  • ALL acting is so lame! I can get every emotion on a dime... watch out!!

  • I've so far seen 3 versions of this scene and I must say, this is the most convincing one I've ever seen. Leave it to the legends to portray such a scene so perfectly!

  • "I LOVE IT!" LMAO

  • Utterly amazing.

  • I respect Laura Benanti's deeper resonance and performance, but I do perosnally like Cynthia Gibb's performance better. Of course, I sat through that whole movie to watch her develop in that role, a moment of this play doesn't do justice to the character.

  • My favorite scene! Thanks for posting!

  • THAT was INTENSE!

  • wow.....wow.....woooooooaaahhhhh

    shes good

  • Laura really comands this seen, though she's a lot bitcher than other louises ive seen.

  • I'm sorry but Laura is laughably over the top and campy. She sounds like she is possessed by a demon! First of all...both of them talk too fast during this scene...they rush it and then try to make up for it by having an overly long dramatic pause after the fight. It just feels so over done and cheesy. They are both as subtle as a heart attack! Tammy Blanchard did this scene beautifully! And she did not have to sound like the Exorcist to get the point across either!

  • @Brathford I have to agree and I LOVE both these women...especially Patti. They both earned well-deserved Tony's for this performance. However......this scene (the most important int he show outside of Rose's Turn) was blown by allowing Laura to overact so melodramatically. It's jarring. An actor's intention does reach the last row. You don't have to scream like a banshee.

  • @Brathford

Well, it was supposed to be seen on a live stage, not on a video screen. The difference in medium makes a big difference. What seems over the top is magnified on a screen whereas you need something larger than life for it to register in a live theater. What's important is that the actors are conveying genuine emotions. Compare this to the Bette Midler version of the same scene, the TV movie version seems bland and sitcom-y in comparison.

  • @kornpone See my response above.

  • @Brathford study some of the tchniques of theatre!

  • @futuresuperstar4life Ok in response to you and all the others below, I work in casting for Broadway. So my opinions are hardly from some theater lover who does not have an objective eye. I do this for a living...so I am pretty well qualified to say that Patti and Laura both overacted the shot out of this, EVEN FOR THE THEATER! And the whole, "It's on film so it looks sillier than it was live." argument, does not hold water. I saw it live too...and it sucked then too. Period.

  • @Brathford Well of course we know that someone working in casting must be the utlimate arbiters of taste in matters of theater (certainly above the paying audience and theater critics). And while I admit that the scene could have been toned down in terms of impact, I still hold that the genuine raw emotions displayed here beats the synthetic repressed performances we see in most commercial pursuits. And the late Arthur Laurents seemed to think so as well.

  • RIP Arthur Laurents. The genius behind this production and Gypsy!!!

  • Crying here.

  • A) Good thing you weren't seen recording this

    B) I wish I had the Judi Densch recording - I'd trade a limb for a recording of this show.

  • @alicia92960 ditto

  • 11,071 views and no thumbs down. Smart crowd.

  • Omigosh both of these women just gave me goosebumps! I love that this live theatre can to you:)

  • holy shit laura is ferocious! amazing performance chills up my spine!

  • Wow...

  • These two women are sensational and I can't wait to see them together again in Women on the Verge! ^^

  • STOP RECORDING THIS VIDEO! WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?!

    Haha : )

  • I hate the way there is no backdrop and the stage is very bare

  • If anyone wants a copy of this show on dvd with a autographed playbill of Gypsy, signed by Patti LuPone, Laura Benanti and Boyd Gained. Hit me up on my aim xoalxscrzox , im looking to trade both those items for the Judi Dench cast recording of A Little Night Music

  • Damn Laura Benati is amazing, who wouldn't love to do a scene where they get tell of a major diva (not in the good way)?!?! This is incredible!

  • The most electrifying two performances I have ever witnessed in the theatre.

  • Help me out here. What is Patti's line at 2:49? It sounds like she says "Beautiful lesbian speaks lousy french and reads book reviews." For some reason I don't think that's right. I don't trust Patti's diction. Maybe it's "Beauty burlesque queen"? Someone throw me a bone on this one.

  • @milesfile77 She says ... "You, the burlesque queen, that speaks lousy French and reads book reviews.." Ms. LuPone's diction is amazing. Illegally recorded videos from the mezzanine are not to blame for any misunderstanding of her performance. Who do you think you are?

  • AHAHAHAHA LAURA IS THE SHIT SHE TOTALLY SHOWS UP LUPONE

  • I sort of wish Patti wouldn't play every character like she's Evita. I'm sorry, I don't want to come off trollish, but...I'm kind of tired of that same schtick...

That being said, Laura Benanti is fabulous here.

  • i would give anything to play Louise just to do this scene, if nothing else :D

  • amazing performances

  • this is the way this scene should always be performed! Perfection.

  • that was intense.

  • Thank god Patti didn't catch you recording this!

  • @Capricaquarius89 WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE. HOW DAAAAAAAAAAAARE YOU.

  • Laura Benanti, omg, amazing acting!

  • This was, for me, one of the best acted shows I've seen on Broadway!

  • @Mattbrain I totally agree. The performances from LuPone, Benanti, and Gaines were all well-deserving of Tonys. The supporting cast was incredible as well. Such a glorious memory!

  • yeah, it seemed like this was from the beginning. as good as this is, they brought this scene to a whole new level by the end of the run

  • Laura's actually shaking. What a performer.

  • god was is patti so talented is amazing

  • What does Laura yell at 2:57?

  • @bodes08 "I said 'Turn it off!'"

  • "I said turn it off!"

  • Ohhhh...Patti's a diva biatch...I luv luv luv her!!

  • Well no wonder she was the first to win the Tony...every other Rose Lee was too nice during the scene

  • Actually Angela Lansbury won an tony for the Role of Rose in 1974 and Tyne Daly won in 1989.

  • I was talking about Gypsy

  • does anyone have this full show??

  • I do...send me a message.

  • very intense...

    it gave me chills too...

you could even hear people in the audience gasping...

imagine it when you're in the audience...

  • Sorry I don't know if this was early in the run. Laura Benanti is such a great actress, she gave me chills when I saw this

  • @alxscrz

  • when was this from? Was it earlier? It's amazing how far they came by the end of the run.

  • If I'm correct, this is from March 25, 2008.

  • Wow.
