I think people have a natural need for an absolute freedom that can be achieved only by acting spontaneously without submission to any rules. This is the main source of our spirituality and art, but maybe also a reason why people like games such as Second Life or to create alter-egos on YouTube etc. It's a chance to put a little bit of yourself away for a while, but not for too long. A kind of quasi-Zen of the 21st century.

I played it for awhile but after having guys with dildo's strapped to them come up to me trying to act cool and seeing so many sex couch's, bed's, etc..that I couldn't sit on because of God knows what.....I realized it wasn't for me. My friend had a guy get angry because she didn't fall in the love with his real life persona which was completely different from his SL persona. Fun for some, not for me!
SecondLife has many purposes. It's primarily a social network which utilizes an in game world, and avatars. Instead of just chatting in a chat room or talking to people on facebook, you can go to a club. There's also fighting places, places to roleplay, lots of random stuff, movies, tv shows.. lots of stuff.
RL has better gfx. Photoreallistic gfxs some might say. I think I am going to open a business irl and play it all day long... It's sounds like such an emersing experience O_O

Really, I think the problem is calling it a game, which it is not. It is a virtual world. Calling it a game brings a certain expectation, which you will not get unless you happen to come across 1 of the 1000s of rpgs or combat sims in SL.
HaHa, I guess it is hard to understand something that has no objective. Most people would rather just be lead down a path with a certain objective. In SL, you make up your own objective. Whether it is being creative, or social, or game oriented, or entrepenuer, these are all possible in sl with many more subsets. Give it a try.

I'm using 2nd life for 2 years now and there's one thing I can tell you in wich it helped me a lot.
It is.... tadaa: I can understand you! I had english in school but I learned much more english by using it in sl than in school. There's a chance to talk to native speakers from other countries. That's one cool thing. Others are if you like 3D editing, sl is an easy entrance to such techniques.
Last: I made about 6k€ through sl in 2 years. Not bad for a hobby, right?
ect and its just better than chat rooms you can just recreate yourself and be whom ever you want meet people and yeah it is a lot like the sims but in mmorp format so its like sims with other people ...

Yeah, I play Second Life (SL). I love to use it to build fun things, and to customize. I could spend hours on customizing my avatar, how sad is that? The graphics are improving over time. Oh, and I usually use SL as a way to keep in touch with my friends and family in a fun way! =)
I play and love Sims 2. I prefer the real folk in SL, though. I don't consider SL my "second life". I just consider it a fun game/learning experience. I'd say more, but I wanna go play that game now. Toodles!
The difference between second life and the sims is that in 2nd life u play over the internet and can chat with other ppl, but I prefer sims, cant wait for the sims3 to launch :D
I also tried Second Life, I went in, hung around for a bit. I decided it was a place for posers, where you can dress up and stand around and show off your virtual clothing or house. I did find a few neat things, like a faerie garden for example. But after a couple days of going there, I lost interest. All I ever saw was posers.. not interesting to me. Maybe I don't get it either?

why do you connect with people online via youtube?...what is the purpose?...probably doing it for some reason, right?...well second life allows people to connect in a different way...a 3d immersive kind of way...and as mentioned above...it's not for everyone...just like youtube is not for everyone...
important is that we have tools like sl and youtube which allow people to connect...bc there are bigger issues than "the medium" which need to be "ranted about"...

Second Life makes more sense if you don't look at it like a game. It contains many games. It's a 3D platform that can people build whatever they want on, much like the web is a platform for web pages. What is the point of the web? In a way you can say the web is a "second life" for many people.

Hey Emily! Ya, I agree with you. I can't understand the hype about Second Life, but I just don't have the time to put in it anyway, but I still don't see the point in it. The Sims was a different story though, because The Sims was actually fun. It's the same idea but different, yeah I definitely understand what you're trying to say.
American Idol, wow... I would watch American Idol every so often, but I just wouldn't keep up with what's going on anymore. It's funny to see the rejects though. =P

Second life is not a video game, in the sence that there is no goal to achive and it doesn't have a start and an end like all games do, it's an online virtual community thats all it is!it has been out 5-6 years now and yeah it has the same points as every other online communities have (myspace, facebook, hi5 etc).

Yeah, I play Second Life (SL). I love to use it to build fun things, and to customize. I could spend hours on customizing my avatar, how sad is that? The graphics are improving over time. Oh, and I usually use SL as a way to keep in touch with my friends and family in a fun way! =)
I play and love Sims 2. I prefer the real folk in SL, though. I don't consider SL my "second life". I just consider it a fun game/learning experience. I'd say more, but I wanna go play that game now. Toodles!

I also tried Second Life, I went in, hung around for a bit. I decided it was a place for posers, where you can dress up and stand around and show off your virtual clothing or house. I did find a few neat things, like a faerie garden for example. But after a couple days of going there, I lost interest. All I ever saw was posers.. not interesting to me. Maybe I don't get it either?
