Before someone gets themselves in deep poop.... Most alarm companies use infrared sensors and combination infrared and microwave dualtec's. I never seen ONE single sonic motion detector EVER being used on any alarm system I have serviced Please don't try to break into an area with motion detectors holding a bedsheet.  You'll be sorry and you will feel like an idiot . :-)

Light waves and sound waves are two completely different kind of phenomenon. Light is an electromagnetic wave and sound is mechanical. A black sheet would reflect this as just as easily. It has more to do with the material and shape.

i think the bed sheet only worked because it reflects the waves.

when i saw this i thought about this

the reason they place white rocks on top of buildings is because the white rocks reflect most of the suns waves cooling the building.

so the white bed sheet reflects most of the waves that would set off the sound waves.

Motion sensors work on the basis of echo. The motion sensor emits ultrasonic sound waves, meaning that humans cant hear them. When you step into the room, you reflect the sound waves, and then te motion sensor picks up this disturbance and sets off the alarm.

What you are talking about is light waves. Sound waves and light waves are different. Sound waves are vibrations of air particles, light is not. Since sound and light are two different waves, what you are saying is wrong.

hahaha magicmace3 you are totally confused between electromagnet waves and sound waves.

Electromagnetic waves like visible light, UV, X-ray, Microwave, IR, are not connected to sound waves. Sound waves are mechanical, physical, and they have a physical force, unlike EM waves.

The colour thing you talk about works only for all the lights with colours from the rainbow, but the soft sheet absorbs soundwaves easily. its nothing to do with colour. It would work with black sheet too.

@magicmace3 erm, the motion sensor works on the fact that it receives the reflected waves... if it receives them faster than before, that means there is something physical in front of it, so the alarm goes off... so if the bedsheets just absorb all of it, it won't know if there's anything there.

same as a stealth plane :D it has shapes/colours/materials that absorb the radio waves that are sent by RADAR's.... so if the radars don't get them back, they don't know something's there. (spaceRANout)

@magicmace3 that's true for light waves, but for sound waves it depends on how hard or soft the object is, which is why you can hear an echo in a dark cave but not, say, under a white blanket.

If it reflected the waves, the alarm would have gone off since it would have had the same effect as Kari walking in without the sheet.

@magicmace3 Well, color has no effect on the absorption of sound. The reason color affects light is that light is an electromagnetic wave.

More than likely, I think it's just that the sheet is a flat surface, so the sound waves bounce off it in a similar manner to the way they bounce of the wall.
