What a lot of people forget about Sally Bowles (or they never knew in the first place) is that she is supposed to be a second rate singer. The problem is, it's difficult to make a musical with a singer who really is second rate! I think Judi Dench is superb in the role. Wish I'd been old enough to actually see her live!

Judi is an amazing actress and singer, she brings SO much life to Sally Bowles and the character isn't suposed to be perfect! If you think Judi isn't great listen to her singing Send In The Clowns, its incredible!! And watch the film Nine!

Do none of you saying that Judi Dench can't sing realise that the character of Sally Bowles is meant to be an amateur. She's not meant to be good. Liza Minnelli sung properly.. She was "too good" to be Sally Bowles. Judi Dench makes herself bad to suit the character.

@joniJEALOUSY I don't know. Think Minneli is a little flat now and then. This song is about personality, and most of the ladies who sang it gave it their all, whatever that all was. Richardson was particularly bad and good. Minneli defined it. But why not? Completely deserved. And of course we all love Judi Dench.

The proplem with ,say ,Liza Minnelli's Sally Bowles is that she is too good a singer.Sally HAS to sleep around to keep her job because she's not.This ,for me ,is a truer performance.

Personally, I've always much preferred JILL HAYWORTH'S Sally from the Original 1966 Broadway Production. I think Hayworth's Sally is a lot more SYMPATHETIC than Judi Dench's Sally, and is replete with an effortless *YOUTHFUL* CHARM that I don't find in Dench, who acts and sounds a little *TOO* JADED for my liking, although awesome in her own right.

I basically think Jill is better at balancing Sally's endearing qualities with her *DARKER* attributes, but of course that's my own affinity..

I prefer Judi Dench's Sally Bowles to Liza's version.

Judi oozed sexiness and was just so smokin' going across the stage.

Plus, the husky voice.......very erotic.

Now I love Liza Minelli but her Sally just didn't have the same appeal as Judi Dench's.

Very interesting observations. I for one felt like Judi Dench's Sally was the most "sophisticated" out of the lot - the one who oozed "refinement", and considered Jill Hayworth's Sally to be the "smokin'", more "erotic" one who "oozed sexiness". Of course, both Jill and Judi have distinctively HUSKY voices, and are BOTH effortlessly *CLASSY* albeit in VERY DIFFERENT WAYS. :)

Compared to Jill and Judi, however, Liza's Sally ends up looking like a TOMBOYISH *LITTLE GIRL*, as much as I LOVE Liza.

Dench is still fabulous and sexy no matter how old she is she can sing and dance with the best of them. She is known for her throaty voice that is what makes her stand out. she has one play after another lined up for 2009 and 2010. We love her we all go to London to see her.

If you managed to think about it for a moment you would realise the situation is the opposite, ie. X-Factor is a very low standard. Dench's singing here is so bad that she would even fail the first stage of that. If this was a 'nobody', everyone would be cringeing, but as it's arch luvvy Judi Dench, it's bloody marvellous, dahling, positively divine. What a load of rubbish.

You don't know what you're talking about - this is from a recording of a musical where she is playing a CHARACTER. That character is an untalented singer. What people are praising here isn't Dench's "singing" in the sense of X Factor singing, but her acting through song - she portrays the character incredibly, but you need to know about the musical and the character to appreciate what she's doing in this song. Nothing to do with being a luvvy.
