Great to finally see this again. Been searching since the first time I saw it. NWT always came on at the end of Night Flight, and was like this secret subversive hotline to the revolution.
You are entitled to your opinion, but in mine this material all but sucks. A very essencial component in the evolutionary chain of music as well as art.
There was none of the distribution channels available now back them, so you have to appreciate how unique this exposure was. In some ways, better than today, because when you are not as ubiquitous, you retain your uniqueness. This show started as public access and ended up as a bit of a sacred trust when we realized how many people we were reaching weekly.
I got a better Rayonics clip I will post as soon as I can find it. NWT was open to many musical forms and as such was not strictly punk, but more of a rolling celebration of the local music scene in LA at the time that got instant national exposure because of cable tv.
Hey Jolt--Do you have a copy of the Rayonics doing "Skeleton with a Raincoat Hat On"? I've been trying to find a copy for over 20 years, and have begun to think that they never recorded it in the studio--but I know they performed it on NWT--it's etched into my brain. That song has been haunting me all these years! Please, please, please tell me you have a copy!! Thanks-
The singer was the drummer's girl friend and worked at Ball Beauty the local hair products emporium and a hang-out for local musicians in the 80's. This was a local scene gone national thanks to USA national, so I had to put her in.
They had a really cool dance song that I had taped from channel 18 back in 1982 also. I forget the title now.
The drummer of the Fibonaccis contacted me personally for my copy of their performance of "Skeleton with the Raincoat Hat on" but sadly told him that the VHS tape is in my mom's garage; not a problem if I wasn't living in Argentina, then I'd copy it for him!
The monks banging the drums are in his tradition too. I used to watch (and record on VHS video) episodes of New Wave Theatre in the early 80s, but in the early 90s I spent some time visiting the Buddhist Peace Pagoda in western Massachusettes, which is a branch of the same lineage of Nichidatsu Fuji. I was so impressed by him that I did an independent study in college on his life and teachings.
SoulQuest7 Do you have any copies of those recordings? I am looking for a video of a band called SofaMusik that was on a NWT with 45 Grave & Gun Club. Just thought I'd ask. If you or anybody else has a copy contact me at steve @ halemcdonald . com

Nichidatsu Fuji!! That monk in the wheel chair who is grinning is Nichidatsu Fuji, a Buddhist monk who spent his whole life organizing peace marches.
