@armyqpzm its almost like a digital version of usb but its way better overall in my opinion its very useful for audio and video streaming like if i plug my old sony handy cam in with it i can actually control my camera from my computer definitely look into it if you plan on any recording=) it generally goes by the code IEEE1394

These packages are a good idea. When I was starting out I had some hit and miss purchases when building my studio. If a package like this was available 6-7 years ago I would have bought it.

I want to create a home recording studio..looking to spend less than $1k. I think I know what I need to get...but can't decide which options.

Which is better for the price, quality and ease of use.

1 - USB/Firewire recording to pc

or

2 - record to machines like TASCAM?

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

you cant do portable recording with this set and pc laptop unlike with mac laptop, since pc laptops dont have a 6 pin firewire and pcmcia firewire cards wont give enough volts

To record portable all you need is the mic,a 48V Ppower supply run from a 12V battery then to a balun for an unbalanced feed to your recorder or buy a field recorder with XLR/48V but this gets expencive,as a field recorder most laptops dont last more than a couple of hours so not good when your out all weekend making a podcast about bushcraft/survival or astro-photography, my system Rode NT1a/psu/balun-Sony MZ-RH1 MD recorder (16/44.1)PCM.

This is pretty sik, but it comes with Inspire. That only has 2 preamps and 4 inputs so its a little iffy.
