  • Such a great look with those Nudie suits! These guys looked like stars! Todays acts look like they are ready to work out in a corn field!

  • this is where i learned to love music

  • I used to live in West Plains Missouri where he was born at love his music

  • is fag man

  • I grew up with country music and rock-n-roll. Still rockin' in the country. Too bad it's California country

  • This is country picking at its best!

  • this is my grandpa's brother... when i was 6 years old, remember my grandpa and grandma telling me to wave good-bye to him at airport! its neat that he is on youtube so i have idea about his music and who he was!!!!

  • @pmwagonera123 he was a realitive of mine also, My G'mothers cousin, she didnt care for him and would never go see him after he became famous (sited a full of himself attitude) i did make contact with him several years ago through a letter telling him who i was and how we were kin , he was nice and sent a wonderful letter and some autographed photos for my sons. I'm sorry i never got to meet him in person.

    ... pure country

  • @arkansastraveler70 oh neat... no don't know him... the person he is... is interesting to find that out.... thnxs

  • Did she crash the car intentionally, and therefore kill him? What do you all think?

  • @Markulatum

    Naaaw.

  • i live in carroll county md lol

  • wow i appreciate that i can watch this!

  • I'm 25 and I like this song. I still remember the last time I heard it on the radio when they did classic country night on Sundays.

  • A true Legend, this is one of my favourite songs, as Porter sang it

  • Obviously these idiots hitting dislike are high on drugs and have no clue what Great Country Classics are all about

  • @TJtheDJMr Or maybe it's the fact that Porter Wagoner sucks and the banjo player in this performance fucked it all up

  • that is exactly right anyone that clicks dislikes on classic country music has no heart

  • Great Man and singer. He sure is missed. I still see his old shows on RFD. Does anyone now what his guitars Bruce's last name is. He was a real gifted musician.

  • Simple times, Simple Music. Wish we could go back to those days., the pace being slower, the economy better. And where country music stars were respected for who they were, playing REAL country music. Where the image was maintained, not just talked about. Porter was a great singer and a true gentleman! and looking at him here brings back wonderful memories of my childhood days and the power of that living room television set as we all used to gather around to be entertained and see who was on!

  • Did a little research. That is Buck Trent playing lead banjo, on the Electric Banjo he invented!

  • No one else ever made a banjo sound like a steel guitar.

  • True classic, the song and the man!

  • No more singers like him left.

  • we need more music like this in the world

  • we all luv you Porter God rest in peace we miss you still. Never forget you

  • Don't know how the older Country singer's??? hope all is well with them??

  • wow...i love it

  • A simple song with a a great message!

  • thats a sick suit he's got on

  • @abced1009 That was his style

  • How does that banjo sound like a steel guitar.

  • @dennisndodie electric Banjo

  • I was there that night it was one of the worst i have ever seen i was just a kid.

  • @SIGNALSTAT The helmet your required to wear probably disrupted your ability to hear this classic song. lol

  • @71POPPA the wreck was tragic.i was 6 years old.

  • great old time country..todays music is for people who don't like country

  • Country music lost a statesman in "The Carroll County Accident." RIP Porter!

  • Anybody that clicks dislike on classic country music obviously has no heart. Ignore them, they do not matter!

  • @liberty1947 probably some gay justin beiber fan

  • Classic country, this is one of my favourites. Thank you so much for sharing this gem!

  • i love this song

  • Three people dislike Buck Trent's electric banjo, or wagon wheels?

  • great music...not like most of todays crap

  • That's one pimpin suit....what a guitarist....lmfao

  • good job @maddieestelle23

  • im 15 and love all his music

  • what a wounderful song. Porter made counrty music

  • Nice job, Porter. However, I don't understand why a country musician always has to electrify everything. IMHO, that so-called "banjo" sounds terrible. If it doesn't quack like a duck and walk like a duck..it isn't a duck. And this electric banjo ain't a banjo.

Just play an electric guitar already, 'cuz that's what it sounds like. Leave the real banjo picking to the experts, like Scruggs.

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL Try catching Buck Trents show in Branson. He can play most anything with strings electric or not. I don't really care much for electric anything as I am a purist when it comes to music. You mention Scruggs the greatest thing I ever heard was him and Uncle Josh playing the same music on two different insturments, and it sounded like it was written that way.

  • I loved Buck Trent's electric 5-string. I wish we had more of that talented fellow on You Tube.

  • Dnload the audio from this track at speedyconversion doht cohm.

  • That is Buck Trent playing banjo, he played on HEE HAW

  • why is country music not more like this today! it's a shame what they done to it! but i got utube to let great music live forever in my heart!!!

  • @lvf91265 Amen, they may take many things from us today...but they cannot erase our memeories of how it used to be.

  • R.I.P Porter you were great.

  • Hey, this is the guy who thought it was lovely that Borats sister was voted as "best sex in mouth" :)

  • How cool are those Nudie suits! - Great stuff!

  • I'm 28yrs old from Brooklyn, NY and Country Music is my FAVORITE genre of music. Especially REAL Country Music!! :)

  • I always wondered how they made that great sounding guitar intro. Turns out it was a banjo. I guess it is easier to make pinch sounds with the greater volume a banjo has. Great story telling country song sung with Porter's great voice. I have this on vinyl. Bought in the eighties. Thanks for posting.

  • @fridrikur Its actually an electric banjo, invented by Buck Trent if I remember correctly

  • @kymyst Thank you for clarifying that. Now that you mention it I remember hearing something about an electric banjo years ago. It sounds great on this song

  • Rest in Peace Porter - Oct 27th 2007 we lost a great star.

  • hey i got one of his albums, its called potter wagoner the blue grass story, it has a yellow cover and has like chinese wrinting on it? any body knows anything about this album with chinese writting?

  • Man, I wish they made country like this again!!

  • Another incredible country artist who has never received his due. Unknown to many, Porter had an amazing 6-octave range (that's almost an entire piano). His years studying vocal performance at Julliard were marked by his appearance in a performance of Puccini's "La Boheme", in which Porter sang every role.

He later debuted at Carnegie Hall, where his selections delightfully ranged from coleratura soprano to basso profundo. Traetta, Rossini and Wagner all wrote pieces specifically for him.

  • @StupidObamaNigger I would bet that you might be the one that is hated in Carroll County....

  • Great suit!

  • Wish all of the musicians of today would pay more attention to music like this. My Grandmother would fist fight you if you spoke ill of Porter Waggoner or Buck Owens! LOL! And Buck Trent was a legend to me. Great musician.

  • THANKS.

  • Thanks.

  • One of the great country songs of all time. You get goose bumps when Porter sings "The county ordered DAD a marble monument..."---Porter sneaks that one right up on you. He doesn't telegraph it and you don't see it coming!

  • That has to be the greatest banjo solo ever done by one of the true masters of the Banjo, Buck Trent!

  • Porter was friendly on stage but he wasn't and isn't a friendly fellow offstage--two friends were sitting in a lobby where he sat and one was facing Porter and Porter wouldn't even acknowledge their presence though they were the only folks in the room with him at the time and Porter was no more than eight or ten feet away facing my friend---he turned his head and tried to avoid them---there's others just that snooty offstage too--one is Roy Clark and another is Hank Snow---not really friendly

  • Those high on the hill guitar string runners should stop playing for a movement and listen to these guys.ITS NOT simple music. That back and forth honkits swinging rhythm is something thats rare in todays music.I sure wish Porter was recorded Live like we hear it here.So nice to hear this song in a natural Porter Wagoner way without cling clong piano and other over dubbs.

  • This was one of my favourite songs as a kid.

  • I love this tune

  • Does anybody knows the names of the other musicians?

  • @beticanoa jack little on drums, george mccormick on guitar, buck trent on banjo, don warden on steel, mack magaha on fiddle, speck rhodes on bass fiddle.

  • @headredbone thanks

  • The Ten Greatest Things To Happen To Country Music: 10. The Grand Ole Opry 9. WKRP Cincinatti 8. The Porter Wagoner Show 7. RCA-Nashville 6. Ernest Tubb 5. Jimmie Rodgers 4. Sun Record Co. 3. MGM Records 2. Hank Williams 1. Porter Wagoner Jake~ North Carolina. Porter Wagoner Rocks!
  • Porter ROCKS.

  • this is the better type of country

  • @joeymashewharlow Joey, Go listen to some fuckin' Merle Haggard, or Marty Robbins. Amazing country right there.

  • i love the way he sings

  • This music is badass! My conservative dad used to play this music..and now I got a flattop haircut and play this music with all my pride....I`m European.

    God Bless country music!!!

  • You're missed sir. RIP

  • The preoccupation with irony in music amongst other things gets on my nerves, however, the fact that Porter Wagoner had a hit in the states with a little thing called Rubber room does tickle me. The sleeve cover pictured Porter leering into the lens, with a particularly heavy application of pan-cake trickling down his forehead...in the corner of his room, a discarded strait- jacket.

  • My great grandma loved Porter Waggoner. We used to listen to all of his albums. I was given the love for this man from her. Porter is always at the top of my greatest lists.

  • Sad story--but great!

  • My father wrote this song.

  • @robfergusonjr be proud, as long as people view this video or listen to this song, he will be remembered

  • @bphutchins Thanks ... I will be.

  • @robfergusonjr

Would Carroll County, TN be the setting of this song? I grew up in Benton County, next door to Carroll County and did Porter's hair for 13 years.

  • @grammie0301 no way!!!

  • @MrUSA21

    No way what?

  • Thanx so much for posting this classic...kudos!

  • I love this sad, beautiful song! Porter gave so much to his fans.

  • you where my grandpaws favorote and is my fave to. rest in peace grandad.

  • Brilliant performance! Oh, to have a suit like Porter's!

  • I always thought this intro was on a Pedal Steel or Tele - amazing!

  • I would to hear Buck Trent's Electric Banjo with the Palm Pedals and Scruggs type tuners. He and Buddy Emmons built this instrument and became Porters sound as much as Luther Perkins was to Cash's sound. This was my first exposure to string pulling on a non-steel instrument, which led me to become a Palm Pedal Guitar Player. Buck is the man! ......... Kenny Clark

  • R.I.P. Porter they just don't make them like this anymore I love my country

  • I am a lukewarm Country fan, but I saw Porter in his last big show opening for the White Stripes at MSG. He was just brilliant.

  • WHOOOOOOOo

  • Porter could always pull it off live. He seemed to give his best on stage. The great Dolly penned this I believe.

  • I like this song !

  • What a contribution to country music Porter made. This song is just a small part--but what a great part.

Rest in peace, Porter. You brought us lots of happiness and good times.

  • @texasgoodolgirl Kind words, and so true. x

  • I love this song.. So sad.

  • R.I.P Porter Wayne, you were one of the greats.

  • My uncle, Leon Rhodes, was touring with him before he died and they came here to play at a casino in early 2000s. I went to visit my uncle on that Saturday and he asked if we could give Porter a ride to the casino. I was so nervous. A couple hours later Porter wanted to go back to the lodge and he got in my car smoking a cigarette, which is a no-no. It was Porter Waggoner, though, so I bit my lip and just played chauffuer for a day to Porter Waggoner. What a memory. RIP.

  • @conniekay114 You lucky SOB! :-) No offence meant.

  • We miss you Porter!!!

  • Count me in. I miss him very much.

  • this was the beginning of the end of civilization

  • So exactly what happned? Did Mary Ellen kill him on purose? Was he having an affair with her and she didnt know he was married and had the wreck when she found out? Why was the ring in the match box?

  • The answer is the two were having an affair and the car accident was just what it was,

an ordinary tragic car accident. The son found the wedding ring and knew right then and there his father was having an affair with this woman and so he disposed of the ring and swore to keep the secret of the affair so as to preseve the good reputation of both

    Mary Ellen and his father.

  • @noaanhc Bingo!.

  • They were having an affair. I am guessing sense it was such a small County. That she knew him and knew he was married. IDK i think some people feel more guilty when they have there rings on and cheating. I mean why else would she lie.

  • yeah i live in carroll county the higher your truck the cooler u r but yeah this is a true story happened in keymar across from the bar crossroads

  • i live in CC, and its true: the biggest thing that happens IS the country fair! haha

  • One of his best.

    greeting from Norway

  • he is my great great uncle

  • this song is based on an accident that happened in carroll county ky. im from there.

  • there is an artist from Northern Maine who is keeping music like this alive he has video's on here as well take a look when you get time. Just type in Randolph Michaud and you will find them.

    God Bless

    L. Michaud

  • i love this song and i wish there were more like it country music needs to back to this kind of singing

  • My friend I agree with you, but with a bunch of drunken trash in Nashville like, Toby Keith, Taylor Swift, and others, it will never be that way.

  • @skeetdog1957 great

  • So did Mary-Ellen ultimately die or not?

"it seemed like Mary-Ellen Jones would surely die, but she lived long enough to testify."

  • No she lived, she was in a wheel chair and died a broken woman!

  • The inference here is that she did pass away - and lied - even though she presumably knew she was dying. This song has echoes for me personally. I never knew my mother had a first husband until just after she died.

  • Carrol County Ga.

  • is this song based on a true accident if it is what state was it

  • I don't imagine it's based on a real accident, but it's referring to Carroll County, Mississippi, which is also the setting of "Ode to Billie Joe" by Bobbie Gentry.

  • Did Mary-Ellen die? The lyrics seem to go each way.

  • Drummer, lulz.

  • All of the band lulz, except the banjo player...

  • this is such a good song and the carrol county accident really happend so sad

  • he has a great voice and i and my step daddy love this song it is such a great song i love this song it is my favorite

  • I was in the first audience that Porter performed this for..

1968 (i think).. Sudan Temple, New Bern, NC I was 9 yrs old

  • hey i lvie in New Bern now wow thats weird and im 17 1/2

  • VERY GOOD

  • they don't make em like this anymore, so sad!!

  • Mel Tillis also did this song on one of his albums. I remember because it was one of my dad's favorites.

  • A great country song, for some reason that I dont know, it reminds me of another great song *Ode to Billie Joe* by Bobbie Gentry...

  • remember this from colorado am radio when i lived in denver and delivered into the mountains.

  • Who is the banjo player at the beginning of the video?

  • Buck Trent, he went on to do " Hee Haw ", with Buck Owens

  • Thank you for the info. He looked familiar but I could not place him. I recognize him now that you provided the info.

    Thanks again.

  • I don't the guys would dress like this toay but kind of like the memories this brings

  • A little twist in the ending wrighting used to count. The irony is the story teller.

  • That electric banjo is sensational. A true signature of Porter Wagoners sound - never heard it anywhere else. Great video!
