Hey, I was wondering how you get a sign name? I know a deaf person has to give it to you, but is that it? Because someone told me that it has to be approved by the deaf community. Hey, I just want to let you know that you're very inspiring- because of you, I realized I should prooooooooobably get involved in the deaf community soon. :P (I start my classes for my interpreter's license this fall.) I went to the assisted llving place in my town today, and while the woman in charge of deaf programs wasn't available, I impressed fer friend/coworker enough for her to give me the first woman's email address. If people are interpreting the same song into the same language, barring the occassional regional sign influence, wouldn't there be a large amount of overlap?

Not saying it is copying but if the language and emotions are the same, isn't it going to look remarkably similar?

What would be the difference between two people saying something in ASL and in English?

^If you write the same question in English that I did, are you copying me or simply asking the same question?

You're asking very logical questions, but the answer is a little complicated.There are many different ways to sign the same concept. That's why one of the ways you get better in ASL is by asking how *else* to sign something. Often the better you are, the less like English your translation looks. Your grammar is ASL grammar and you don't get caught up in parsing it all word-for-word. You tell a visual story. There's also a huge amount of creativity involved in choosing signs. Hope this helps!

Scott, I feel so silly answering, because I am hardly an expert, but if you watch about a bizillion interpreted songs, you eventually notice that there are LOTS of differences between interpretations, largely due to the skill, personality, level of ASL, creativity, sign selection, region, etc. Yes, there will be overlap for some signs. But less than you'd think!

So, the "overlap" is often minimal unless it is pure SEE (signed exact English, in English word order). With PSE and real ASL, you're going to see some wonderfully different interpretations that dazzle you, intrigue you, and make you amazed. That's been my experience anyway, and I am a self-confessed ASL song junkie!
