its stupid how i hear that people from russia were complaing the the canadians got gold... Russia has won gold in pair figure skating from 1964 till 02, it would kill them to see another counrty win besides them, and about that crash jaime sale had with that russian dude i heard ppl saying she was only thinking about herself, well what was she supposed to do its a competition ppl aren't gunna play nice to get what they trained for so hard. Go Canadians<3
@zoraidaskates Yes, and based on the new judging system, Sonja Henie would not have won, nor would Dick Button, Peggy Fleming, or Brian Boitano. Should we now expunge their wins? Take back their gold medals? Skaters were judged by the standard at that time, and S and P lost by one judge, the judge who cut a deal so that the French ice dancers could win over the Russians. That is why there is a new judging system in case you don't remember that. Your logic is deeply flawed.

EVERBODY: -say a big HELLO to Ezrateach-the newest expert in the Sport; who leaves such different(?) remarks on your personal channel, then blocks you from writing a nice thank you note back in return on theirs' How SWEET ! More will be forthcoming.
How does the NBC booth decide medals? There are other booths from around the entire world. China, Japan, England, and yes Russia. What did the rest of the world think? Just because Scott and Sandra were the commentators for this video does not mean they were the only opinions that night. We just hear them through this video. Soviet bloc judging continues, on and on and on...
This is one of the great pair performances of all time -- B&S were awesome, too, but Sale and Pelletier were the clear winners on this night -- their emotion, their precision, their unison, their height on the throws, cleaner jumps -- the push away from him at the very end is genius -- it does not matter that this was a program they had used before -- this is allowed and within the rules -- they elevated it and made it even better than they had skated it previously -- well done!
beevan- what happened at the olympics was that the Russian pair had a less than flawless performance and S & P had the performance of their life and was perfect. The judges awarded the gold to the Russian. It later came out that the French judge was pressured into voting for the Russian team in return for a vote for the French dance team.
BeeVan19- Read Ozmarie99' comment on this site..that says it all. Read the book Frozen Assets where even Lloyd Eisler says their actions did nothing good for the Sport. Christopher Dean said if these Games had been held in Europe or Asia there would not have been any of this nonsense. Oh..and hand1417-LE and Dean are World Champions&an Olympic Gold Medalist. I tend to respect THEIR insight.Eisler is Canadian as well.Even HE knew this was not right.S&P demanded...&did not get $20,000 per show.
I don't know what kind of experience you have in skating, but there are no ILLEGAL HAND HOLDS at all in this program, as I said before I am a pairs skater, and judge. As for LE his credibility within in the skating world is not to be desired. Your comments show that your knowledge about skating is limited at best. Also, there is no such thing as a 4-4 split, there were 9 judges not 8.
You are ALL beating a dead horse. Why blame it on this couple? The French judge was found to be corrupt and therefore the system had to be changed. There will never be a perfect system to suit everyone obviously.

Sale and Pelletier were in fact given the gold medal because of judging fraud. Why can't we see the beauty that is the two teams. B & S with their beauty and elegance and S & P with their athleticism and heart. Celebrate the differences between the two teams! It is a shame that the judging scandal ruined the event but don't forget the Canadian team delivered the more memorable performance that night(with no visable errors).
Memorable? And skating to " Meditation" isn't !? They dusted off a worn out program. It's the Olypmpics: they didn't come up with anything NEW. Oh yes I forgot: they fell down at the end of the OP, yet the Canadian and German judges placed them FIRST?! You want to talk @ judging fraud, let's start there. Not to mention that gift of a World Title. Sorry but S&P are NOT mentioned among the great pair skaters. They're remembered for their INFAMY more than anything
I am American and also a Norteamericano. They are Canadian skating in Utah broadcasted thru NBC.They are truely good, but I voted for the Russian pair,B and S because they are better.
I'm french canadian. I would tend to love these two but even though I think their are good.. it doesnt match elena and anton. And I'm a bit fed up of some north american talking about bad russians... but those russians were talented and worked hard too. We have quality skaters too in Canada: Patrick Chan, Virtue and Moir and they can be on top because of their quality of skating. It's all about quality of skating. I don't think G&G were on top for so many years because they were mean russians...
@heyheyheylolita I too believe that all teams during the 2002 Olympics worked hard. That's why they're at the Olympics. I'm pretty sure the Russian team had nothing to do with the scandal and was completely unaware of what was happening behind closed doors. They're a good team as well. I agree with you on this one.
Very good but B/S were stunning in both SP and LP. These two never became true Olympic champions to me. Their impact on pairs figure skating both technically and artistically... is there any? Not to me.

You cannot even say that argument of "under the new system so and so would have won". NO. simply because they were doing programs for the 6.0 system for that time. If it was the new system, then these teams would naturally make routines for the new system. But it was 2002.
" If you have a black Heart ?! " This is about expressing an opinion which everyone is entitled to do within the bounds of civility. If there was any bias it was on the part of the announcers. I seem to recall , you voicing your opinion on sites where you DEFINITELY were not a fan but no one begrudges YOU the right to express an opinion that wasn't in lock step with everyone else's.
I hate this cross-eyed whiney girl for stealing the spotlight from what is rightfully a gold winning performance of B&S. Interpretation, transitions and choreography of Moskvina are far superior to this program, not to mention that Meditation is grand opera compared to the cheesy 'love story'. Oh well... the scandal did its job. IOC was pressured to give a second gold medal and what we are witnessing in this sport now is the result...
I think that the commentary for Sale and Pelletier's short program was spot on:
"...a bit shallow"
Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze bridged elements together, whereas the Canadians program was more along the lines of: element, smile, element, stop, move a few paces, element, element, smile.
Ironically, the CoP that stemmed from this night's skating meant the end of programs like this. Although I personally think it's lovely to watch, I'm not sure that a pairs team could even get out of Sectionals today with this LP's long dry spells between elements and their moderate degree of difficulty. It's the easy, leisurely pacing that made this program work, but there will never be another like it in medal contention again -- unless the 6.0 system is restored. Not gonna happen.

The ISU should have better launched a query into how on earth S&P got the gold at the 2001 worlds.
If we start giving duplicates of gold medals, there will not be enough gold in this world - there have been so many controversial gold medals in figure skating, gymnastics, you name it.
Very true. If you take up a sport simply for the color of medal, then get into cross-country, swimming and diving where there's a stopwatch. Don't screw up a beautiful-yes it's subjective sport-with your complaining because you-along w/ biased announcers happen to think you " deserve a gold medal. 1991 World's, a singled axel by lloyd Eisler was the difference between them getting Silver and M&D getting gold. Yet Sale' does a zamboni on the ice w/her axel and they win? Go figure.
Its really not how well they did or did not do on the day. It is the Judges perception of how much better they were than the opposition that puts them where they are.
If People still complain who won or how good Berezhnaya & Sikharulidze was and they didnt make mistakes or what ever you have to say. You really need to move on.
I watched the actal events on tv and saw both pairs skate and both pairs scored. Jamie and David had higher scores (5.8's and 5.9's) compared to Elaina and Anton's scores(5.6's, 5.7's and like two 5.8's). However,(and this is where the controversy came in) the judges rankings(which are supposed to be based on the point totals, but as it turned out some were not)placed the Russians in 1st and the Canadians in 2nd when it should have been reversed, because the Canadians had the higher point total.
I can understand everyone having different opinions and judgements about them but I do want to inquire about one remark Hatula made if the Russians were better in every aspect I do remember a major dispute was that no matter what Hatula says about the canadian pair. The Russian pair DID fall Canadian pair did not. yet the Russians were still awarded. whatever Canadian pair may have done wrong I know that falling in skating is very bad and results in a big loss in marks. please explain.
You had better refresh your memory and watch the programs before talking. The Russian pair (and they have names, by the way)didn't fall, they didn't even have any major mistakes.
yes, they (Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze) did have a few glaring errors, one of which was what is catagorized as a fall by him during a syncronized element they were doing (Although he did not hit the ice, he did stumble which caused him to put both hands down on the ice, which is considered a fall in figure skating) when he completely fell out of a spin the two were doing.Aside from that there were a few moments where they were suppposed to be syncronized and one or the other were slightly off.
Amen hatula87! Anton NEVER had either hand on the ice. Hope they print up enough gold medals for every team that competes in pairs-who think they deserve one! Olympics are in Vancouver in 2010 so you can BET the home team pair of S&P along w/the ever "unbiased" Miz Bezic-NOT!-will be commentating. I personally like Underhill and Martini. They're true impartial professionals.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@hatula87-would like everyone who says S&P didnt fall,go back ,watch S&P OP: they crashed on the ice. OP can't win competition for you but can lose it. Two judges had them 1st? Another-spot on-had them 5th. B&S had most moving OP I've seen...Lady Caliph. Jamie did not follow ISU Rule, slammed into Anton& Elena doing a Pair element.Jamie is doing solo move. Rules state Pair doing a PAIR element during warm-up has right of way.Jamie saw him spot on.Yet US announcers only talk@Jamie, not Anton.
Elena &Anton did NOT fall. It's been said before and bears repeating: If these Games had been held in Europe or Asia and not had the very biased mizz bezic or wailing scottie acting as spokespersons for 'whiney and whinier', i.e. S&P-there wouldn't have been this manufactured controversy.Todd Eldridge was penalized for trotting out old programs but this pair not only had the same old shlock but illegal hand holds by Pelletier. Of course this wasn't mentioned by "the fair &balanced" commentators.
Whiney and and whinier? As I recall S & P didn't whine at all. The judging controversy was facilitated by the Canadian team and their coach along with other countries(Ina and Zimmerman USA). As for illegal hand holds, I am a pairs skater and there are no illegal hand holds in that program. Instead of complaining about their program why can't you realize that both programs were extraordinary in their own way, B & S with their amazing technique and grace and S & P with their athleticism/heart.
No actually they didn't whine. They demanded a Gold Medal. I know something about Figure Skating as well. Above all had they accepted their medal they would have been more respected than they are now.Why can't you realize one word from S&P,the Canadian Team would've called off their unnecessary outrage .Also there is no such thing as a tie in Figure Skating.Scott Hamilton facilitated the controversy w/his inappropriate, inaccurate" they won THAT PROGRAM!", along w/Canadian sidekick, Sandra Bezic.
Scott Hamilton didn't facilitate anything actually. Sandra Bezic is a canadian yes, however, if you remember she helped Brian Boitano to an olympic gold medal, I think overall she respects great skating. Also, commentating is very subjective, and I tend to take opinions of a past olympic champion and world medalist. Nobody demanded anything, and regarding respect, they are very well respected in the skating world, and there would be no reason not to respect them.

Go back &look at the tapes of the 2002 Games; read some of the comments of people such as hatula, etc.,who know something-a LOT @ Skating. You're entitled to your opinion but they DID demand a Gold Medal. There was no re-marking by the judges. A 4-4- split. Why was there no remarking? I USED to respect Scottie& Sandra-no more. Love Story over Meditation?Give me a break!Their program consisted of a lot of stop, stare, pose & there WERE illegal hand holds. You're entiltled to your opinion-same as me.
OK, I have to admit how biased I was at the timel however after a lot of thought (more than I should have put into something I have no control), the difference was the technical mark. I tied them on second mark; style/line/originality vs theme/character/interplay. I couldnt split them this way, 5.9 each. For me diff was clean elements. They tied in DS, throw (Jamie's werent great either), pair spins, and 3Twist. B&S won in SXS spins (David's travelled). S&P won lifts and SXS jumps. 5.8 vs 5.9
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think you are confused as to the presentation mark - it's skating skills(edges, lines, speed, flow),unison, transitions, the interpretation of the music, choreography ,variety and originality of moves. There is no style,no theme,no character or interplay. You can't possibly tie them as this is obvious that Russians were much better in every aspect (well, exept for the interpretation- it's too subjective).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
As to the technical side - tied on throws, twist, jumps(Anton stepping out of axel,Jamie&David - Jamie's triple is heavily underrotated and thus out of synch, their axels completely out of synch as well).Russians had more difficulty and quality on DS, spirals, spins (sbs and pair).Canadians had slightly better lifts, but there was an illegal support through her leg ,which should be deducted. After all technically they are about equal.
Anton did do a pretty big mistake when stepping out of his double axel though. And Jamies tripple was not more underrotated than allowed. And there was no illegal support in the canadians lift. and jamie and davids spins are just slightly easyer than the russians. They are not equal since the canadians aer better technically, and they did a better performance.
hatula is extremely well versed in all aspects of figure skating. Knows the difference between a lutz &a flutz;knows WHEN a jump is underroted and YES:-Jamie's definitely was. Plus it's been said before: S&P couldn't come up w/something NEW for the OLYMPICS?! Falling down@the end of the OP yet the Canadian&German judges marked them 1ST?!.Unbelievable.There's the fraud right there.Let's start at the OP. A very biased Scott Hamilton,a VERY self righteous Bezic & an along for the ride,Tom Hammond.
under 6.0 system the items I listed were used as part of that mark. One improvement with the new system (compenents score) is the actual definition of what makes up that score so skaters can be analyzed on each part and not just a general impression that might or might not include your comments.
If youre comment is more than just opinion, than please provide a link where you are getting your information from.

From ISU regultion 321 "Special attention must be given to choreography, unison, expression, interpretation of the music and intricate footwork, with a variety of partner positions using dance holds." There are information also in ISU 322.
Of course basic skating skills are one of the main critaria. There never has been style or theme or interplay.
I didnt know any of these pairs but in my opinion the Canadians performed the best. The Russian pair is good too, its just not as smooth as the Canadians. They did it with ease. Very syncronized, its like two hearts beating as "ONE" simply amazing!!
ok, they skated perfectly! didn't make ANY mistakes...the Russian pair was not as good the Canadians. simple as that, the Russians cheated cause of that stupid French judge.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I was moved by the Russians, not by the Canadians... The Russians were better, and despite they performed in Canada, they were scored higher. It should have stayed like that. TYhe Russians - 1st, Canadians - the 2nd. It is not only a sport, but also ART, ther is no need to quarrel over the gold medal.
Anyone who doesn't think that Jamie and David deserved to win are too caught up in the technicalities of figure skating to realize it's true beauty and power.
France and Russia were both accused of cheating in this Olympics...it was quite the scandal. The Canadians skated much better and completely clean, while the Russians didn't, but one of the judges gave the gold to the Russians in exchange for the French getting the gold in ice dancing. They didn't want to take away the golds from the Russian skaters because it wasn't their fault, but the Canadians definitely deserved this gold medal.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It was the Shame of Olympic history! It is sport and not disco to say they all skated well. Russia won ita nd do not see any reason to hang the gold on the neck of all the people who dance well.

i DEFINITELY agree. for folks who don't follow figure skating, this canadian pair were awarded first prize at the 2001 world figure skating championships -- which were held in a canadian city -- despite jamie sale's singling an intended double axel in the free skate; the pair of berezhnaya & sikharulidze skated an arguably flawless free program. furthermore, jamie sale fell on an intended triple toe loop jump in the short program, but the canadian pair were still placed 3rd -- top 3 rule.
Amazing. I remember watching it and thinking, "they so won it." But of course, cooler heads prevailed. I find it interesting that international judging slammed American Paul Hamm for not giving up his Olympic gold in 2004 for "poor judging" yet the same international judging seemed to forgive the Russians for the same thing...hope the Chinese FINALLY beat the Russians in pairs in 2010 - sick of them ALWAYS winning.
You can have your opinion as to whom should have won this event, but dear god, the current top Chinese pairs skaters are simply unwatchable;no unison, bodyline, charisma, skating skills or technique.
gotta agree with your take on that. Actually, the top American couple who was too young to compete in this year's worlds might in fact turn out to be better than any of the top teams in 2010 except maybe for Dube and Davidson and of course Savchenko and Szolkowy.
maybe thier program was simpler, but a.) this was before the rule change and b.) why wouldn't the judges reward the pair that skated at their ability and did it well, as opposed to the pair that pack their program with difficult elements that they couldnt do, and kept messing up?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Since it wasn't neighborhood kids competition where the cutest kid wins ,the strongest team won the games. Sale&Pelletier competing against one of the best pairs had only one chance to win with simplier program - if Berezhnaya&Sicharulidze had fall. They didn't.They had one occasional mistake ,everything else was brilliant.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
fyi, the canadian pair's program is an seasoned one. they introduced it in the '99 - '00 season; the russian pair's program was new and -- in my view -- more difficult to execute that the canadian's.

Both teams had minor mistakes :S&P -jumps out of synch, sbs spinslost of unison, throw landed forward, no catch on twist, prohibited hip lift.B&S - lost of balance on axel, no catch on twist, throw landed forward.

corruption!!!!! one of the french judges(Marie Reine)confessed that they cheated judging and that there was no way that the russians could lost. because of the president of the ice skating federation, the canadiens lost and that wasn't fair i play basketball, im no ice skater but i saw a documentary explaining this case the russians made several mistakes and everyone on the business that the canadien performance was the most beautiful, the most passionate thing they've ever saw
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Canadians lost because they program was much simplier than Russians, both in the interpretation and footwork, and it was old .There was a corruption but from North America media.Probably the program you saw was this media's another product.
Okay, I have watched both the SP and LP for both the Canadians and Russians several times, and I have to say that Jamie and David did deserve the Gold. The Russians had a slightly more difficult program, both times, but made mistakes that were majorly noticible. The Canadians didn't. Though both pairs skate beautifully

nine US titles and 5 world championships weighs more than a duplicate gold, and oh yeah, had she bitched hard enough about tara winning...maybe she would have gotten a gold medal too, I rest my case.
then rest it already..kwan don't got no gold from nagano and she don't got no gold from slc..second try..so rest it already..and all those bogus titles people keep dredging up...has ANY kwanatic bothered to actually watch the competitions!? anyway, kwannie don't got the one medal she wanted most OG
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I know Kwan personally yes, took from the same coach, and I said jamie and david could emulate her sportsmanship, she skated a clean program and won silver, just like the originally did. Only she was gracious.
SHE GOT BEAT BY THE BEST!!!! What is so gracious about that. Was she entitled to the Gold or something..and btw..Jamie and David DID accept their silver..it was other people who were suspicious and outraged..NO ONE WAS OUTRAGED WHEN KWAN LOST!!!!!! Oh, except for the kwannie winnie no matter whatie groupies.
Well, since she had 5.9s for 'presentation' in order to compensate for Tara's far far greater athleticism (kwan is really just a dancer on skates) and still couldn't win I highly doubt that she would have had a leg to stand on..and in Salt Lake she didn't stand on both legs long enough to get the Gold. And she couldn't petition for the OG in 06 so guess that's the end of the story..guess the usfsa didn't have time to change even more rules and allow that!
Is that why she trounced your in the Olympics? Her bad technique..she didn't NEED to stay in the sport..she reached the top on her first try..Kwan had to hang on in pursuit of the 'elusive gold'.
Oh, dear..there I go showing my ignorance and lack of education again...oh dear dear dear..should have read trounced Kwan in the Olympics and if I remember her FIRST year competing in the Nats and Worlds as well..
@libralady1010 Your rewriting of history is absolutely outrageous. You should get a job writing propaganda somewhere because of your obvious disdain for the truth and love of the grand statement that means nothing. S & P did not lead to the demise of figure skating; the corrupt judging that had long been a part of figure skating led to its loss of popularity. I remember the aftermath of the pairs very well, and S & P behaved with grace in the face of their disappointment.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Ezrateach-My love for the grand statement?!LMAO! I'll absolutely save that totally for you when you completely finish writing your propoganda, along with your ad-ahominem attacks@your disdain for people who totally &absolutely know more than you @two sides of the story. If S & P behaved with grace-come again?! then the total demise of not just the Sport but Civilization is absolutely, outrageously on Life Support. NBC absolutely loves mushrooms who are in the dark and fed bulls**t ...like you ;-)
So, you're implying that skaters who have longer careers are just doing it out of frustration? Do you wanna tell me Irina Slutskaya who was competing till the age of 27 was a lesser athlete than Tara Lipinsky, who only made it to 2 Worlds? She just happened to win on two major competitions. Michelle Kwan has never missed a podium for 10 years! That makes her a greater skater!
no, I liked tara, but I actually liked her much more as a pro when she started to actually look like an olympic champion...and I think alot of it has to do with the gold medal, had she not won, I think she would have stayed in, and I also think kwan would have, cause she likes competing so much, and Irina has been great as well, just inconsistent...kwan's always been there.
her spins were fast....her rotation on her jumps was fast, but they didn't get off the ice, and the take off's were wrong for most of them....she did not have good technique in a time where they didn't penalize for it (like now), they had to give her the 97 US title which allowed her to get to the position she was in by the time the Olympics came, but she's not a very memorable skater in my opinion.
LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL this is just tooooooo funny...take a lesson from MK???..they accepted the silver..they didn't take it any further..the OC did...they won on skates btw..thanks for the laugh!

OH NO, THEY WERE VERY VOCAL ABOUT THEIR DISAPPOINTMENT, ALMOST TO THE POINT WHERE IT GOT ANNOYING. Maybe you should take a lesson with michelle as well.-
And Shelly's whining, sobbing, sniveling all over the place wasn't annoying.not to mention her slimy backoor method of trying again in *2006*..if shelly were to give lessons..well, cheating, lying, arrogance, might be her forte..certainly NOT good sportsmanship or fair play. Sure S@P were disappointed but they didn't have a hissy fit and ummm...did Kwan ever receive duplicate Gold?
I think I'll pass on any lessons from Kwan. Now Emily Hughes could really be one to take a lesson from...grace, elegance, humility in the face of horrendous disappointment...she actually taught Kwan a lot about true sportmanship in '2006" and restored so much of FS's credibility.

I dont think michelle would give you lessons kiddo, sorry, but maybe jamie and david will...lets cry cause we get a silver and get a duplicate gold!!!
Michelle is too self centered to bother with anyone else so no worries...do you know kwannie? personally, i mean? or are you just to much a member of her cultlike following to see anything but what you want to see?
Thanks for responding to bendonna..couldn't have said it better myself! I guess no matter where you go the programmed KWAN IS THE KWEEN group follows..this wasn't about Kwan..until bedonna started in.
actually you started it by insulting her, which is pathetic and shows the kind of uneducated people that use this site, and your knowledge of the sport is quite insipid to say the least.
Oh, my my my is this site blessed or what? To have a person of your caliber commenting on what others have to say. Well, your majesty the unwashed and 'uneducated masses' have the same right to speak as you do and KWAN IS a snot nosed spoiled brat who pouted when she didn't win and flat out whined her way into Torino and crawled out.
Michelle was such a sore loser that she petitioned her way onto the US team..gotta have that Gold..oh, yeah..the Gold that is't no about..sour grapes...Kwan is a very very poor sport and in fact not a true sport at all!
you're right, Michelle took both silver and bronze, with out saying anything, actually she was proud of them and showed a lot of respect!! when she clearly deserved the gold in Nagano(SP1-FS1) and in Salt Lake (SP1-FS2)
Yes, Michelle was a good sport, which is respectful, I thought she deserved gold in 98 but not 2002, and both times she didn't ever publically complain, but accepted her medal.

@heyheyheylolita I think for so many years, The Russians were given marks which I think in my eyes were too,
too High. Not just in Figure Skating, but also in Gymnastics. There were times when I wondered why should
any other Gymnasts or Figure Skater from other countries in the world even bother to come these competitions.
When the Americans won the Team Gymnastics in Atlanta in 1996, I said finally the judges woke up and let some
body else win besides the Russians. It was great.
TheCopper05 10 months ago
@heyheyheylolita I too believe that all teams during the 2002 Olympics worked hard. That's why they're at the Olympics. I'm pretty sure the Russian team had nothing to do with the scandal and was completely unaware of what was happening behind closed doors. They're a good team as well. I agree with you on this one.

You cannot even say that argument of "under the new system so and so would have won". NO. simply because they were doing programs for the 6.0 system for that time. If it was the new system, then these teams would naturally make routines for the new system. But it was 2002.

I think that the commentary for Sale and Pelletier's short program was spot on:
"...a bit shallow"
Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze bridged elements together, whereas the Canadians program was more along the lines of: element, smile, element, stop, move a few paces, element, element, smile.
Tromkick 2 years ago 2
Ironically, the CoP that stemmed from this night's skating meant the end of programs like this. Although I personally think it's lovely to watch, I'm not sure that a pairs team could even get out of Sectionals today with this LP's long dry spells between elements and their moderate degree of difficulty. It's the easy, leisurely pacing that made this program work, but there will never be another like it in medal contention again -- unless the 6.0 system is restored. Not gonna happen.

I watched the actal events on tv and saw both pairs skate and both pairs scored. Jamie and David had higher scores (5.8's and 5.9's) compared to Elaina and Anton's scores(5.6's, 5.7's and like two 5.8's). However,(and this is where the controversy came in) the judges rankings(which are supposed to be based on the point totals, but as it turned out some were not)placed the Russians in 1st and the Canadians in 2nd when it should have been reversed, because the Canadians had the higher point total.

yes, they (Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze) did have a few glaring errors, one of which was what is catagorized as a fall by him during a syncronized element they were doing (Although he did not hit the ice, he did stumble which caused him to put both hands down on the ice, which is considered a fall in figure skating) when he completely fell out of a spin the two were doing.Aside from that there were a few moments where they were suppposed to be syncronized and one or the other were slightly off.

5.8 vs 5.9

I think you are confused as to the presentation mark - it's skating skills(edges, lines, speed, flow),unison, transitions, the interpretation of the music, choreography ,variety and originality of moves. There is no style,no theme,no character or interplay. You can't possibly tie them as this is obvious that Russians were much better in every aspect (well, exept for the interpretation- it's too subjective).
hatula87 3 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
As to the technical side - tied on throws, twist, jumps(Anton stepping out of axel,Jamie&David - Jamie's triple is heavily underrotated and thus out of synch, their axels completely out of synch as well).Russians had more difficulty and quality on DS, spirals, spins (sbs and pair).Canadians had slightly better lifts, but there was an illegal support through her leg ,which should be deducted. After all technically they are about equal.
hatula87 3 years ago

Anton did do a pretty big mistake when stepping out of his double axel though. And Jamies tripple was not more underrotated than allowed. And there was no illegal support in the canadians lift. and jamie and davids spins are just slightly easyer than the russians. They are not equal since the canadians aer better technically, and they did a better performance.

Tara had bad technique, which is why she was injured and couldnt stay in the sport past 15.
bendonna 4 years ago
Is that why she trounced your in the Olympics? Her bad technique..she didn't NEED to stay in the sport..she reached the top on her first try..Kwan had to hang on in pursuit of the 'elusive gold'.
aintnodummy 4 years ago

Darkangel127 4 years ago
no, I liked tara, but I actually liked her much more as a pro when she started to actually look like an olympic champion...and I think alot of it has to do with the gold medal, had she not won, I think she would have stayed in, and I also think kwan would have, cause she likes competing so much, and Irina has been great as well, just inconsistent...kwan's always been there.

her spins were fast....her rotation on her jumps was fast, but they didn't get off the ice, and the take off's were wrong for most of them....she did not have good technique in a time where they didn't penalize for it (like now), they had to give her the 97 US title which allowed her to get to the position she was in by the time the Olympics came, but she's not a very memorable skater in my opinion.

Maybe you should take a lesson with michelle as well.-
bendonna 4 years ago
And Shelly's whining, sobbing, sniveling all over the place wasn't annoying.not to mention her slimy backoor method of trying again in *2006*..if shelly were to give lessons..well, cheating, lying, arrogance, might be her forte..certainly NOT good sportsmanship or fair play. Sure S@P were disappointed but they didn't have a hissy fit and ummm...did Kwan ever receive duplicate Gold?
aintnodummy 4 years ago 2
And speaking of annoying and downright nauseating try watching Kwan's self pitying and excuse filled press conferences..but, ummm...still no Gold.
aintnodummy 4 years ago
I think I'll pass on any lessons from Kwan. Now Emily Hughes could really be one to take a lesson from...grace, elegance, humility in the face of horrendous disappointment...she actually taught Kwan a lot about true sportmanship in '2006" and restored so much of FS's credibility.

I dont think michelle would give you lessons kiddo, sorry, but maybe jamie and david will...lets cry cause we get a silver and get a duplicate gold!!!
bendonna 4 years ago
Michelle is too self centered to bother with anyone else so no worries...do you know kwannie? personally, i mean? or are you just to much a member of her cultlike following to see anything but what you want to see?
ithinkformyself 4 years ago
Thanks for responding to bendonna..couldn't have said it better myself! I guess no matter where you go the programmed KWAN IS THE KWEEN group follows..this wasn't about Kwan..until bedonna started in.
aintnodummy 4 years ago
actually you started it by insulting her, which is pathetic and shows the kind of uneducated people that use this site, and your knowledge of the sport is quite insipid to say the least.
bendonna 4 years ago
Oh, my my my is this site blessed or what? To have a person of your caliber commenting on what others have to say. Well, your majesty the unwashed and 'uneducated masses' have the same right to speak as you do and KWAN IS a snot nosed spoiled brat who pouted when she didn't win and flat out whined her way into Torino and crawled out.
aintnodummy 4 years ago
Michelle was such a sore loser that she petitioned her way onto the US team..gotta have that Gold..oh, yeah..the Gold that is't no about..sour grapes...Kwan is a very very poor sport and in fact not a true sport at all!
ithinkformyself 4 years ago
you're right, Michelle took both silver and bronze, with out saying anything, actually she was proud of them and showed a lot of respect!! when she clearly deserved the gold in Nagano(SP1-FS1) and in Salt Lake (SP1-FS2)
sergioayala 4 years ago
Yes, Michelle was a good sport, which is respectful, I thought she deserved gold in 98 but not 2002, and both times she didn't ever publically complain, but accepted her medal.
bendonna 4 years ago 3
Well in 2002 not winning the free skate but yes overall

they did not deserve to win , they skate like robots and this program had been used over and over, the Russians were faster and more graceful, poor sportsmanship on the part of Canada

pff. not true. The Russians made at least 2 mistakes and tripped, the Canadians were flawless, and even if it were an easier performance, did it in a truly better way.

I agree. Their program was well-choreographed by simple and they were like robots on ice. N. American media acted like cry-babies.
