  • bela música pena que ao vivo ele canta muito mal kkkkkkkkkkkk

  • This song was extra-ordinarily brilliant in the studio and on Low Life. But sounds like a hackle of donkees live....And by the way, VOYETRA-8 SYNTHESIZERS RULE THE FUCKING PLANET!!! :p

  • @Sjobeck7 you had to be there ...

  • They sound great on record but live... ha! LOL! well that's a whole nuther story. Wall of noise live. They blow thru songs & occasionally pause between songs for Bernard to slur some unintelligible garble or say something that's obnoxious or slightly insulting & BAM walk off stage, lights up in 45 minutes. He can't hold a tune for his life. They sound out of tune or play in conflicting keys. Hooky's bass blares over everything. Mess! 86, 87 & 89 shows were as described. Love 'em, but not live!

  • Stephen Morris is such a fucking rad ass drummer

  • Love New Order.... would love to see them perform in Japan again!!!!!

  • Fuck.

This is why I still love 'em

  • wow, he really can't sing... but somehow the whole thing works.

  • All those people i would kill to get my hands on stephen's Rogers drums and electronics. Damn it, i saw one on ebay for 1200 dollars

  • This is a great song and a great performance by an even more superior band, but man once Hook really starts layin it down on the bass in the last 2-3 minutes this song just explodes.

  • @Goodywagon Very true in every way.

  • @Goodywagon that bass is killer

  • Porto Alegre-RS. New Order "100"

  • one question: Why did they bring the computers and equipment when they could have just put the music on tape, then played that back in concert as a backing track?

  • AWESOME!

  • 1:08-1:31 = <3

  • I appreciate the close up of the drummer. That is a shot I like to get if I can!

  • New Ordes is one of my favrorite bands of the 80s and early 90s, and that is very dificult to say, because of the amazing bands of that great decade.

  • Completely in love with Hookie !!

  • Song about late night visits into the park. New order inspired another raincoat brigade perhaps.

  • bernard turns 55 today!!!

  • Just always reminds me life is so shit my fave NO Song

  • This is the BEST Live performance of this song EVAR!

  • This guy can't sing.

  • @sostav Bernard never wanted to sing, some times he is alright and other times he is bad, New Order where a work in progress after the death of JOY DIVISION

  • @sostav can you?

  • @sostav stupid twat sorry but you proper twat

  • @101Cypher you're fucking piga!

  • @sostav not that i know what a piga is but im really fucking crying now into my brew, you div whopper!!

  • great song, his singing is not perdect but it adds to the feeling of the music....it is not supposed to sound pretty

  • One of my fav NO songs.......I love walking in the park when it gets late at night.....like a fucking rat man......I wont even mention jagging off. Thats why i smash all mirrors where I dwell.

  • Kapitalny zespół. Muza nic nie straciła ze swojego żaru.

  • Okay...why doesn't this video have over 100 million hits, because this is a damn fine song! I love Bernard's voice and I love how you can sing along to it and feel like his equal...Very good song!!!

  • Just enjoy it for what it is people,a top tune by a top band.If you want to hear a singer hit all the notes type in Tony Bennet! GED

  • With regards to Barney's singing style the most accurate adjective is "detached." The music is otherworldly and Barney's voice sort of emerges out of the ethers to say what needs to be said and then fades back into the ethers like a ghost. This combination has made for the most moving and poignant catalogue of songs in electronic music history.

  • @claywag well put-)

  • If you think Barnie doesnt know his words are just words and his voice is just his own you suffer from grandiosity. Name one other band who had a singer step up despite such a loss as Ian. I love the lyrics to this tune and dont care if the meter is a bit off.......it sounds a hell of a lot better than being pro-tuned. Besides the tune is just about shagging and masturbation. He never claims to be Johnny Marr so the jangling guitar probably did take a bit to get down.

  • As much as I love Bernard and his voice, when he says I wish you would applaud louder I wonder if he realized that Japanese audiences supposedly are not as obnoxious as Western audiences.

  • GRANDE NEW ORDER...PENA QUE ACABOU

  • I thought it was my imagination but no this guy sings really bad!

  • absolutely flawed genius

  • He would have been better off spending an awful lot of money on voice lessons and less on guitar picks. His vocals are really bad. This desperately needed backup singers.

  • @soyboy2269 backup singers? are you nuts?! it's part of his idiosyncratic style - but don't bother looking that word up, you wouldn't understand it

  • @chrisnoaro1 I won't bother looking up the word because I already know it's definition. You could have used peculiar or individualistic, but you had to try to make yourself seem more intelligent than me. I suppose I could have tried to be like you and used a lot of big words to describe his singing, but I think bad covers it.

  • @soyboy2269 No, you were originally trying to display some superior intellect on singing technique by criticising Bernard Sumner's technically deficient style and suggesting the need for 'back up singers'! Instead of just saying it didn't appeal to you personally which would have been fine. You sounded like someone who couldn't appreciate the value of a technically imperfect performance. I expect you might think the performance needs better 'choreography' too!!

  • @soyboy2269

Why is it that most people seek out videos of music they enjoy, only to find the inevitable haters who want to just put people down. If you can't get into it just do us a favor and watch Streisand videos or whatever meets your tedious level of perfection.

  • that mother fucker said now well play something else that you dont know. barney is so damn cool. that was from the pumped full of drugs concert.

  • Look at Steve's guns!

  • hook is a boss

  • "It's cost me an awful lot of money in guitar picks this so I wish you would applaud a bit louder"

    *Silence*

  • @Earthling86 He should have spoke japanese

  • @Earthling86 is he kidding?

  • epic.

  • Nice Nick Man . . .

  • I just love the heavy electronic drum beats and synths they mix in together perfectly.

  • @ColumRogers the synth sounds so baroque

  • 0:23, much better than the intro on low-life, or the single

  • The pumped full of drugs tour was a bit too early for Japan and at that time i don't think New Order could understand why everybody wasn't drunk or high, Bernard wasn't happy, that was clear to see,

  • one of the best of NO!!!!

  • My fav song of theirs :)

  • just the beat is amazing alone

  • a remix??

  • In 1985, for a teenager (me) DUB-Vulture was a life-altering experience. It actually introduced me to NO and it only got better from there. I was always sad that there wasn't an official video for this song but this performance is the next best thing. And FTR despite it all Bernard still conveys specific emotion in his voice when he wants to. No problems from me regarding his singing ability.

  • Great song !!

  • genial j ai le cd de ce groupe new order substance 1987 ca rappelle les annees 80 super j adore

  • Super!!!

  • Love this song!!!!

  • New Romantics have always been Goths' enemies.

  • Goths are utter wankers indulging in fake angst and bad poetry... they suck harder than Linda Lovelace in a sucking competition with a black hole.

  • NO really isn't New Romantic.

  • SUPER hiciorrrrr...

  • awesome so reto

  • Sr. teknik88 lo mismo pienso yo, al menos a la fecha, ésta ejecusión de la rola es la mas fregona, se refleja el coraje, energia y por supuesto tremendo coacktail de quimicos que arrastraban mis amigos.

  • can you sing better than bernard? i don't think so...

  • @Padulas

Even Susan Boyle can sing better than Bernard, and she sounds like a fcking tin can.

  • @eiffe

The act of musical expression is a personal one, so if you don't get into it just find something you like, listen to it, and keep your hateful comments to yourself. Just comparing the two is quite idiotic, but it shows you have quite a bit of a self-esteem issue if you have to put down singers of various genres.

  • @radicalsquare

don't get me wrong, i'm a big fan of new order, but Bernard's live singing isn't great. It's not a big deal though, NO is not a fcking gospel choir.

You know what I can't stand is blind fans who think their band is beyond criticism (see DM fans for reference)

PS: Susan Boyle should go to hell anyway

  • @eiffe

    Wanker !!

  • So what?

  • this live version sounds so miserable, but in a good way

  • Esse é sem dúvida o melhor som do New Order...

  • yeah this song is second most popular than bizarre love triangle .... why is it that they did not performed this song in thier live tour? love the song since i've heard it ''86 then.

  • La mejor version de Subculture, excelente

  • remember dancin* at school partys??

  • Substance. 1987. Subculture. Une perle de plus à l'actif de N-o. Merci pour cette vidéo. On espère que N-o ressortira un album un de ces 4... Plus rien depuis 2005... que des rumeurs de brouilles entre Sumner et Hooky... c'est triste... N-o REVENEZ !!!!!

  • Kill 'Em All

    Let God Sort It Out!

  • one of their best songs, just freaking awesome

  • ah jaysus dont try hit notes you cant reach bernie!

  • I think the "Low Life" version of this song much better than the "Substance" one.

  • The Substance version is a shocker, with those warbling backup singers and idiotic studio effects. Plus the bass and guitar parts are mixed so far back you can barely hear them.

Why mess with a good song?

  • This is the great debate I've had many a time ... the Low Life version is perfect ... not sure why they dicked around with it for Substance.

  • it's funny how Barney can remember his lyrics whilst drunk or whathaveyou, but not nowadays when he's sober :)

  • I remember seeing his little video screen with the lyrics on it, and thinking "what the...HE'S CHEATING!!" :)

  • Fun bit of trivia - in the late 80's there was a TV show on CBC Halifax - maybe it was nationwide? - I'm not sure but it was called "Land & Sea", dealt with contemporary issues on the East Coast of Canada and it used the intro of this song as it's opening theme (more specifically I believe it was the 12" version that appeared on Substance)

  • You know what? I believe I'm wrong, it was in fact the original. Momentary lapse, unfortunately WHILE I was typing... :)

  • its ok man

    hapens

the important is you put some thing nice to us, fans o No

  • It's just alcohol...not drugs as many people think. Read David Nolan's book on Sumner & New Order - "Confusion". That documents Barney saying he just got pissed a lot, as well as others backing up that notion.

  • Grand Memories in Chicago Nightclub Scene, Medusas, Limelight, Prologue, Caesars Inn...dam I can not believe it is 23 years later...

  • Simple mind...1985

  • This was the song that got me hooked on New Order waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when! :)

  • On the 'Low Life' version of this song, there is a line that goes 'A View Without A Room'. On the 'Substance' version, they change it to 'A Room Without A View'.

  • this song is better than blue monday.

  • i like both

  • I don't mind Barney's singing on the records. Even live, it's passable most of the time. What I can't stand is his inability to remember his own songs, fluffing lyrics and missing his cues (like the end of this one). There's one vid on here where he stuffs up Love Will Tear Us Apart! You'd think he'd make an effort to get that one right.....

  • Yeah, well I'd love to see you sing whilst high on acid/whatever drugs they were on at the time. I know from personal experience that it's rather hard. Plus, he's NOT a singer....never has been a 'good' singer.

  • heroin and cocaine

  • That's why Barney is an inspiration to me for singing, lol. It's (synth) rock anyways, anything goes.

  • 1985. Damn, I fel old.

  • pumped full of drugs....like they should!!! Love them....Bernards voice is so fucking beautiful....

  • best of the bunch great band

  • This song makes me feel funny inside.

  • My favorite New Order song EVER! :)

  • i second this statement. this is the best new order song, hands down. it is mind altering.

  • ditto!

  • This is my favorite song by them

  • brilliant

  • Soo why dont you go and watch Bon Jovi or Def Leopard vids on you tube then?

  • The song does have an '80s sound, but the vocal melody is too good to not like. Give it a few more chances and you'll realize this is way better than the Pet Shop Boys or The Human League.

  • sublime!!

  • its true hes not a great singer live, kind of goes in the wrong key.... still legendary band

  • 4490red; you're fucking right!!! Pierre

  • From the best of all New Order albums. I have this on vhs and still watch it. Even though its old it still sounds better than at least half of the crap out there today. Truly an historic band in an historic time.

  • Hi! Music is just great, lead singer Bernard is in his own way, fantastic. You hear no such great songs nowadays, in the 80s it was so different. Classic!

  • okay the music is good but the lead singer sounds terrible!

  • Might have something to do with the fact he's almost certainly completely high on acid.

  • You are not a New order / Joy Division fan..This is why we like them..because he sounds like that at times...

  • i love this song

  • i think edd got a lot of abuse at this gig!

  • I love this music, but didin't understand the lyric well.

  • This era marked the intoduction to The Dance generation

  • 1985 was a hilarious time.

  • are you fucking kidding me? the vocals in this performance are excellent

  • After listening to this video multiple times, I still find the vocal quite good. I don't hear anything that bad. I don't know what some of you expect really, if it's the exact vocal from the studio recordings that you want, then I really don't see the point in seeing a live show. I'm not saying that it's ok to totally suck, but I honestly find Barney's singing good here.

  • @canuck21 Well said :) I don't think there was anything wrong with Bernard's vocals. He was always natural and I loved the majority of his performances. I also always loved his live singing much more than the album versions. Everyone has a bad day, but rarely I ever heard him not sing good. He's awesome ! :) Aw, I would have applauded louder, and I was 4 at that time !! ;p

  • Yes? a great band in pop/dance 80. For New order this song is my favorite with Cérémony . The band is very différent that Joy Division but Barney keep the essential essens of cold wave. Thank you for vidéo

  • The vocals in this video were absolutely meant to sound the way they do. If you think any differently you're crazy. This is a brilliant song, listen to the lyrics and try to understand what they are trying to portray.

  • favorite new order song, thanks for uploading this.

  • I love new order. But there is no way to deny that Barney made engough money at least to take some singing lessons... But studio can make miracles !

  • That is what made new order original no fucking vocalizing bullshit or processed vocals...pure fucking bernie summner!

  • He sung it really bad here, but everything else was top notch.

  • Hey, this song is from video called" pumped full of drugs", so is it really so hard to understand, why the singing is ....how do i put this....not so great...?

  • i am a huge new order fan, yeah his singing takes time getting used to but when you put it all together its unique..new order great band

  • Brilliant. One of their best songs.

  • a lead singer who cant fuckin sing, so very NO so very factory, Irony i think its called, fuck me I'm starting to sound like a student cunt

  • Very hot performance!!

  • btw this is a fucking brilliant performance of this song. nice and loud.

  • Gret band, great song and worst singer in the universe. They managed somehow to decrease his negative input in the studio albums but they couldn't cheat in live performances. This guy simply can't sing! Not only this song and this performance. Check this page and find ONE proper performance of him. I'm sorry for that beecause I really like New Order but it deasn't make me deaf. TOTAL DISASTER!

  • I do agree that he's not a very good singer but somehow, it doesn't bother me. I actually like his singing and I do like the live performances very much. It's like Keanu Reeves; bad actor but I still like watching him very much.

  • Fully agree. As I said, I really like NO but I can't stand listening Barney fighting his vocal limitations.

  • Actually, I think I know the reason I like Barney's singing. Imagine someone else singing NO's songs. I can't see anyone else being able to give the same coldness and detachment to the vocal. Barney's limit gives him this uniqueness. The fist time I ever heard of NO, I thought that the vocal was kind of monotonous and yet it sounded very special, unique and strangely pleasant to listen to.

  • As I mentioned: sound engineers made Barney's vocal "listenable" on the NO's studio albums which I like very much. Live performances are always catastrophies for me. I would rather distinguish monotonous singing from flatten singing. This makes a big difference and Barney is flattening like hell.

  • Barney's vocal on studio albums is a lot more than just "listenable", it is quite good, at least to my ears. Live, he's inconsistent but when he does get it right, he sounds as good as on the albums. When it's not quite up to par, it's still pretty OK. Like this performance of Subculture, I hear nothing awful with his vocal here, it's pretty good IMO. What do you think of this particular performance?

  • I gave my comment on this particular performance, because here I found perfect example of Barney struggling with his inability to sing accordingly to the music (check from 4:00 till the end of the song). Although NO is one of my favorite bands I can't pretend I can't hear flatten vocal. This guy is talented musician, good showman but simply doesn't have an "instrument" to handle live singing - even within relatively limited scale.

  • Well, it's obvious that I appreciate Barney's vocal much more than you do. I also don't think that his vocal is flat. He may not be in tune sometime but as a whole, I highly enjoy his vocal. I think that when he's more or less sober in a comfortable environment, he sings very well and sounds as good as the studio version therefore I'm not sure that engineers make changes to his vocal that much. Anyway, if you don't like his singing, that's fine, we all have different taste and perceptions.

  • I love New Order live clips from the '80s.

  • best version of the best song from the best band.

    Simply brilliant.
