@drawingablankduhhh I dont think it's sad, just a little haunting. After Major Tom went into space, he saw the magnificence beyond our world. After that, he didn't want to come back to Earth. It's very poetic, and my curiosity begs for me to see what it was Major Tom saw.
I want to play this song while going down the high way. And every chorus just nail the throttle and never slow down. Just down shift and go. I think my car taps out at 147 mph or so..................
Isn't this song based of a true event? I know its not about an astronaut named Major Tom but my dad said that david bowie made it as a tribute to a guy who died in space. does anyone know if thats true? Does anyone now more about it?
this is such a sad song I'm addicted to it though ever since i've been more curious about whats out there. (space)
@SelenaGomeznum1fan16 - Although there were two Apollo astronauts named Tom, neither were Majors and both returned home safely. Bowie's creation of Major Tom may have been influenced by drugs and Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey."
As for your curiosity about what's out there? "The truth is out there" - Fox Mulder
Isnt this song based of a true event? not saying its based on a guy named major tom but my dad says that its david bowie wrote it as a tribute to a guy who died in space doese anyone know if thats true and more about it?
@nintendork2001 I am not positive who wrote the original but it probably was NOT David Bowie. It was originally performed by Peter Schilling and was originally performed in German - the language it was written in. It was received well and was translated into Englis and recorded in English.
Major Tom, a captian on a space ship, around the year 2100, is on a mission in space. He Thinks about the outcome of this mission. All of a sudden the ship is failing to work properly, And Ground Control is trying to make Contact with Major Tom. Meanwhile, all Crew Members are Dead, and Major Tom is on an edge of this futuristic Spacecraft, looking down at earth, and reflecting on his entire existence. Ground Control thinks Major Tom, along with the rest of the crew, have all died. He's Alive.
One time my friend was sitting in the room, and I heard this song playing. So I said "I haven't heard this in so long!" She looked at me like I was crazy. Well apparently there was no song playing, I'm just crazy xD But i still LOVE this song.
WOW! Hell Yeah! Love Shiny Toy Guns! Listening to a lot of STG, Hey You!, Sleigh Bells, Paramore, and No Doubt!. We need more rockin' girls in 2011 !!!!!...

It's called the Lunar Excursion Module, or LEM for short. It's a secondary spacecraft built for landing on the moon. The Command Module, or CM stays in orbit of the moon, while the "ground" team conducts experiments, collects samples, and goofs around in the low-gravity environment.
o-o this song kinda creeps me out, lol. I watched the song by david bowie space oddity. He goes "Can you hear me major tom?" Though I dont get major tom. >.<
@er0723 The song Major Tom (Coming Home) is somewhat based on the character in Space Oddity even though it was written in the 80s their are lots of songs based on this character of David Bowie's (including Ashes to Ashes)
@MLBuckProductions LEM Lunar Excursion Module. It's what the astronauts landed on the moon with. Apollo 13 was able to survive by abandoning the main capsule for the LEM. They had to cut it loose before re-entry.
@MLBuckProductions It's actually the landing craft designed for the moon landing ('Lunar-Excursion-Module'). I understand that Major Tom uses it to get home to earth. Bye the way great song :) and great ad by US manufacturer Lincoln!
I like this version and the Schilling version. I get a completely different feel from each of them - Schilling's, to me, is more wistful, almost sad, like there is no homecoming and something is lost. Whereas this feels as though something amazing, wonderful, beyond comprehension is happening - futuristic in the true sense. And I adore both versions, for totally different reasons.
I do not understand what people hear/see in this genre of music. Now I'm not trying to make fun of anyone or anything but this genre just desnt light the kind of fire that nu metal and most genres of rock do
@MrVgmaster It's subjective. I like this song in particular because it's smooth, good rhythm, lyrics, and has a nice mix of guitars and synthesizers. I like this genre, as well as a bit more in the electronica direction, because of the flexibility and diversity of synthesizers over your fairly stock base combination of guitar+bass+drums used in straight rock and metal.

Lol. I love Bowie's original, as well as Peter Shilling's version, but I love this more. It has more feeling, and really convinces you. Ahh, it gives me chills.
Also, I heard on the radio one day; a guy, calling this radio-station, right? His name was Tom, and his call got disconnected or something, but they said, "CALLING, CALLING MAJOR TOM!" Lmfao. <3
@orangebluemango I know that. Many people keep taking this song in a complete literal sense but if you think about the artist and his history with drug use, you can make a clear connection of how this song can correlate to getting a high.
I don't like the Peter Schilling version :P
MrFloopy99 3 days ago
Shitty rendition. Her voice is way too processed and her voice is just to generic. Just sounds like she's raising her voice. Not really singing.
Until a TALENTED female vocalist does a better version, the original Major Tom by Peter Schilling will be the best one.
