Animating Layers in Photoshop CS3 Extended

Great tutorial! I now understand animating in photoshop =3

I struggled with animating in photoshop and resorted to flash (which, is a nice programme and all but I didn't like the way it painted as it smoothed edges and if i unticked the smooth edges box it would look odd and horrible =C). Gonna go watch the next one =D <3 xxx

The convert to timeline command is greyed out if you dont have a file opened. Perhaps this is your problem :)

yeh you can animate like this. but im guessing the majority of people hwo came here to see this wanted to learn how to animate frame by frame like disney stuff. this dont really show u that. if i had a video screen recorder i'd make one. for now though all i can say is this video does kinda point u in the right direction. good luck

ahhh i wish i could show you where to look, unfortunately i haven't found squat...best thing to do is just trial and error, if you are familiar with flash try and think of photoshop in that layout, or better yet try and think of it as doing lightbox animation. each layer is your paper, you draw on it and next layer is your new paper, you can also change the layer underneath the new one to give a onion skin effect. it also helps to use groups(its the folder button on teh layer section)>>continued

continued>>to separate your animation into segments depending on what you want animated i.e. one group is for the body movement while second layer is for mouth movement or like hair. if you just want to animate hair on a still character you'd just draw character on one group and then draw hair animating on layers in another group. and then the eye's blinking in another group, you get the idea? its also good to animate in the timeline tab, not the frame by frame tab.>>>continued...again lol

>>from "continued again lol" now with that being said let me give you a lil heads up. from new file, select "film & video" preset. if you're in UK its DV PAL (this should automatically make screen ratio 720 x 576) i cant remember the widescreen ratio :( to bring up the animation timeline bar, click on window>animation. and it should be up there, make sure its in timeline mode(like the bar in the video). in the top right of that bar theres a arrow pointing down with like 3 line i think>>continued

continued>>click on that button and go to document settings and change the fps (frame per second) to 15 fps, will make your life easier lol. follwing the animation tip i gave you from before, once you wanna see your drawings in action, go to group 1 and select all the layers then click on the top right button again on the animation bar and select convert to frames. this will now order your animation in frame by frame and you can now see it in action. i think i'll let you guys find out the rest

thanks for your reply. i believe i found an even better solution to my problem.... after effects...... i thought the only way to save an animation made with after effects, is to save it as a movie (avi, mpeg.....). now i have seen that i can save my animation as numbered images, a image sequence. thats it. thats what i looked for. thanks again for your help..

people, i am kinda fed up with this - and i ask you: is there ANY way how to COPY and PASTE frames that i ALREADY done in there? maybe i am stupid or blind, but i didnt find it, not even in help of photoshop. all i did is that i made several frames animation on normal picture which i wanted to COPY AND PASTE so i dont have to do it all over again. when i convert it into frame animation, it shows me only ONE frame, so i dont freakin know where the hell am i making mistake.

lol...They both have the basic PS tools, but CS3 extended has extras, such as 3-D editing, but getting CS4 right now will make you be able to CREATE 3-D objects (please note:only CS4 Extended)

Adobe capitalized big time on popularity of their products. To make them popular (many people know them) they always make their antipiracy protection rather simple and weak. Actually...YES!...you can do 10000000000 additional things with After FX. That timeline in Photoshop is VERY basic...it's great though. But if you want to make REAL, complex animation, then you should get AE, or similar.
