  • Yes, there are three best version :)

Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Nikki Yanofsky.

I surely recommend each of them.

  • @aprilsir And Amy Winehouse! :) its also great

  • Uhm, it's hard to choose among Ella, Sarah and Amy! I'd like to know who is at the drum and at the doublebass in this version. Thanks'

  • @geminivirgo1 Please stop compare two icons of music history as Ella and Sarah with the mediocrity.

  • @geminivirgo1 the legendary Roy Haynes

  • @PeterAliha Ohh, that's incredible! I sow him in Perugia(Italy) 2 years ago with Corea and McBride and he appeared the youngest of all!

  • amy's version is better, i think

  • @nicorichie ahahahah

  • @nicorichie dude i love amy winehouse's voice, but her arrangements dont tend to work out a lot of the time i feel, and her version of lullaby of birdland u can hardly hear her cause of the horns playin ovr her.

  • @nicorichie no offence but i think this verion is in every sense better than amy's. jazz is interesting that we hear not just singers and instrumentalists, but we also hear the dynamics-- how singers respond to the instrumentalists and vice versa, in few seconds to formulate the note that follows one after one. and sarah's version is a good example to show this.

  • hahaaaahahahaaahaha cool!

  • Amy brought me here a while ago, and to Ella's version too. But somehow after listening to both versions a couple of times, I found myself singing and dancing around to Sarah's version and totally loving it, while Ella's version just didn't do that for me. Both amazing singers tho.

  • well that was horrible

  • @SargentSadist That is the great thing about YouTube. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I loved it, you thought it was horrible and we both expressed our opinions. Just out of curiosity, do hate this song, or do you just hate Sarah's version?

  • @MrRaceRealist You get an epic clap for this calm and collected comment. (unlike the other two idiots above you who immediately started cursing him out) especially though judging from his name, you can tell he's just trolling. But seriously epic clap for you.

  • @SargentSadist stupid fuck faggot penis idiot twat shit faggot killer bieber lover

  • @SargentSadist if this is horrible what is gaga then?

  • I think Sarah's version is better than Ella's version. Ella's version doesn't quite emote the lyrics as well as Sarah's version. Sarah really communicates the song better. Also Sarah's version has more depth and has more bird like sounds.

  • I don't know if it's the best for me(I think I prefer Ella's).. but it doesn't mean it isn't amazing!

  • Acording to one of the first pics in the vid, she was born in 1946 and died in 1950. Only 4 years old! LOL!!!

  • @TheGreatShidax No that's an album of early recordings from 1946-1950. But I know you were joking.

  • My jazz band isnt cool enough to do this -___-

  • これが本家か。Good!!!

  • Outra negra maravilhosa e sua incrível capacidade de emocionar!

  • the best is of " theROBUSTOS"

  • piękne :)

  • @evilmonk900 same dude wow same school?

  • @Vinvolve its matt vinny....

  • je la chance en ce moment en musique et c'est trop dur !

  • singing this in class, and surprisingly a friend of mine asked "You know that song?"

    i was pleasently surprised. i'm 18 and she's 23.

  • Sarah Vaughan, la plus belle voix, la plus belle femme, merci d'avoir existé

  • Amy mejoró todas versiones que hizo, DEP!!

  • The Indianapolis Chilrens Choir brought me here. were singing a version of it this year

  • Thank you Amy for directing me hear. I hear her influences in the intro and october song of frank <3 beautiful

  • i love the vocalizing parts most!!!

  • look up Nikki Yanofsky

  • Damn this shit swings!!!!

  • "Lullaby Of Birdland" is a great classic by the marvelous Sarah Vaughan. Thank you for uploading it.

@MessiChokesAgain: I would agree with anyone who feels that Vaughan's rendition is the definitive version of this song (1952; music composed by George Shearing; lyrics by George David Weiss under the pseudonym "B. Y. Forster.")

On my channel, I have uploaded my video of Sarah Vaughan's gorgeous "Eternally."

  • love.

  • your opinion aint so humble , you are correct

  • shes so amazing

  • Ella's versions better :/ but thats my humble opinion lol

  • @DrugWhore1 I used to think Ella's was better because my mind kept telling me "Ella is perfect and no one is better than her, so no matter how much you like Sarah's version, it can't possibly be better than Ella's". But when I objectively listen to both version and put my love for Ella to one side, I realise that I like Sarah's version more and I don't know why. Also I notived that Sarah's version has way more views than Ella's version and this is VERY INTERESTING because Sarah is lesser known

  • @MessiChokesAgain The reason Sarah's version has way more views may have something to do with curiousity by association with Amy Winehouse, who used part of Sarah's scat on this song as the intro on her 'Frank' album. I've noticed a lot of AW fans have gained an interest in her music. Personally, Ella's version is my favourite, but I can't fault this rendition. I love her phrasing, I love the tempo and the improvisation. Both rendition are masterpieces.

  • @bolder2009 Yes but even before Amy's death, Sarah's version had more views. Trust me, I've been listening to both versions way before Amy died. I'm not saying that this makes Sarah's version better. I'm just saying it is interesting that Sarah's has more views even before Amy died. But I love Ella's version too. I think the reason I like Sarah's more is because it seems more human. Ella is so good that sometimes her voice seems like it comes from another alien planet.

  • @MessiChokesAgain Well its funny you say that because a lot of people feel Sarah is the one whose voice is from an alien planet. Didn't Sinatra once say that Sarah had become so good that it made him want to slit his throat? Very extreme thing to say. Her technique made other great singers look like amatures. Mel Torme, thought she had the greatest vocal instrument of any singer in the popular field who ever lived. But Ella's voice and talent was truely beyond this world, matched by her humility

  • @MessiChokesAgain I wish someone could upload Sarah's version of 'Star Dust'. It used to be on youtube. The catalogue of so vast. This lullaby of birdland is on the album she recorded with Clifford Brown, which many Jazz critics regard as one of the best vocal Jazz records ever made. It could simply be that this is considered the definitive rendition. Although Sarah is widely admired, her style is less successfully imitated by Jazz singers.

  • I agree with you actually, and i have heard some of Sarahs others songs and their just impecable, their beautiful, shes very talented. i just like ella's version for this song better, but Sarah has her own good set of songs no one can sing better than her, their just beautiful.

  • Amy loved Sarah, I and see why. Sarah has such a rich voice, that reminds me of warm coffee

  • Love it !!

Check my blog, on my channel pls.

  • she has the perfect voice!

  • Maybe she isn't as well known or popular in today's world of music, but in her lifetime she was recognised by her peers for the genius that she was, including Ella Fitzgerald who called her "the world’s greatest singing talent.”

  • beautiful voice ..pure singer

  • Sarah Vaughan generally doesn't get the praise she deserves. She had amazing range, a beautiful instrument and flawless judgement. And having double-checked by re-listening to a few other versions of this song that I've always loved (yes really!), I agree with DangerFlange, this version of the song probably is the best :-)

  • omg is there a way to turns off reactions on every video? all those reactions ruin the song for me!

  • im singing this song in chorus this year, and im in the 7th grade... but i really do like this song.. though i do still rather emo music...

  • Que virtuosismo, que rápido cambia de voz soprano a contralto sin ningún esfuerzo!!!

  • The scatting was just so perfect

  • "Ava was the morning, now she's gone, she's reborn like Sarah Vaughan. I sang a lullaby of birdland everynight" RIP AMY. s2

  • @MrEvilFellow October Song!! Love it LOTS MIss ya Amy <3<3<3

  • oh sush you teenage jazz hipsters, give me a break

  • Beautiful.

  • @Rihaddict Musically this is superior. I love many different genres of music, but whether you like it or not jazz is musically superior to many other styles of music.

  • S U B L I M E....................!

  • @Rihaddict sounds good to me =)

  • @Rihaddict yes i see..i am veryyy passionate about music as well..its the topic of many discussions i have with my friends..like i said it is my life...well i respect your point of view and i don't consider mine any better than anyones..just different..believe me i try to be understanding..its just that..if i feel strongly about something..like this..which i feel verryy strongly about..like u said i will also try to push =)

  • @Rihaddict sure..thanks for the consideration

  • @Rihaddict no again..i am not trying to sound better..but some people actually find cursing offensive..like i do because i think its unnecessary

  • @Rihaddict i dont mean to sound as if i am better than anyone because of the music i listen to..i just personally feel that alot of the music out right now doesnt contain the same quality as music like this..i have standards means that i hold music to a standard...i believe music should have quality..because its such an important part of life..at least my life..

  • Comment removed

  • @Rihaddict excuse me..but if u recall in ur prior statement..u were the one to say "people like u take music too seriously"..so please dnt dish it out if u cant take it urself!

  • If someone has the Dexter Gordon version of this song please upload it!!!

  • @MrArrpee Dexter Gordon and Milt Jackson *

  • @Rihaddict and music is my life so it is something i take very seriously..and i make no apologies for that

  • @Rihaddict you're right music does change and I have no problem with that..but it doesn't mean it changes for the better..I don't care what anyone says..the quality of music and a lot of other things too, like tv, etc. has plummeted. A lot of the music today lacks melody, originality..and oh yea and substance too..I don't care for it..its obvious the majority doesn't appreciate real music like this (and yes there is such a thing)..i think ppl like u shudnt be assuming n getting defensive

  • I LOVE this version!

  • i'm 14 and i love this type of music!

  • Awesome. There never eas better recorded.TY danger for posting.

  • her scatting is something serious!!!!

  • oh how i wish i listen to more jazz...

  • I'm a realy cool person, because i'm 12 and i listen too jazz instead of rihanna. And i'm telling you guys about it, because i'm a rare teenager these days. Don't you think i'm cool and all because i think jazz is better? I believe jazz is the elite music wich only smart and intelligent people share and i'm part of it now. I'm so awesome.

  • Holy shit this is great!

  • 22 idiotic moronic imbiciles without ANY HEARING CAPABILITIES Y WUD U CLICK ON SOMETHING KNOWING THAT U DONT LIKE IT OR SECRETLY LIKE IT OR U WOULDNT HAVE CLICKED ON IT N E WAY OR U WOULDNT HAVE LOOKED IT UP IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i want to dance to music like this at my high school dances sometimes...but we all know that's not going to fly with the other kids.

  • @DontEatChalk Yeah, they wouldn't know what good music was if it hit them in their faces!

  • @DontEatChalk ii know, right? i like pop and rock, really i do, but sometimes you need to break out Sarah Vaughan or Peggy Lee,and just dance, right?

  • @DontEatChalk WTF NERD! KE$SHA FOR LIFE. Bout right?

  • @NDguy191 lol pretty much unfortunately :P

  • Wow, her phrasing here sounds VERY Ella. It almost like it is Ella, and someone used software to transpose the key lol.

  • @midnitehour1 When Ella Fitzgerald was asked who she listened to for her own enjoyment, she said "Sassy." So maybe Ella's phrasing is like Sassy's. ;-)

  • @dunnk90 lol true. i love the comradely between the two.

  • I'm 14 and I hardly listen to anything else besides old time rock n roll, jazz, rhythm & blues, etc. I wish I LIVED in the past.

  • @mscinematic40 I'm 15, but I don't feel the need to announce it just because I'm listening to old music. Anyways, good taste in music, I'll give you that. I still wouldn't want to live in the past, there's some good music now. At least I have jazz, old time rock and roll, AND the great stuff now (not any of that hip of stuff though)

  • @srs32896 lol u just DID announce it but ok. But I thought it was appropriate with everyone being so stereotypical over teens. There's still stuff now. But only SOME. Not as timeless as this kind of jazz. So yeah. I would want to live in the past. Times overall were simpler and sweeter. Not that I would really know, but it was an amazing time for movies, musicals, hollywood acting, everything!

  • @mscinematic40 Haha, I announced it to prove I knew what I was talking about. Yeah, but everyone kind of assumes teens don't appreciate good music.

  • Wow! I see why Anita Baker and Toni Braxton are compared to this artist. My very first time hearing her and I like her voice. She's very influential.

  • It pains me to say this but I feel Lauren Hill is the reincarnation of Sarah Vaughn. if you look at Sarah in her youth the two are Identical to each other. Its like people who look simular to stars have a chance of being stars. It is not only in physical resemblance it is more like in energy demeanor and so forth. its recycle rebirth of the stars. Ja Rule was of the likeness of TUpac in his demeanor and energy look very close you ll notice it.

  • beautifull!

  • lovely...nice scatting

  • I have to learn this. My favorite tune because of her. Masterful! elegance, creativity, unlimited ability is The Divine One!

  • I have to learn this. My favorite tune because of her. Masterful! elegance, creativity, unlimited ability is The Divine One!

  • Who cares who doesn't like it? Why do people even comment on other people's contrary opinions? Shuddupalready. Vote it down, I say. Who wants this sort of comment right on top about this fabulous clip? Tsssss...

    Looooooooooove Sarah.

  • there are other versions of this tune?? what?? lol I love Divine One

  • Wonderful!!!

  • i do agree =)

  • The Great Sir George Shearing wrote this song and is playing in the background.......RIP ......Sir George...!!

  • The Great Sir George Shearing wrote this song and is playing in the background.......RIP ......Sir George...!!

  • I came down with a bad case of otitis this week and I can't stand listening to music because of the pain, but Sarah Vaughan is an exception. My ear actually feels better when I hear her wonderful voice. The woman is a miracle-worker.

  • Sarah - The class ONE together with Ella :)

  • magnificent , pure talent

  • OP, you are a class act!

  • That's so great! I have to play it again.

  • pure jazz, SMOKIN!

  • do you think that this version of the song is pure jazz?

  • beautiful!!!!

  • this is my audition music for a high school (:

  • CLASSIC. SCAT SARAH...SCAT!

  • Wow I just noticed the chorus .9 has the same melody as Amy Winehouse's October Song's chorus

"Ava was the morning, now she's gone

    she's reborn like Sarah Vaughan

In the sanctuary she has found

    birds surround her sweet sound"

  • @CtKoth Yes, that song was based on this one :)

  • @CtKoth "I sing a Lullaby of Birdland every night" Yup, I just noticed that too. 3:09-3:17 Amy did the same scat in that intro before "Stronger Than Me". I know Amy said she listened to Sarah Vaughan a lot but I never really heard her influence until now

  • Does anybody has a Dexter Gordon version of this song? Please post it!!!

  • AMAZING WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE.

  • IMO, The best vocal rendition of this song. I also like some instrumentals too.

  • @amorin1 Even better than George Shearing's original?

  • EN LA MÍA TAMBIÉN!!

  • amazing song :) !

  • I love my Ella, but this is the song that made me notice Sarah. Sarah did take this song to a newer level with the scat. Both women's vocal were phenomenal.

  • Awesome! TY DangerFlange.for posting!

  • Lovely! I don't understand how you can click on the dislike-button for this video!

  • Fantastic

  • Sarah's voice is so pitch-perfect!!!

  • To the memory of George Shearing, who passed on earlier this week, and who helped bring this classic tune into the world!

  • @arejayseeottawa LOVE Shearing and Nat King Cole's version of Pick Yourself Up! Probably my favorite version of that tune!

  • Great talent like her duets.

  • I used to feed Sarah Vaughan's cats when she was a say, and I have to tell a secret about her. She would eat catshit. I'm serious.

  • Hey, wow I just heard both versions and they sound almost completely the same lol. Beautiful versions both of them but Ella's goes high as Sarah's goes low. The arragement is different on both. I like Sarah's better.

  • Hey, goodbye George Shearing and ty for this song.

  • Eh? She died when she was 4 years old? LOL! Is that a typo, or did the person actually mean to write those dates?

  • Today is a sad day this monster of jazz, partile to the upstairs taking his special talent of playing the piano on top to navigate. be at peace, George Shearing that God puts them in good stead and let his soul rest in the holy fathers in Christ. He died of heart failure on February 14, 2011 in New York in 91 years of age. xavier Curitiba Parana Brazil

  • Makes me feel really comfy on valentines day!

  • As good as it gets. TY DangerFlange for posting.

  • although im a little young to have really bin a part of her eara. i just would like to say thank god i discovered her. she is a gem her voice is perfect where are people like this today

  • This is awesome! Also luv Mel Torme's version!!

  • awesome song but how do you fall asleep with this?

  • Beautiful rendition with wonderful moments but Ella's serene interpretation's got more aesthetic unity and melodic imagination & has to be regarded IMO as the 'classical' one. Anyway both divas are equally virtuose.

  • The best...period.

  • Who's that at 2:55? ; )

  • Sass is my fave! Deeper interpretation of everything she sang.

  • Great interpretation with a classy ending
