I realize, that Track and Field back then was seeing these stars on drugs. Ashford was tested time and time again, and she was always clean. I still believe, that she ran
without the aid of any enhancers, and I loved watching her kick the East German women sprinters butt every time. It was sad seeing her pull up with an injury in 1983.
She would have been the World Champion in the 100m, and possibly at least a Silver Medallist in the 200m.
Wonderful Evelyn Ashford. DESTROYING both Marlies Gohr and Marita Koch over 100m and 200m respectively. My favourtite sprinter of all-time. Shame the U.S.A missed the Moscow 1980 Olympics.

@rucken123 I want too to see this race that you speak but I don't find. Ashford beat Gohr with 11.02 against 11.13 for the east German girl ( 11.10 Cathy Smallwood ), and 22.18 on the 200m against 22.31 for Kratochvilova, Wockel third with 22.41. Please tell me if you find her and I also !
@BOOMSLANG85 Hi you can see the 100 metre race that you refer to from 1981 if you look at the posting called "Kathy Cook Career Highlights" but I haven't seen any postings for the 200 metres from the World Cup of that year. Best Of Luck.
@rucken123 . Thanks. There is a moment I watched the posting you recommended me, but I don't remember there is the world cup 100m women's. Thanks, and it's a pity for the 200m :-(
...I was a big fan of Kathy Cook.....not as good as the USA or eastern european runners but she always picked up medals in either 100, 200, 400 or the relays...much under-rated...
Absolutely, Ashford was the Eastern bloc countries' kryptonite. I still miss; however, the friendly and healthy rivalry between Ashford and Gohr with their battles royal in the 100m which began in 1977 and culminated in 1988 with Ashford blazing past Gohr in the final meters of the w4x1 at the Seoul Olympics. Classic. I think that everyone will aqree that the GDR women were and still are the best in the short relay. I'm still in awe of their drug-assisted 41.37 from '85, 25 years ago.!
Actually their (battles) rival began in 1976 in the Olympic final in Montreal; Evelyn was 5th in 11.24 and Marlies was 8th in 11.34. Quite a leap to 10.88 the next year for Marlies.
Absolutely. Everone now knows that the GDR athletes and most of the Eastern bloc countries' athletes were all on steroids, no question. But, Ashford and Gohr still had a healthy, respectful rivalry. I truly miss those days. it's becoming more and more difficult for me to respect and enjoy athletics of any sort today because far too many have cheated and gotten away with utilizing performance enhancing drugs in their daily regimens.
ashford was a much bigger natural talent than any of the east german sprinters. that being said im not saying ashford didnt use drugs. but the east german women really pushed the drug use and often started using at a much earlier age than in other countries. runners like goehr..she wouldnt even be close to running sub 11 times without systematic drug use.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Perhaps. I'd say that was true of most east german sprinters bar Marita Koch. Drugs or not drugs Koch was an exceptionally talented athlete at 16. Gohr was maybe slightly above average. I think in a straight 100 meter fight Ashford would beat Gohr every time. Only a couple of times Ashford lost to Gohr. But as for Ashford vs Koch at 200 that's a tricky one. Too close to call

this 1979 event was where the tide started 2 turn against the GDR. They absolutely dominated women's sprinting in the 1970s (and we know why).
