Medicare "as we know it" was doomed to fail from the start. Democrats all know it. It needs to be fixed. Democrats don't want to fix it. They want a reason to raise taxes on everyone later.

The only problem medicare faces is the same problem medical care in this country has faced for years, the cost of medical care has gone from about 6% of GDP in 1994 to some 17% now, heading for 20% if it isn't already there.

Sweden had medical costs near that of the US in 1994, but they adopted national health care then, and their costs were 12% of GDP last I looked a few months ago. That would make a difference of $1trill/yr here.
