  • Hey good man

  • too fast but other than that pretty good

  • Wtf you play the tappings so fast you make the thing more difficult as it is

    But great technic :)

  • mmmmmm .... mal

  • holy crap you sped up so much at 1:10, way to fast man crazy aye. Calm down, this song has rhythym and emotion to it, thus SLOW DOWN,

  • and thus caused a sonic boom.

  • like speeding through sex......bad idea.

  • very good intro. HOLY SHIT dat speed. lol.

    good cover

  • it kinda bugs me that you even thought that it sounded good at that speed. I mean, can you fucking hear?

  • slow the fuck down

  • nerds at church

  • Some of the lower strings are out of tune

  • holy shit

this is faster than a beaver firefighter

  • you r good, but you speed up too much

  • varying tempos but nice

  • Way to fast...

  • WHOA THERE BESSY.

Seriously friggen fast. I'm just gonna assume that was nerves. Dang man, kinda actually impressed you totally kept up with it at that tempo.

Good job over all especially when you slowed it back down.

Oh and very nice sounding guitar.

  • amazing

  • shitty

  • a bit too fast, but still is amazing in every way :DD

  • This was pretty fast xD But a cool cover !

  • wow

  • goin a little fast there haha. but its good you got the song down.

  • Damn good song, you have all the technique and skill there, you just need to slow it down a little bit and get your timing a little bit better. But other then your timing good effort (Y)

  • wow that was freaking amazing.

  • the best thing about this genre is that you can improvise as much as you want and it will sound good...you can put a lot of feeling. Very nice cover man! John Butler is one of my guitar heroes I even wrote a song that goes as a tribute to him. I'll post it as a vid response, hope you'll approve it.

  • very good job

  • Way to fast man!

  • fella's a genius. well done mate. really fantastic

  • too bad its a bit off :( very well played though! :D

  • where u get tabs? u play it very very good haha! keep it up

  • I liked the spin you put on it. Keeping the same basic structure but adding your own flair was nice. Only thing I would say is to make sure you keep time and rhythm a little more consistant. High e strings sound a little out of tune. I really, really, enjoyed this cover. Great job, good playing, and keep it up!

  • Best Cover Ever: Got Shivers

  • u playing that at church???

  • i like how you made it your own

  • haha, the woman at the begining is like "OH SHIT! LETS GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE." with her baby

  • @keatross thought the same XD

  • SLOOOOOOOOW DOWN !!!

  • this is what ocean i about no one is eva gonna get as john butler gets it so y not put ur own induvidual spin on it

  • nice playing! have your head of band called russian circles? the guitarist does some cool tapping too.

  • this was awsome, you are really good. and this song is great. you are great

  • very cool but the fast part with the hammer ons is way too fast, you should keep to the foot tapping, but yeah apart from the light speed hammer ons it was awsome lol

  • i love how you hell get into it great playin

  • Amazing stuff man!! I've seen that no one could perform a perfect cover, but still AMAZING!!!

    Keep it up!!

    :)

  • Actually i don't care that it maybe didn't perfectly sound like John Butler, but he isn't John Butler , anyway i Enjoyed watching / listening to your play - you did a grate job there... Keep it on and some day maybe we will say about someones cover that he didn't sound like you =)

  • boss

  • way to be.....that guy is an asshole. check out my version maybe? its called "for dad"

  • amazing cover

  • i think u played good :) a lot better than i would so :P but still some part are to fast but its awesome :D keep up the good work

  • Lay off the guy.. why are u talking shit because hes playing a song he likes ??? its never gonna sound like johns so give it up and get a life.

  • I'm not saying it's perfect, but your comment is not constructive criticism in any way, its just an exaggeration.

  • @poncho8615 dude awesome that u can play this

  • At least try to put your own spin on it. If that's too much, pay attention to time signature, you're not keeping a beat for more than 5 second bursts.

  • he put a ton of his own spin on it!

  • i agree sometimes the timing gets stretched to fit fast bits in but its definately got its on spin, the strumming is much more poppy than the fast down beat normally used

  • hey why play that in a church ?!

  • Why not? It's a very inspirational song.

  • Lovely song

  • ya know what I love about this song? everytime Ive heard it (I saw John play it live about 2 years ago and have seen various covers) whoever plays it makes it their own and you certainly demonstrated that =) awesome cover, I love it!

  • good job man, a little fast in some spots but nothing major, ive been trying to learn this for awhile and you blow me out of the water, props

  • is a fucking shit man my god !!! :S

  • Was this at 'House on the Rock' Church in PA near wingap?

  • i like it, not only because i like the original, but i now how hard it is to play like that if you have no experience...so keep rocking and the church is the best location for such songs...and im no christian even if my name is the same

  • who cares if its faster its still really good

  • i think he christianized the song

  • what does that mean?

  • @awatkins249108 a.k.a. made it super gay

  • C-A-L-M D-O-W-N

  • I'm not sure I get this comment. Could you explain?

  • You sped it up too much, imo.

  • @poncho8615 he means that this guy is playing this too fast and needs too feel it more than play the actual notes. he should have worked on it and got the timing down and this would have actually amussing

  • @poncho8615 it sound perfect to me, but yes you speeded up some parts :)

  • @poncho8615 I think its because your going a little fast.

  • @poncho8615 At one point he is crucified during the song, then resurrected, and then has his followers wait 2000 years until he is ready to return.

  • I'd go to church if there was John Butler music there :P

  • in my opinion the upbeat part is way to fast.

  • was this done during a church service?

  • yes, why?

  • the intricate finger picking and pulloffs and hammer-ons dont sound like anything at that speed even if you were executing it perfectly. i agree that it was too fast. you dont leave space for people to hear the beauty homes

  • lol wow dude alot of parts are rong and the fast part is rong and way to fast

  • thats why its a cover. its my interpretation.

  • v.good... but the speed kinda ruined the vibes of the song..

    just an opinion

  • you played it better than i've ever been able to, good job! Still my favourite song to play though.

  • Was this done at 'House on the Rock' in PA? It sure looks like my church...

  • It's got nothing on Butler's versions, but this is one of the best versions I've heard that isn't note-for-note the original. Awesome!

  • can u do a tutorial. sounded great. fake nails or not. it would be great if u could do a tutorial. also what kind of guitar are you using?

  • yeah, really nice. liked you cover, also not bad that you are playing this song with a pic. well i dont like your climax part but still good job. and i musst agree that you are playing some parts incredible fast :D

  • HE DID IT FASTER!!!!!!!!!!! (O.O)

  • just trying to help you out

  • no picks...gotta use your hands

  • you need a more appreciative crowd...that was really good

  • great cover.. you play in the church?? very funny;)

  • it's pretty cool actually.

  • Really well done, and not an easy cover by all means. Kudos.

  • very nice.

  • thats the best cover of it i have ever seen good for u man

  • Great cover dude! :)

  • hey man i was wondering if you could send that tab of your cover for ocean to me please, great cover man awesome work well done!!

  • I was impressed up until 1:14 where you seem to lose all track of tempo and rhythm, maybe it was nerves?

  • @wbraun88 I don't think he lost track of tempo neither rhythm. I'm almost certain that he just changed it to his liking. at 1:14, all he did was change the tempo of the song.

  • Awesome cover but they didn't seem to enjoy it very much =(

  • they just got no idea of what a masterpiece of music they are listen to.... so their bad^^ ...

  • it looked like when u were tensing up you started messing up a little bit, but when u were relaxed everything flowed, just play more shows and it will all come together, pretty good man

  • This is the best Cover of Ocean I've seen. Keep up the good work.

  • Yo man, dont worry about all these ignorant cunts saying that playing Ocean in a church is pointless. Its a savage cover, and personally I think using a guitar pic makes it more electrifying, great cover

  • I can't believe these guys on youtube, I don't know how they were raised but it must have been freakin weird, how cares if he's playin in a church or in his bedroom(n at least he enjoyed an awesome sound

And playing with a pick? Well it sure changes but the resul is definetely here, because for me it's the best cover of "Ocean" and for all who critisize, just do it and post your video, you will see what it is to be easily critisize by people who don't have a clue of what they're talking about

  • you understand jb's fingernails are like 2 inches long so thats basically playing with a pick...good cover but odd song for a church alltogether

  • fair cover, but playing a john butler song in a church is crime

  • and playing it with a pick is a capitol offense.

    lol.

  • Why?

  • May I ask what is your reasoning behind that comment?

  • Not big deal its just coz he's a very atheist person like everyone with hippie roots, don't take it serious

  • how long did u take to play this and how long r u playing guitar?

  • Great effort mate, one of your high stings out a little out i think but i'm no one to talk about that as i've played loads of gigs with a string out! haha keep it going mate!

  • nice playing man

but i think the fast bit was a bit rushed

im learnig this song right now

but overall top job mate keep it up!!!!

  • hmm..... beginning was ok, but at 1:14... yeah... not so good, but however you are better than i am ;)

  • wow i bet that really livened up the mass! haha, awesome job

  • tuning suckedddd.... but all in all, a good performance

  • good stuff man that was awesome... I saw that you said it didn't take you to long to learn, do you have any tips on learning it? I'm working on it right now.

  • don't compare this version with JB's, it doesn't have to be the same!

    nice record, nice version!

  • Glad you're enjoying playing it but it's not very much like the real song. Your right hand is far to slow (just like mine :P) and therefore you play to fast with the left one. I think we have to grow long nails on the right hand, like Butler, to achive that speed and perform a good cover. Trying that without nails will destroy your fingertops. Tapping is good tough but then ther's not much flow or feeling for me, sorry mate

  • HOMFG your fast part is INCREDIBLY fast. like, wow. it was so cool it just blew me away. its the point im having most difficulties with because i was lazy in early learing and made up my own very simple bit and now i cant get out of it.

  • in a church ?? great! :p

  • well you just impressed the hell out of me...

  • not perfect?!ur kidding right?lets say i now have 2 favorite acoustic guitar players...xD

the fast part was just...WOW...keep up the awesome work...

  • It didn't take me too long to learn actually, but i was determined to learn it so i practiced nonstop all the time. Its a really addicting song to play once you get the feel for it.

  • tell me something, how long did you take to learn all the song? thats a great job man!

  • ...Actually, if you do want some constructive criticism, I'd suggest speeding up your strumming rate. It's quite slow compared to your fast parts. FASTER!!! Haha :^)

  • WOW your fast part is CRAZY FAST!!! Hahaha, how do you even handle that? Sure I could tell you to slow it down, but it's your song now my friend, play it how you want I say!

    Faster!!! FASTER!!!

  • I loved your interpretation of the song! How long did it take you to learn it? JB would be proud, regardless of the differences between the two versions :)

  • dude, u gotta slow down on the fast part and try picking the strings closer to the neck that way it sounds more metallic and closer to the way it sounds when jb plays it

  • In my opinion a cover is supposed to represent your own interpretation of the song and that is what I try to do when I play ocean. I agree that I did play the "fast part" a little faster than usual (partly because I was nervous) but playing with speed is how I love to play that part. So I will take the constructive criticism and work with it but this is just how I like to play the song so I think you all should know that.

  • Man great stuff! Just wanted to know if you're playing this on 12 string or a six string?

  • i don't really think it needs to be slowed down too much. It is definitely an incredible cover, congrats. the only thing i think is the bass on your guitar is too loud. so you couldn't hear the high notes at the fast part. i thought the speed was fine though. excellent finger work also!!! get that bass down and you'll be set.

  • did you have to do any excercises to build up finger strength/speed so you could play like this?

  • !!! you use a pick lol makes it sooo much harder than it has to be xD

  • I remove the octave G now and it does sound a lot better and thanks for the constructive criticism.

  • Oh, sorry the camera just zoomed in--yep it's a 12 string! :):)

  • nice going bro, but you got to take your octave G string out. Nice playing tho buddy.

  • Im not interested in whatever your doing but very good job :) i mean it.

  • Impressive left hand. Where did you learn this from? I would have stayed off the lower note strings in that last riff a little more, but it was still good.

  • HELL YEAH!

  • nice but too busy, use more rests. . . they make the music flow better when used correctly, and work on keeping even the fast parts flow with the same tempo as the rest of the song, try not to cram as many notes into a space as possible.. and when i play this song people like it when it is slow for a while then builds and then you show your mad skills ha, good work though keep it up

  • take a leaf out of your own book and cut down on the wank when commenting...

  • its called constructive criticism and he's absolutley correct

  • Idiot.... Is constructive criticism, which I honestly think would help this man out. He has the ability to play the song, he just needs to improve in the fast parts. Like jack said, he shouldn't cram in as many notes as possible during the fast parts.

  • this is really great man. 12 strings guitars own :)

    what tuning is it in?

how many times did it take to learn to play it so perfectly?

since when did u start guitar?

really good job, i'm a john butler fan and really it's a great cover

  • that was awesome man

  • Phenomenal man, absolutely great. I hope to play it that good someday!

  • amazing pick work man! That's one of the cleanist ocean covers i've heard! BadAss dude!

  • Thanks a lot man that means a lot to me.

  • this is incredible.

    [=

  • wicked sick man....where did you find the tabs you used?

  • this is way dope bro... thats really cool that you got to perform in a spiritual setting like that.. did you ever get guitar lessons or did you just learn off the internet.. cuz im having a really hard time learning to play off tabs haha

  • I have took guitar lessons, but this song I learned from a combination of ear and tabs, and some of it I just improvise. Keep working at it, once you get the feel of it its not too difficult.

  • hah nice rendition man...

never thought I'd see john butler in a church but I like it. what axe you rocking there?

  • Its a Alvarez-Yairi.

  • michael you are amazingggg!!!!

  • Sounded great! although i was hoping for his more traditional ending where he ends on one of those powerful chord sections.

  • I usually end it like John Butler does but for church I decided to tone it down a bit.

  • aammzzzinnngg mike :D
