I like the personality Matt Lucas gives to the role, but Alun Armstrong looked the part more. Also, I think it differs in which songs you're looking for. Alun plays the slimy, vile, more blatantly evil and sociopathic parts better (dog eat dog; beggar at the feast), but Matt plays up the comedic and petty thief parts better.

I love how the chorus is having so much fun, rocking back and forth in "Master of the House"... This is one of the musicals that I really want to be in someday!

Personally I prefer Matt Lucas, I actually feel like he gets what he's saying, Alun Armstrong just seemed like he was lazily singing. I dunno...

I am not sure whether prefer Matt Lucas or Alun Armstrong, as they have both got very different styles, that both complement the character of thenardier very well. Though I think Matt gives it just that little bit more sinisterness.
