I really want to configure my macbook pro to SSD, but very expensive, 512 GB is like $1200, and other than quick app launch & bootup, what does SSD offer? Damn, apple got very expensive internal component, like it's RAM also expensive, just wanna know why.
@lgrocvideos thats an option for antiglare display from apple, black is glossy one. i rather use an anti-glare protector to save the sleeky black bezel
@theopusfuller, kamaboko1 & johnmacward: bite your tongue next time you think about commenting on a video you know nothing about. If you do your research, SSD's are far superior to HDD's for more reasons than start-up times. Do your homework, little kiddies.
You should do a clean install of OS X, it probably places the OS files differently on the SSD for faster bootup. I know Windows allegedly does the same.
Apart from the apps at the end (and possibly the way they interact with the OS at startup) that's a pretty normal machine. For one thing fragmentation isn't a big deal with Unix filesystems (Or apple's filesystem) and possibly the OS is installed on a different partition from the /home directory. Also I notice they create a very simple (and neat) startup bootsplash (the logo and spinny thing) which should utilise resources better. 47 seconds isn't great, but it's not the worst out there either.

how the fuck did you install a 512gb ssd in the mbp. do you know how to fucking solder??? Either way, that is like ~$1649. I heard the samsung drives have faster read/write speeds. This is why I would rather not have the default toshiba ssd in a mbp. Why not custom install a 1TB ssd, if you have the cash for the 512gb??? Toshiba manufactures them also, but I would still prefer a samsung...
The 512 GB drive is ~$1800 on Amazon... so buyer beware. That said, my 256GB SSD is nearly full... As to the speed - my 17" MBP with the CPU upgrade and 8GB mem - boots in ~15 seconds.
Thanks a lot for uploading this video. I am seriously considering the upgrade. Do you have any statistics on battery consumption? How much longer does the battery last with the SSD vs 7200 RPM drive?
Why are peole so fascinated with boot and shutoff times? God, that's like comparing how fast two different cars startup and turn off. Totally useless performance information. I rarely turn my computer off, and that includes laptops.
you've only got about 40GB woth of stuff on your mac, why did you not just get a 128GB SSD. I did its kick ass and if I need any extra room I have a WD 500GB passport =)
i get what u r saying, but people watch them just to se how fast the computer is. for example, i make movies in final cut, and i always have to render my vids. and if your computer is slow, rendering takes forever.
@mitch625 Then show the real world test. Booting up and down is not really when I've to work with the Adobe MasterSuite etc. In fact I give two hoots about start up and shut down times.. You don't spend your whole day starting and shutting down your machine. Show some application performance tests that at least show the speed of those ssd drives!
@mitch625 Obviously TheOpusFuller doesn't understand the fact that applications are almost instant to start up! Even larger applications like Photoshop...
Please Please Please Please Please Please do a performance video of this! Like a video of how fast it is. A multitasking video, opening a lot of apps. Tell us if video editing is faster. If you do this, I will be a very happy person. Plus this should be interesting to others as well.
gd vid. i still havnt got a macbook pro but im getting the next generation whenever that comes out. Are SSD's worth the extra cash? ive heard there dead speedy but then i hear all these horror stories about them completely failing or gradually getting really slow. Is there any truth in these?
can i ask how you managed to get the old design 17" mac book pro because they dont make these any more. The new ones have the black frame round the screen i have one. this is what they use to look like.
No they don't. Matte displays are mainly for designers who don't want to be bothered by seeing their face and every object behind them reflecting off the screen. And LED matte displays look pretty nice.
I don't get it. My new Macbook Pro 17 3.06ghz 500gb 7200rpm boots up in exactly 28.4 seconds every time. Very very fast, and shuts down in 3 seconds. Why do you need that?
Final Cut Pro required a scratch disk so this faster ssd is ideal for real performing work. Im not bothered about the boot as its not exactly going to get the best score with the amount of apps ect on there.
Im more interested in the real performance gain when working.
The hard drive is just one factor which can speed up boot time, solid state drives are able to gather the resources to boot faster then the normal hard drive disk, although they are incredibly more expensive.
you can even make it faster. Download "snow leopard cache cleaner" and go to optimize tab. Select both "optimize ram" and "optimize files" (just these two). and run it. you will see a big difference. Don' run "maintain" or deep clean cache. for some reason they make ssd slow.
awesome speed of that ssd, i must ask, even though i have seen some in a few apple stores, is that a specific macbookpro model that has the silver screen surround rather than the black or what?
When you come to order your laptop (only available on the 15" & 17") you have the option to have a matte screen which by default means you have to have the silver bezel. Was this what you meant :)

Meh. They spoil the whole design.
And true designers/photographer wouldn't depend on just a 15/17-inch screen, now, would they? It's the laptop what counts, not just the screen.
Need a bigger, better, matte screen? Get a external one. But then again, that's only my point of view.
