Promiscuity isn't about having sex with someone when you aren't in a relationship, society can interpret things how they want, but the word promiscuous, by definition, means sex with many partners in casual relations. It's meaning sex for the sake of sex, not sex without a committed relationship. However, the people who've been having sex, as you described here, aren't Straight Edge. They're "sober" which is what we'd like to call poseurs.

I'm straight edge myself, I drink coffee daily and that's it, no drugs or anything, but sex was just thrown in with being a vegetarian as a new type of straight edge. To me, Straight Edge is no smoking, no alcohol, & no drugs. I don't sleep around but I'm not one who believes that you can't have sex to be sXe. As long as you don't just go around having one night stands or having sex w/just anyone, you can still claiim sXe and have sex. A sellout would be someone who "claimed" it & then later changed their mind. It's a lifelong commitment to abstain from those things. Not just a trend or something you do for a little bit.

The thing is, Ian Mackaye never really talked about sex in the song "the straightedge." It's very clear how he feels about smoking and drinking. "Don't drink, don't smoke, don't fuck," is what he said later. It's all about keeping yourself clean. If you fuck a random hooker, your more likely to get AIDS than with your friend who you've had a crush on for 3 years and you know doesn't sleep around. It's a hard thing to put a thumb on. And the dude you fucked is an idiot.

Anyways, I think you should start caring less about what others are doing and start worrying about yourself. Straight Edge is a personal choice. Who gives a fuck if someone else is SE or not. It's for you and you alone. You know what you are and that's all that matters.

sXe is against CASUAL sex. If you're in a serious relationship and have sex with your significant other, it's not breaking edge at all. But that kid having one night stands means he isn't edge at all, and is just claiming it. Or he's half-assing it, like TeamPoser101 said. Half-ass equals not being it all all. He's just drink/smoke/drug free if that's the only think he breaks, not edge.

at first i was going to bomb on you but then your argument arose. youre right, you cant try and make loopholes in the argument. if you have a one night stand you broke edge and youre a sellout. if you have a fling, youre an even bigger sellout because youre slapping the movement in the face by repeatedly doing something wrong. dont lie and call yourself straight edge. if youre that pathetic and attached to the title just be drug free. almost as cool. almost.

Honestly, it's just like religion. They pick and choose what verses of their bible that they want to follow. Same with straight edge as well...people pick and choose what parts of straight edge they want to live by.
Honestly, in my opinion I think that if you aren't going to go along with something the whole fucking way, don't half ass it either. You're either straight edge or you're not. Just like you are either a religious person or you're not.

Straight edge most definitely does not include promiscuous sex. I hate to dictate to 15 year old kids what straight edge means but it's common sense. Yes, alot of kids who claim the edge do sleep around. sXe means different things to different people. For me it's about respecting my body and living a healthy life. And this doesn't include destructive behavior like drug and alcohol use and casual sex. And no, I'm not some 15 year old kid. I'm in my mid 30s and have been sXe for 20 years.

Edge has nothing to due with the song Out Of Step. It has everything to due with the song Straight Edge. Which says nothing about sex. A lot of people who choose to be edge choose to be abstinent or non-promiscuous but it has nothing to do with it. it wasn't until after the first youth crew era that some people started mistakingly claiming that to be edge you had to be non-promiscuous. Also Flings are still promiscuous. Having sex with someone you have no relational interest in is promiscuity
