Hey Bro... I really enjoy your licks... awesome... they are even better than steve's ones... I hope u keep uploading more and more vids... regards from Colombia...
pardon my french, but GOD DAMN that looks like fun!!!!! fokken wicked job, dude!! I saw maiden back in the 80's, when they toured this album. I have never seen ANY musician with the energy and intensity of Steve Harris - not even Nugent. the show was in Hoffman Estates, IL -
you sound great with a pick, dont bag yourself because of it, i cant use a pick fast like you, its hard cause im finger player, anyways your tone is super treably. great job
Thanks, man. To be honest, this was an early video for me on youtube, and I was pre-emptively trying to avoid the trolls and hecklers. After two and a half year of doing this, I have found the trolls and hecklers come anyways, so fuck 'em.
I don't apologize for the pick any more. In fact, if some troll wants to rib on me for the pick, they find themselves banned. I am so sick of people's pick prejudices that I don't even bother engaging them any more.
@zodiakironfist If they give you shit about the pick, ask them to post their videos of them playing this better without a pick. That should shut them up. I used to play Maiden with a pick--took a lot of shit for that.
@zodiakironfist dude that's such a fucking coincidence, I also covered this song on my Rickenbacker 4001, check out my vids. I only saw your video now!!! And like IMaiden89 said, I'm a finger player, and when I play with a pick I SUCK!!! There's a video on my profile that shows it, I can't fucking keep time at all. :) So kudos for that!!
Wo oah! Anyone who says bass is easier to play than guitar obviously can't be including the type of awesome basslines you just played there! I am a guitarist, but kudos to that, awesome performance! :)
And Back To The Village is one of my all time fave Maiden songs! \m/
It sounds brilliant. A 1974. They last forever, these basses do. I prefer my Fender Precision when doing rock. I love the Ricky but its distinctive 'twang' when recording its sound often doesn't give me the bassy tone I'd like, wheras the P bass does. Nice to see another Iron Maiden fan. :)
Practise goes a long way mate. I could barely paly any Iron Maiden song but I can now play Aces High and Wrathchild, Run To The Hill etc. And that improvements only been over six weeks or something like that. Playing Iron Maiden songs WILL make you a better bassist
That was enormous! Sometimes I'm embarrassed to say that Back In The Village is my favorite track on the Powerslave (or almost favorite, it changes allways). But not anymore at least a few time thanks to you!
You remind me a lot of me. You like the same music, you have the exact bass I want, you like AE, and I have those shoes, too. Pick or fingers, it sounds great! Steve would give it a thumbs up, then he'd up the irons!
Only fanboys care about stuff like that. I use whatever sounds best, and if that means a pick, so be it. A few people can whine about it, but it isn't going to stop me, and it isn't going to stop anyone else from being entertained by it.
So if you don't like a pick used for Maiden, avoid my channel, but do not think you will change my opinion one iota...Maiden is music, not a technique.
yea this is an awsome cover, similarly to many others, i am very impressed at you skills with a pick, im hopeless with a pic lol, not too bad with my fingers, bt then im not a great bassist generally anyway lol bt i enjoy what i do =P.
but yea.. back to you =D great video, had to subscribe lol, especially because of the little licks and things you have added to your cover of number of the beast
insult compared to what?? The many masterful bass playing videos of yourself you've posted? Oh yeah you have offered yourself up for scrutiny exactly zero times, but feel qualified to rip on ZIF? Admitting you're a troll is the first step.
Dude, you rag on yourself for using a pick in the 'more info'. I listen to this over and over for the thumping great ring the pick gives. Awesome sound.
Dude u r fucking awesome. Iron Maiden is like my favourite band. This may sound gay but I can play all the guitar bass and drum solos on my midi keyboard. They sound just like it but you can actually play the real thing. Big thumbs up dude. Long Live Maiden!
kay i gotta admit this. Before i saw this i used to think bass was somewhat useless. I was like "haha bass covers how hard can that be" but youve proven me wrong. this sounds pretty fucking godly. sounds as hard as the guitar it self. you pwn. up the irons.
hey that's one of my favorite songs. Powerslave was the first CD I ever bought, and I still have it too! Also got Powerslave on record. If you lived near me we would have to jam, 'cos I can do the guitar riffs and solos for all this.
Absolutely fantastic! I've listened to all of your Maiden covers, and this one is my favorite. You seem to get a crisper bass sound when you play with the pick. Definitely the best bass player I've seen on youtube.
love your bass playing. also like your red cap. lol. i was reading some of your comments. and one of the comments was put that plectrum down your throwt and swallow it. when i use a plectrum my dad tells me off lol. but that guy who said that to you needs killing lol. he is a complete knob with a k. question though. where abouts did you get your rickenbacker from ? cos im 13 years old and i would like a bass like that. iv got some very good ones but yours is just smart. anyway you are cool.
Thanks....sorry it took so long to see your comment.
I bought my Rickenbacker used from the local music store back in 1987. Back then it was way easier to find a Rick. My suggestion would be to purchase one used as well. They maintain their sound for decades, and only cost about half as much used ($1000 or so)
Dude, nice Arch Enemy shirt. I have the same one, glad to see someone who loves thier music. And I agree, Powerslave was their best album, plus it's my favorite.
It is best to wear the special safety glasses or risk being immersed in my personal brand of silliness I apologize for the minutes of your life that you will not get back....LOL.
WOW. That was ssssoooooo BRILLIANT. One of the lesser played (but none the less excelent) records of Iron Maiden. And played on a Rickenbacker. Excelent. Keep it up. How did you learn to play that.
Just by ear....I've been playing badly by ear for years and years (badly because I add so much of myself to the tunes that there is no way you can call my bass-lines "covers" any more).
Steve Harris's finger attack is so harsh, it actually kinda makes sense to use a pick for this track. I'm partial to finger plucking myself, but your performance is nonetheless excellent.
I've always wondered what a Rickenbacker sounds like.
dude, this is probably my favorite video of yours, just ridiculous. and particularly your rush and iron maiden covers helped in pushing me to finally buy a rick bass, which i am very pleased with. keep beltin' em out man!
OK wow....ive watched ur videos and U R AMAZING AND MY NEW HERO!!!!! U SOUND AMAZING AND SO R UR SKILLS!!! and like the other guys said...I am going to practice like hell to get as good as u! U ROCK DUDE!! AND KEEP MAKING VIDS!!
Here's what you do...take thumb, stick it up your ass...that way your head has some company.
Take your anti-pick prejudice and your lack of knowledge of bass technique elsewhere. If you did your homework, you will find that I am no slouch with my fingers, either.
Man what a dickbag. Do you just go around youtube ripping on people, especially a guy like this who has more musical talent in the 2 fingers he uses to hold that pick than you do in your whole family tree.
I got an idea, instead of looking at him using a pick, LISTEN, since that is what music is about. Not to mention you manged to piss him off, and he seems like a super nice and humble guy(especially in light of his mad bass playing skills) from all of his posts of his I've read.
This commenter went around to a few of my videos, getting more insulting each time. Although this particular comment wasn't so bad, by the time I read a couple of others I was pretty irked. I get insulting comments about once a week, and refer to these types of commenters as "twit of the week" and reserve the right to respond in kind. Thanks for the defense, and the compliment.
i was about to shoot my head off with a Deagle ... but i saw ur video and was ENOUGH TO BLW MY FUKING HEAD COMPLETELLY! ... LIKE WITH A SHOTGUN! ... dude ur awesome!!!! UR A COMPLETE INSIPARTION TO ALL THE BASSst OUT THERE!!! UR GREAT!
wow..this is amazing...i play w/my fingers but regardless with how one plays, one still has to be good...
you are amazing...ignore all the other ignortant pricks who think bass only has to be w/fingers...i mean look at chris squire amazing bassist..still plays with a pick...good job though
A new one will cost you from $1800-2400, depending on the market you buy it from (Topeka, KS is cheaper than Los Angeles, CA.). But if I were you and interested in saving a little money.....I'd go used.....used Ricks are just as high quality as the new ones, but cost about half as much.
What is all this crap about what "real" bass players? After watching this video, there should be zero doubt in anyone's mind that 'zodiakironfist' is a real bassist. After all, a "real" bassist simply playes bass. Be it with fingers, pick, bow, or fricken' teeth. If it sounds good, it works. This dude jams!
I agree...if a bass player can play good bass with his butt hairs, I say good for him (although I wouldn't want to see it...LOL). Thanks for the vote of confidence.
I use a guitar recorder...it's a USB plug-in box that is a marvelous invention for at-home studio-ing. Look up "Fast Track" by M-Audio to see what I use.
If you are going to criticize random bass players on youtube for style and not substance, please understand that not all operate under the premise of copying their bass idols to the point of being a one-dimensional fanboy, thanks.
When I first started, there were just about as many bass players that played with a pick as played with their fingers. It made no difference. So I learned with a pick first, then moved on to other styles when I got into funk, etc. In my opinion, pick-playing has a unique sound and physics, and should not be discarded due to peer pressure, especially if said peers have nothing to say beyond sneering.
OMG ,if he play well this song with the pick and the sound is very good , where is the problem ?
zodiakironfist play 2 minutes to midnight very well with the fingers for example . this is for say that this user is a good bass player with his fingers and with the pic.
wow, i used to play this, the bass lines of Iron Maiden are amazing!
i don´t think that playing with a pick instead of fingers is bad, the sound is not same of Harris´s , but that´s not good or bad, it´s just a different style.
great job! left me with my jaw dropped. all these people talking about not playing with fingers can't play the song this good. so don't worry. awesome man!!! love your covers!
Just like to say good job for a start but its a well knwon fact steve harris holds his talent in his right hand anyone whos seen him play live will know this force yourself to play with fingers! Personally i use both whatever suits my mood :)
Very good playing! However, I do not remember Steve Harris ever playing with a pick. I admire the skill of playing an instrument well. However, I really admire those who write/create the music I love.
I certainly do not compare myself to Steve Harris, so do not worry. As for fingers vs. pick, I am a mere mortal, and can only play Maiden with the tools that I am capable of using. And for most Maiden, that means a pick.
I don't have a songbook because I play by ear. However, you can probably download a buttload of tabs for Maiden if you have PowerTab or GuitarPro. (Powertab can be obtaine for free). Both of those programs not only give you the tabs, but they play so you can play along with them. Best of luck.
great, love your tone man. That rick is gorgeous! Dont mind the guy with the finger/pick comment, you rock! I just did a video of me playing maidens powerslave, it would mean a lot if you checked it out :D
i wasnt sure if i should beginn playing the bass because i didnt really knew that you can play such great things on it now i only want to buy one and beginn rockin !!! YOU ROCK
Wow...thanks. \m/ I started playing bass because Nikki Sixx was the coolest guy in Motley Crue at the time, and so was Steve Harris (I was 13). To be honest, I didn't even know what a bass sounded like until I mowed lawns and bought one. In my opinion, the bass is the best instrument to play because you can choose to be more rhythm, or more with the guitars...your choice, but either way, you can always get a gig because bass players are more rare.
Ever hear of Chris Squire, Geezer Butler, Dave Ellefson, and Mike Watt?
The plectron gives its own sound and style, and a bass player who ignores that because some close-minded people might pick on them out of some pre-conceived notion as to what a bass player should be is limiting himself.
Now as far as me using one to play Maiden....that is what I do to ensure the beginning of the song as as solid as the end, and I make no apologies.
minus geezer, who a majority of the time fingerplucked. i personally think that picks are terrible things that greatly limits what a bass can do, but if all you're gonna do is strum away, it's a good tool. kudos for the song
I am not sure you are getting what I mean by Geez, which is a finger player who resorts to a pick for fast, punctate play occasionally (especially playing both styles in the same song). In that case, the pick is an added tool that makes the finger player more versatile than he would be without it. Look around my videos and you can see I rarely use a pick.
you have skill, and i just happened to stumble across this vid. i'm not really gonna go hunting for all your vids (altho i might check em out in the future). but all throughout the ozzy years of sabbath, i've only seen him finger plucking (emphatically, i might add)
Great sound!!! Wowww!!

Hi, I have a 2004 Midenight Blue Ricky Bass, is that a 4003 or a 4001? Is it custom painted?

It is a 4001 burgundyglo, made in 1974. As far as I know, it is the original paint, although I refinished it at one time (and badly I might add).

big difference between playing with fingers and playing with a pick.
Jeffro321 3 years ago
finger style rules! forget the fucking pick dude.
66612345678 4 years ago
Why limit myself?
zodiakironfist 4 years ago
playing with a pick gives a sharper tone than playing with fingers which yields a muffed tone.
you can vary when you master both.

You raped that song, in a good way!

If you can play Maiden with a pick, you are a dangerous man! NICE job, very impressed. Great sound by the way! 5 stars
OttoTheGarbageMan 4 years ago
Thank you very much. I take a lot of flak when I pull out the pick, but that is how I started, and it is still the fastest way I play.

how much it is a new rickenbacker in usa??you know?? ... i'm from argentina and i'm thinking to buy one there...thanks
bjrusso1987 4 years ago
A new one will cost you from $1800-2400, depending on the market you buy it from (Topeka, KS is cheaper than Los Angeles, CA.). But if I were you and interested in saving a little money.....I'd go used.....used Ricks are just as high quality as the new ones, but cost about half as much.

lets see it without a pick, beal bass players I believe use fingers.I know lets ask steave

TomUtter 4 years ago
I agree...if a bass player can play good bass with his butt hairs, I say good for him (although I wouldn't want to see it...LOL). Thanks for the vote of confidence.

great playing and tone. do you run that rick through stereo or just mono to one amp?
pbradfield 4 years ago
I use a guitar recorder...it's a USB plug-in box that is a marvelous invention for at-home studio-ing. Look up "Fast Track" by M-Audio to see what I use.

Volknor 4 years ago
If you are going to criticize random bass players on youtube for style and not substance, please understand that not all operate under the premise of copying their bass idols to the point of being a one-dimensional fanboy, thanks.
zodiakironfist 4 years ago
Well said,I'll have to remember this reply the next time someone unjustly criticizes me.
hoturtu87 4 years ago
When I first started, there were just about as many bass players that played with a pick as played with their fingers. It made no difference. So I learned with a pick first, then moved on to other styles when I got into funk, etc. In my opinion, pick-playing has a unique sound and physics, and should not be discarded due to peer pressure, especially if said peers have nothing to say beyond sneering.
zodiakironfist 4 years ago
hey fuck you stupid, it sounds really good
leave the basement
jpatty 4 years ago
OMG ,if he play well this song with the pick and the sound is very good , where is the problem ?
zodiakironfist play 2 minutes to midnight very well with the fingers for example . this is for say that this user is a good bass player with his fingers and with the pic.

Its idiots like Volknor that make people not want to post good music. Go cry to someone who cares what you have to say. (Your mother perhaps?)

globaloiltrader 4 years ago
wow, i used to play this, the bass lines of Iron Maiden are amazing!
i don´t think that playing with a pick instead of fingers is bad, the sound is not same of Harris´s , but that´s not good or bad, it´s just a different style.
i enjoyed the video, a lot.
(btw, great sound!)

great job! left me with my jaw dropped. all these people talking about not playing with fingers can't play the song this good. so don't worry. awesome man!!! love your covers!
david733 4 years ago
very nice job dude. Maiden, Ric, skill, way to go. what amp are you using and hows your eq set?
BassCruis8der 4 years ago
I use typiccal "V" patterning on my EQ and I typically play through a Peavey TNT150.
zodiakironfist 4 years ago
Just like to say good job for a start but its a well knwon fact steve harris holds his talent in his right hand anyone whos seen him play live will know this force yourself to play with fingers! Personally i use both whatever suits my mood :)
ueltaylor 4 years ago
Like I said, I am a mere mortal.
zodiakironfist 4 years ago
Very good playing! However, I do not remember Steve Harris ever playing with a pick. I admire the skill of playing an instrument well. However, I really admire those who write/create the music I love.
castpro 4 years ago
I certainly do not compare myself to Steve Harris, so do not worry. As for fingers vs. pick, I am a mere mortal, and can only play Maiden with the tools that I am capable of using. And for most Maiden, that means a pick.
zodiakironfist 4 years ago
Nice playing, I prefer playing with my fingers most of time though. Excellent song too.
Keskimaki 4 years ago
Nice bass, I wish I could afford one myself.
ripper6 4 years ago
Do you know if there's an Iron Maiden-songbook for bass or did you even use one? If there is one i would be happy if you'd tell its name to me.
Thx!
HlerLogiKari 4 years ago
I don't have a songbook because I play by ear. However, you can probably download a buttload of tabs for Maiden if you have PowerTab or GuitarPro. (Powertab can be obtaine for free). Both of those programs not only give you the tabs, but they play so you can play along with them. Best of luck.

great, love your tone man. That rick is gorgeous! Dont mind the guy with the finger/pick comment, you rock! I just did a video of me playing maidens powerslave, it would mean a lot if you checked it out :D
sicmick112 4 years ago
damn i like your kind of playin \m/
i wasnt sure if i should beginn playing the bass because i didnt really knew that you can play such great things on it now i only want to buy one and beginn rockin !!! YOU ROCK
Terrorbiber 4 years ago
Wow...thanks. \m/ I started playing bass because Nikki Sixx was the coolest guy in Motley Crue at the time, and so was Steve Harris (I was 13). To be honest, I didn't even know what a bass sounded like until I mowed lawns and bought one. In my opinion, the bass is the best instrument to play because you can choose to be more rhythm, or more with the guitars...your choice, but either way, you can always get a gig because bass players are more rare.
zodiakironfist 4 years ago
so true one of my friends dad said there are a million guitar players but a few thousand bass players lol and there is some truth to that
travman102 4 years ago
you forgot lemmy :), good job tho!

a real bassist plays with his fingers
warpedindustry123 4 years ago
Ever hear of Chris Squire, Geezer Butler, Dave Ellefson, and Mike Watt?
The plectron gives its own sound and style, and a bass player who ignores that because some close-minded people might pick on them out of some pre-conceived notion as to what a bass player should be is limiting himself.
Now as far as me using one to play Maiden....that is what I do to ensure the beginning of the song as as solid as the end, and I make no apologies.
zodiakironfist 4 years ago
minus geezer, who a majority of the time fingerplucked. i personally think that picks are terrible things that greatly limits what a bass can do, but if all you're gonna do is strum away, it's a good tool. kudos for the song
tyleral45 4 years ago
I am not sure you are getting what I mean by Geez, which is a finger player who resorts to a pick for fast, punctate play occasionally (especially playing both styles in the same song). In that case, the pick is an added tool that makes the finger player more versatile than he would be without it. Look around my videos and you can see I rarely use a pick.
zodiakironfist 4 years ago
you have skill, and i just happened to stumble across this vid. i'm not really gonna go hunting for all your vids (altho i might check em out in the future). but all throughout the ozzy years of sabbath, i've only seen him finger plucking (emphatically, i might add)
