  • I disagree when you said 4 engis means your safe. If none of them are using a basic engi set thats their own fault. That only means that they have no clue how to play team fortress. Balence.

  • @cantbeatmeification RED Engineers can use the Wrangler to jump up onto a ledge that no one can reach, making BLU almost helpless.

  • I think what the Engineer has (except for the useless Jag) is good on it's own.I always stick to the regular Shotgun,Pistol and Wrench and even then,the Frontier Justice,Wrangler and Gunslinger are also good weapons and so is the Southern Hospitality.Quality over quantity.

  • How about (continuing on to the alternate sentries), an item that lets him build a Mortar cannon or something? It fires in an arc, and causes an explosion in a set radius (possibly giving more use to the wrangler?) and does high damage, but can only fire in that area.

  • It's hard to give the Engineer new things without breaking the class. Unless you use the mini-sentry there's not a lot of direct combat that the Engineer actually does. There's also no way to give him a new PDA for new buildings unless you incorporate it with one of the loadout slots that can be changed (à la Gunslinger) and then you have to come up with a new weapon that functions well without breaking gameplay mechanics.

  • A taser-gun that, when shooting enemy buildings, allows 2 second control over that building. It would be good if you're moving up and you don't have time to place a turret, or just don't have the amount of metal needed. The downside would be that it only gives bleeding effect to enemy and no raw damage (basically poison gun). It would also give the enemy engineer a shocking surprise as its own turret is shooting him!

  • @animegurl411422 That "hacking gun" is a really good idea. But I think it would be better if:

    -on shoot over an enemy sentry, targets both teams (won't be disabled, but will shoot also their team) for about two seconds

    -the sentry won't target his engie (that would screw totally the tanking technique)

    -the gun doesn't do any damage to humans

  • What about level 4 dispensers, teles, and sentries?

    But...you need 400 metal to upgrade it to level 4.

    Level 4 Sentry: 4 chainguns instead of 2.

    Level 4 Dispensers: It gives health faster, it gives ammo faster, and it gives 70 metal per second for engie.

    Level 4 Tele: Teleports faster.

  • Agreed, should the engineer be given new options it could have drastic consequences. With that said however, it is disappointing just how few unlocks are available for the engineer. Personally I would have loved to see an alternative to the wrangler that lets you see a first-person view of what your sentry is pointed at. Or maybe a primary weapon with the potential for more effective use in medium range.

  • He needs more wrenches. Things like faster attack speed or more efficient repairing or more health, slower building speed or he's slower when carrying buildings.

  • I hate when there are lots of engies but they insist on building level 3 stuff in the back instead of helping the team. Then they just get destroyed by a spy because no one is there to help them.

  • Repairing from distance would be non-sense. There are maps where you ccan place a sentry at control point or intelligence and idle one step from the respawn point and still see that sentry.

  • What about a pocket which is like the gunboats. (Not a weapon just an accessory) And then the pocket allows him to have more metal... 300 or something... Allowing him to carry more metal at the time... The downside could be like decreased building speed, or it hurt you over time if you don't have any metal... Cause then the engineer is hurt inside =( (Joking) But i think the other with decreased building speed would be cool!

  • @BlazyToast Sticky and Rocket = Explosion knockback which is real. The impact damages the person not the knockback itself. FAN = Its on the lightest character. You dont see heavy having something like it, Bonk = energy drink to a hyperactive scout so it pretty much would happen. Air blast = compressed air, invisibility and disguise are made up. Blue and Red teams just for color difference. Most of it if not all is logical. DUH

Also when I say Sticky Jumper I mean that it does NO DAMAGE. FAN is also a shotgun. FRICKIN shotgun. The FAN also knocks other classes away on blank.... *Facepalm*

  • They need to do a Shotgun that can destroy Sappers at a price of Damage or something.

  • The concept of a long range repairing gun is a concept suggested time and time again, in a way, it could work, but if handeld badly, it could end up being an irritating weapon.

    Personally, they should have given engie a shotgun similar to the family bushiness, a more spammy combat shotgun would have worked with the combat engie build.

  • Backpack dispenser, not upgradeable (lvl 1 or lvl 1.5). Potentially slower movement, droppable to improve running speed. I think it would help a little on payload offense.

  • What about a shotgun that has only 4 shots but each pellet that hits gets you +10 metal

    Or a weapon that replaces your pistol that increases your base move speed by 10% and increases your speed when your moving your gear up by 25%

  • Valve really doesn't care about balance anymore. As someone else said earlier a Valve dev said they didn't have engie items because it didn't pass their technical standards (too many polys for example).

  • I think valve would have released new stuff for engi but they just haven't come up with any good ideas that would break the class

  • I think they should have did something with the sentry level's, like level one has a damage reduction after X amount of kills and level two could maybe heal only when in combat, and then level 3 could link to only one other engineer sentry and target the same player or something like that just give people a choice of what level they want instead of everyone aiming for level 3

  • A Good Engineer Item I would like to create would be a set: The HandyMAN Set

    -A new Type of sentry: 25% less Health. But When You Carry It You Can Run 20% Faster. Good For payload maps But Not For Capture Point

    -New Teleportal: Larger with TWO teleportals But It Has 25% less health and takes damage for every teleport( around 30 before death)

    -New Dispenser: Gives Only health But 35% and has 25% less health

    I don't Have Any Names

    I would be great for engies who want to keep a place safe very fast

  • Something Ive been thinking about for the Engineer would be some kind of microchip or something just for looks that takes up the pistol slot. Its a passive item that allows you to keep a fraction of your revenge crits in case you died.

    I tend to get a few kills with my sentry but plenty of times I die right when they blow up my sentry. So a way to keep a few revenge crits would be cool. It should probably max at a certain amount so you can't have an infinite amount. Anyway, just a thought.

  • I was suprised that the Engineer got ABSOLUTELY nothing. Not even a hat. As for the Engineer not getting anything, I can understand that, as the Engie is the most difficult class to balance.

    But I do feel dissapointed, as all he has are the Engineer Update weapons, the Southern Hospitality, and the Jag. Then I see Soldier and Demoman getting so many new weapons, I can't help to feel jealous.

  • I think the Engineer should have at least gotten a new shotgun or pistol. But an idea I've had for a whole for the Engineer is if he had a wrench that changed the teleporter into a jump pad, like in Quake 3.

  • Let's look at what the engie update brought us:

    1) The Frontier Justice. Good sidegrade. Ugly model.

    2) Wrangler. Breaks map design. Gives the engie the ability to spam a chokepoint by holding M1 and M2 from a mile away.

    3) Gunslinger. Replaces the engie's powerful buildings that provide area denial with things that can only be described as "mechanical pissants".

    4) Moving stuff. Very helpful, necessary change to the engie.

    Thank god they left him alone for the uber update. He's fine as is.

  • To be honest I would have liked to have seen a new shotgun/rifle or whatever that has roughly the same range, hitbox and accuracy as the unscoped sniper rifle but does way less damage, it could help the Engineer scare off long range attackers with something other than the pistol which can be pretty inaccurate.

  • A pistol that instead of bullets, it uses metal. It would be used to repair gear from a significant distance. The downside would be a damage decrease. This allows the engie to feel more mobile and not feel tied to the turtling mindset.

  • @doubleyouteeef I would prefer a pistol for the engineer that would do more damage and let him equip it as his primary weapon, that way the engineer could equip the wrangler and a pistol at the same time, making the engineer possibly be able to stick to more medium range attacks and focus on attacking from multiple directions at once. I think this would also deter the engineer from turtling.

    What about a "pistol" who acted as a nanobot injector? It would be able to repair the buildings and destroy sappers (at the same speed as with the wrench) from distance, give ammo to the allies, and eat up the ammo of the enemies you shoot instead of doing damage, forcing them to retreat to reload/get ammo: all of it at the expense of metal.

    Also, as replacement for the shotgun, a personal teleporter who allows you to use your teleporter exit from anywhere, (continues)

  • @darkprogram even if sapped, so you can go save your stuff easily, but in exchange of losing your bigger personal firepower. Another version could be a portable teleporter wich teleports whoever uses your entry to where you are.

    And for the wrench, i see these posibilities:

    -Deploying buildings with full health in exchange of a slower construction time

    -Using your ammo as metal, with the exchange of a big reduction of health for example.

    -And something related to lvl4 buildings.

  • I think a great engie Idea would be have a upgrade to the wrangler where u give up ur dispencer to have a lvl 2 sentry and giving up ur teliporters for a lvl 3 so all ur left with is ur shot gun wragler and a pistol

  • Hey star, when you do game play like this, with the Engi, sniper, or scout, can you try your best to tell the medics not to pocket you? It makes it kind of frustrating to see where you should have died, but lived because you have a pocket. Just a thought, you don't have to do it, but it would be nice. Thanks

  • There's already a bunch of wrench replacements, but for some reason no one cares about them (except the gold wrench).

  • fyi star in the original class updates the medic was the FIRST to get new weapons, not the last. This was the uber update because of the meet the medic.

  • Perhaps a new weapon for the engineer can be an experimental teleportal that replaces the dispencer but its lvl 1,2,3 are faster than the default tele. But the downside is that it hurts your team mates up to a maximum of 35 depending on how far you teleport. I think this wouldn't be that game changing and useful when your team only has 1 teleportal.

  • @Niichts Actually, I read from a Valve employee on the forums that the main reason there was no engineer update was that there were no models with high enough quality submitted, not because of balance concerns or worries about how the game will change.

    Anyway, nice commentary as usual!

  • valve said the main reasons the engineer didnt get any new weapons is because

    1) they didnt have any good models submitted to use (obviously a lie, some of the models are epic)

    2) like you said, they kept making the engineer too powerful or too weak (the repair node, for example)

    personally, i wanted the engineer to have a mini-dispenser (*Gasp!*) on his back so he could easily move up with his teammates and helping them without hindering his main role of area denial too much.

  • There was a building that valve was thinking about but removed... It replaced the dispenser and could repair buildings on it's own. I forgot what it was called though

  • I mentioned on the forums that I was hoping for some kind of small vehicle with a minidispenser on the back, such as a jeep or a dune buggy so to allow the engie to have another way to transport his allies up front and give them skirmishing cover while they fire out of the back cab. Aside from the Heavy and a medic in his pocket, there's nothing resembling mobile cover in this game. I thought something like this would help an Engie on 5cp, which is his weakest map style.

  • I was hoping the uber update for the engie would have been a minisentry nerf. It should take more than 100 metal and two seconds to shut down every scout in the game.

  • I remember seeing a fake engineer update with one called the recycler that would process every enemies corpse and spit out ammo / health for the team. It would certainly be a team weapon and create some very interesting sentry spots.

  • i feel like the amputator and the solemn vow are weird because they are just straight up upgrades from the bonesaw

    +rocket/sticky jumpers and player sstrafeing would take more damge since the guns are very acrute on most of the players

  • i can already think of names for multiple items, the more interesting option being a new wrench called "The Atom Smasher." im DEFINITELY going to develop this further, im just garbage at developing 3D models for the items

  • I think engineer should have a six-shooter. It could deal more damage but have a slower firerate and half the ammo.

    And maybe a laser gun, like a cartoony laser gun that's bright red/blue you hold like a pistol and it's mussel is a retro-looking satelite thing from a spy movie and it shoot bright green lasers.

    Apperance: Look like heat sensing googles.

    Upside: They do not need to be out to use the ability,like Triple jumping with the Atomizer. When use mouse2 the team color and silhouette of players can be seen, and can see through walls. Meaning you can see spies or incoming forces, to a certain range.

    Downsides: You can't move when activated (note you can turn, just not move), and you can't see landscape feautures (like the wall as stated above)

    Just an idea.

  • There is one item I want, it was showcased in a comic just after the update. The Engineer was battling with Saxton Hale with a sort of portable sentry thing strapped to him, I thought that was really cool! I would like Valve to add something like that, and I'm interested about how something like it would change how the Engineer is played.

  • I think that valve basically added a tenth class down the line, the demo knight. He is so different than vanilla demoman that he might as well be another class.

  • For an Engineer item I would like a pistol that does a little bit more damage like the scout one, but it's downside would be that it would replace the dispenser with a mini dispenser that buils faster, heals faster, but gives no metal, can't be upgraded or repaired.

    Another idea that comes to mind is a pistol that gives you metal x% gained from damage, and gives you the mini dispenser, so you gain metal from fighting off enemies.

    Yeah, I love playing combat engineer.

  • @Tallulah1987 If you're thinking with gunslinger, when I play combat engie I rarely build dispensers anyway and if they couldn't be a decent metal source they'd lose their only use to me. Maybe just can't be upgraded/repaired?
