I primarily work with Hohner Special 20s, although I've used Marine Band and Big River. Both have been adequate, although my preference is for the 20s. Ease of bending is phenomenal. mostly it's the decent seal on the comb and the shape of the cover plates that appeal to me.
I suggest you learn the scales, and then learn note bending. Bending is hard to learn, but imparts a lot of feeling to the music. So do dynamics (change of volume at different parts of the song for emphasis)
What do you mean by learning the scales? I think i know how to bend but its hard to bend whilst playing i think... :s.....Ive got a harmonica in the key of c but a cheap one, what key is more bluesy and things?
C can be quite bluesy, but I also like the B and Bb harps, as well as D. It takes a while to get used to bending while playing, but with practice it will become second nature.
This was an awesome piece. And I want to learn how to play amazing grace, but everywhere I look they do it wrong. You wouldn't happen to have the tab for what you played or where I could find it do you? This is one of my fav. songs on harmonica. I've been playing for awhile now. I usually make my own stuff up though. Help me if you can. Thanks! And keep the vids coming! Awesome job!!!
wow i try and play amazing grace- i am a beginner. and i wish i could play as well as you do! thank you for the video. how does a harmonica player know how to get to one whold and not land in between wholes also how do you blow into only one whole?
There are different ways to isolate single holes. I use lip-pursing, which is more or less accurate puckering.
Start by practicing the major scale, starting with the 4 hole blow and working up on the harmonica.
Once you feel comfortable with that, try 'Michael, Row the Boat Ashore' and 'Oh Susannah' and other simple tunes like 'When the Saints Go Marching In'.
These are the bare basics that you must establish before getting on to the more advanced techniques.
This is exactly what I want to learn. I love the black and white with the blues harp. Really fits. You are very talented. If you have any tips for beginners such as myself please feel free leave some.
Always overjoyed to hear that someone is interested in learning to play the harmonica.
I still consider myself a student. I taught myself mostly(Never had one-on one lessons or went to any classes)
I started out with a key of C harmonica myself. Try to get used to sindle note playing(very important for most blues tunes to be able to blow single notes)
Practise the scale. If you know any bends, practise them as part of the scale.
Thanks. It's kinda funny, but I did that one months ago, and I think I would probably do it differently yet again if I took another stab at it.
The cool think with such a gospel standard is that it's so recognizable that you can do it with a million different variations and it's still immediately identifiable.
Hi Kokoro86, i like to hear your progression in playing, very importent are the drawbendings, when u can take for that a few lessons and keep practising.

how do you get that backdrop to look like that?

It's actually just a wall behind me. I changed the brightness and contrast. Those are about the only filters I used.

I can play it but i want to add more feeling in it, any ideas how?

Youtube Resources:
JamCamp06 aka Jon Gindick is an excellent tutor for beginners. So is 12GageDan.
Kudzurunner provides both free and paid blues harp lessons geared towards intermediate and advanced players, but often covers some basic skills.
I suggest checking out their lessons starting at the beginning and don't rush ahead.
Be patient, and practice your little backside off. You have to practice to get better.
Best of luck!

I love it. Can you tell me what key that harp is and what position?
coop344 5 years ago
I actually can't recall with 100% from memory, but I believe it was a key of F harp played cross in possibly second position.
