"With about 20 laps to go I was in serious gearbox trouble. I lost third and fifth gear at one point and just hooked it into sixth, which is all I used for the last seven laps. I saw Patrese coming for me and really didn't think I would make it. But I felt it was my duty to win here in Brazil, so I pushed the car regardless of the rain which began falling in the closing stages.." Ayrton Senna. No doubt the best one
Any race is hard if you want to beat Alain. You have to drive to your maximum efficiency in such a situation and, while I think today's race was easier than in Hungary, it was still hard work. The car's handling deteriorated because of the oil on the circuit, and I had to keep it consistent. Although I have to carry on the way I have been doing, I must agree that Alain is in a difficult position now for the drivers' world championship. Belgium 1989, Ayrton Senna.
your right but back then williams had the new semi automatic gear box. how ayrton held mansell off is just plain god given skill. then the only 6th gear for the remaining laps like you say how can anyone come close to such skill!
I always wanted to know which race it was where he had his gears stuck in 6th and like typical Senna made it the best race

Unlucky Nigel
But for the poor reliability at the start of the season, 1991 really should have been your first Championship....followed soon after by your second!

Senna always asks for the race to be stopped whenever he is #1... He does it here, he did it on the rain-soaked Adelaide GP too. Not fair at all.

@longde Actually that gesture was not to ask for the race to stop, that gesture was to sign that he had only one lap left.

Why wasn't the engine cover the Williams-Renault yellow as it usually was back in those days?

It's unbelievable to think that he managed to steer with only one hand for the last few laps whilst holding the gear-lever in place!!
Senna forever.

@ayrtonsenna1960 Senna overcame so much that year. In 16 races not a foot wrong. Best single season performance by any driver in F1 history
