I have no plans to sell my dodge anytime soon.
@randytune88 the 6.9's and 7.3 idi's were though motors, good economy unless you have the C6 and 4x4 like me lol bit under powered though up top, but very good tq down low, banks or hyper max will solve that :)
My Friend has a 1 Gen 1989 Dodge D-250 160HP 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel 5 speed 4X4. Its got 620,000k & it still runs strong!!!!!! Yeah CUMMINS RULES DON`T MESS WITH A CUMMINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love how these trucks came with a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty in 1989. That's a killer warranty for that year. Mines got 315,000 miles and still running strong as ever
Its so weird that these things are called 1st gen's, when their probably the 17th generation of dodge pickup bodystyles, and probably the 4th diesel engine they've had. People say that about toyota pickup's too, the 79-83 is considered the 1st gen, but toyota was making trucks since the 60's at least.
@tommartyn they're called 1st gens because it when they actually started calling the pickups rams. before that they were known as the d series and i believe the cummins was the first diesel engine to be put in a dodge
Nah, they're just called 1st gen's because its the first bodystyle that had the cummins diesel. Not because of the ram thing. They've always had different names through the years, as well as a D and a K model name. My friend drew has a W250, its a 93, and has a cummins in it. So the D and K thing continued.
But dodges have had a few different diesels in them before the cummings.
clessie lyle cummins developed the cummins diesel engine in 1917 so yes cummins made cummins......cummins and jacobs industries also invented the jake brake cummins developed it and jacobs got the name put on it
I miss these old dodges I had a 79 sno commander 3/4 ton with the 360. I could haul two tons of gravel in that truck and it only squatted slightly. My 03 dodge 2500 with the cummins with the same amount on was much worse but it ran down the road like it wasn't back there! The old 360 in the 79 on the other hand you were working it for sure. My opinion is the old 72-93 trucks have better suspensions then the newer ones from my experiences with both!
but those trucks where trucks. now trucks are made to ride like cars... sad really but then again people who bought those truck didnt want a grocery getter that works they wanted a truck
@ExMxer 't bother me have the name of the diesel engine on the side of my pickup, ford did it before with the 3208 caterpillar, and they do it all the time on semitractors
I have the printed dealer brochure for 1993 Dodge trucks which the original owner got when he bought my 1993 Dodge Ram 250 LE Cummins Turbo Diesel truck. Also have the Chrysler factory service manual, which is nice.
They would have sold even more if they had just had a commercial with a cummins sitting parked idling......also, those dually's cracked me up.....Uh, yeah here's our lame attempt to join the dually market.....we'll just pop rivet some pieces of plastic on the side of the bed and wahlah!!! Oh if we could only go back to the good ole 80's......
I wish they still had good commercials! Japanese trucks are okay and get small jobs done, but when you need a truck for a trucks job you NEED American! and with a Cummins Diesel thrown in it just gravy!
I had a 1989 Dodge D250 that I purchased new. Had the Cummins Turbo Diesel. It was a great truck, fun to drive & got 24 MPG. Sold it to a friend in 1998 & he's still driving it with over 300,000 miles!

I don't think a few mph would make that much difference, besides that it would take forever to get anywhere.(As a side note it had a 35 gallon fuel tank ,when fuel was $1.19 fuel ups were reasonable, now $4.35 a gallon you need a loan to fill it)
haha I've seen my dad's Range Rover Supercharged register 88.2mpg downhill
anything is possible in the right circumstances, but obviously more like 15 is average on the RR
cruising I reckon you'd make 25 or so in the Cummins but you'd struggle to average 30...maybe in a '94 onwards model with better aerodynamics.you'd want a manual too

yes it is hard to believe but it sadly is true that gets 7mpg. I have the 360ci in my truck ( 78 lil red express without the original motor ) but I also have a 440ci bored .060 over and it will get over 500hp easy maybe even 600hp +.

I don't know if 30 mpg is possible, 24 mpg was back when the speed limit was 55 mph. Best I ever heard was 27 mpg. Back then every one ask you questions at the fuel pump. lol!
My dads tdi vw has mpg gauge!
wild mpg figures!
My mate had an xjs v12, got below 0.5mpg according to gauge sometimes!
Seriously though, my range rover with tdi200 could get 30mpg, but thats only 2.5!
A big understressed engine at hardly any throttle may get 24mpg.
I have obsereved 10 tonne trucks getting 18mpg on a run! so the driver told me anyway!?
I have seen a 2000bhp locomotive getting almost 1mpg, but rails= low rolling resistance.
2x nbl manl12v with voith transmissions.
tpvalley 3 years ago
I could almost afford to run that here in UK.
what I would give for a chunky diesel with good mpg in a coold truck.
My friend has a ford ranger 2.5 turbo diesel and he struggles to get 23mpg!! I shit u not!
If he can get similar mpg with a 5.9 then he WILL be pissed off!
I reckon if u drive hard u will get very low mpg though right? like about 15mpg?
tpvalley 3 years ago
yeah, I've got a video somewhere of a field run me and a friend did a while back in my dads Range Rover
can't upload it because I had no permission!
I may upload it again sometime
anyway we got 2.8mpg on that run
a friend of mine has a 2002 Cummins 2500 with a 5 speed.remember that's a 24v....he races round and he reckons he gets about 15mpg
10 tonne @ 18mpg?I've known some Mercedes Actros' @ about 12 litre to get that...I assume it's due to the serious amount of ratios to choose from
iainthornton 3 years ago
the bigger the engine for a given amount of cylinders the higher the thermal efficiency per cc.
When studying my lecturer always said to never go for the smallest engine option in trucks as they often use more fuel if the have to be thrashed.
Theres a video on here of a land rover and 59 cummins with different axles etc!
probably better mpg than v8!! and more power!
tpvalley 3 years ago

yes it is hard to believe but it sadly is true that gets 7mpg. I have the 360ci in my truck ( 78 lil red express without the original motor ) but I also have a 440ci bored .060 over and it will get over 500hp easy maybe even 600hp +.

I gues u must have a petrol engine!
Over here in uk folk get LPG conversions for bigger yank engines, u know liquid petrolium gas?
or even propane, but that freezes the lines in winter I heard.
