Nether portal fix: Go into the nether with obsidian and a lighter and build another portal at the corresponding point for the welcome centre, in relation to Macs' place. 1 block in the nether = 16 blocks in the over-world. You can then go in and out of the new nether from the welcome centre, and not end up at Macs. This is how to do it in single player, but I'm not sure if the same applies to multi player.

You can also "sleep" in the nether now without your game crashing, I say "sleep" because Notch fixed the problem by simply making the bed explode once you lie down.
