@bjr43 i believe a penny slug is a penny tied to a string so you can pull it out after you use it, thus getting things for free....

@bjr43 Penny slug - the singer used a washer or other piece of metal about the size of a penny in a gumball machine to trick it to give him gum! Heheh I might have done this as a kid, but it would have probably been about the size of a quarter :-)

@bjr43 It's a piece of metal the size and shape of a penny. It would be used to trick a vending machine (probably a gumball machine) into giving you whatever it was that it sold for a penny. Pretty useless these days when a penny isn't worth much, but back in the day you could get a gumball for a penny -or- for a penny slug if you felt like cheating & you had a penny slug.
