I wish I'd been part of the session too! My Dad recalls hearing the song back in the 50s even before Donegan sang it, with the line "Sherriff John B/Take pity on me" which I've never heard in any recorded version. Does it ring any bells with you Raymond?
While I am not Raymond,I can attest to the fact that the line you have mentioned was indeed collected by Lee Hays when he had rescued this song from relative obscuriy after visiting Nassau.
I once worked in a cruise ship sailing around the Bahamas. The islands were great, but after a week eating the slop (white rice and hot sauce), bathing in an impossibly small chamber, life-saving drills at random times, and sleeping in a bunk above a Greek lounge pianist who watched TV in speedos all day in the cabin, I "wanted to go home"! ha ha
This is simply priceless...to bear witness to all of the contagious fun of music and community shared...and what better song to accomplish this than
"The Wreck of The John B". Many thanks for sharing this latest installment in your series of snippets of sessions with The Hong Kong Folk Society,Raymond.
