Unlike everyone else, I'm not gonna debate about what did and didn't happen during her reign. I'm just going to say she was a revolutionary queen who changed the world for the better.
In reference to a few of the comments, what monarch in history wasn't cruel? Of course they must have felt great love for their country but they did what they had to in order to survive and this evidently led to a lot of brutal acts committed. Can't really relate this to modern-day monarchs mind...
I would do a little more research if I were you. Queen Elizabeth I tortured and murdered hundreds of Catholics in the most horrific ways imaginable. She was just as cruel as her half sister, the bloody Queen Mary. However, since victors write history and the Anglican Church was victorious in England, we don't hear about her dark side as much as we should. Anyway, I'm not saying she wasn't a great Queen. She was. However, she was also very cruel-- she probably had to be in order to survive.
@starquant. She was speaking "The heart of a lion,", in metaphor terms, and she said she was her father's daughter in order to gain the love of the people since her father had not been dead that long, she obviously couldn't say she had her mother's heart, as she knew what the people still thought of her. Elizabeth had to gain the people's love, something her sister Mary wasn't able to do, so Elizabeth knew she had to do it.
I love Queen Elizabeth's story she proved that even women are fit to rule everyone and she ddnt criticize other people's religion and she was loved by her people and she was loved back by them. I wish i could be as strong of a woman as her.. shes my idol and inspiration:P ive known this movie long since i was a little girl and it made such a big impact in my life
@Roza27Santini In response to your comment, I wish to add... When she came to the Throne, England was Bankrupt. When she expired... England was the richest country in Europe.

@KatiaTiutiunnik queen elizabeth was not cruel >.< she ruled out of love for her own country "her true love" this is why she is called the virgin queen who is married to her own country. She basically put her country first and ruled according to her conscience on what is good for her country not by their religion. Her sister mary tudor is the one who is cruel who acted upon hatred and revenge against protestants in order to restore the catholic faith that her father pushed away to remarry
@Roza27Santini This was written by a respected authority on Britain's history: "Forget about Cate Blanchett’s excellent portrayal. Queen Elizabeth was as cruel as any ruler could get. If Queen Mary brought England back to Roman Catholicism, Elizabeth suppressed it in the cruelest way possible. She had thousands of Catholics in Ireland and England murdered. She was also heavily involved in slave trading movement as she sponsored slavers to capture Africans."

@KatiaTiutiunnik Actually, by the standards of her time, she was quite tolerant. Catholicism was a vile religion responsible for wholesale torture and murder- and Elizabeth rightly feared it. As for slavery- she wasn't alone in this- it was practised by Christians, Jews and Muslims- and still is.
@Roza27Santini sorry but what you have said about Queen Elizabeth I in about criticising people's religion is not true. Elizabeth I ordered many very horrible things to be done to innocent Catholics because they weren't Protestant. Even religious nuns were dragged out of their orders and killed in public. This movie makes light of the horrible things that occurred under Elizabeth's rule; England has a very dark history when it comes to the persecution of Catholics but we tend to not care.
It is not wonderful, for a woman to triumph so adequately, in a world that wanted her the fail?. Was it not Elizabeth, herself, that said "Although I have the feeble body of a woman, I am my fathers daughter, and have the heart of a Lion?. A womans body is not "Feeble" for if it was so, the human race would not survive !. A woman does not have the mind of an animal either and is quite capable of success, when those around her, want her to succeed. Men do not want female Usurpers, et tu, brute?.

Cate deserved the Oscar for her outstanding performance. Too bad she didn't receive it.

@ Roza27Santini I would go further - she proved that women are often much better than men at governing. A point well made in this fantastic film.

@Roza27Santini The world's history would surely have been much different and dare I say less barbaric if the likes of Elizabeth were in rule.
