I have been to Hagerstown Speedway after the crash( about 2000). The gate was still like that. Looking at google maps it still is. I used to go to Winchester Speedway in Virginia in the late 90's and early 2000's. We had a fatal crash with similar circumstances in 1995. (Mike Clore was his name.) The next year the track layout was changed to prevent a repeat.
@smashpede That's still where the haulers pull into the pits, but they have a swing gate that is closed during the races, so if the gate is shut and you didn't know better you wouldn't even know there was a gate there.
@pokemaniac908 The opening is definitely not there. I could've sworn there was a swing gate. The haulers still enter the track from the backstretch. Check out the overhead on Hagerstown's website, no opening on the backstretch,
@ClubWago yea, thay should put in a swing gate, that would be smart. but no, they still go in through the same opening. I was there Sunday for Octoberfest, and they were using it. Search "CasyMers41 2011 octoberfest" and watch. youll see it in the highlights.
It's pretty much the track's fault for being unsafe the way they put the wall like that. There's a lot of safety flaws with tracks like this and they always make that same exact mistake only to be corrected when something like this happens.
Im 16 right now and I race late model and I had a wreck exactly like this.I came out of the turn and clipped the left fender and nailed the exit opening and I hit it so hard alittle bit of my chassis was lodged into my engine block it took about 20 minutes to get me out of the car.I'm happy to still be alive.
Gates/Openings on the back straight away or ANY straight away spells trouble...I cant understand why they even put them in. put the entrance where its safe maybe? not at the end of the straightaway where cars are at top speed ....stupid stupid.
He got exactly what he deserved for that bullshit blocking.
