There are exceptions of course, Iraq, Pakistan, Egypt, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sierra Leone etc. , but for the most par,t former Bristish colonies are well off. Yes, they tried to be many times but on every occasion they were thwarted by the British, usually in the form of the Royal Navy. France never had an Empire remotely the size of Britain and we see the legacy of that even today with the world's most internationally spoken language being English.
