@6013welder. You should! Good metal prep is important for all kinds of welding. Welding dirty metal is like closing a zipper with your shirt tail caught in it. It will work but not as well as it should.
@pberglin Well, in my opinion, I would have to say yes. You can get a stronger weld than the metal itself. This would show itself by the weld ripping out of the metal.
Grinding also removes oil from the mill finish metal surface.
My preference is to bead blast first, inspect for rolling stress lines/striations in the surface, if I see those, then grind.
I also wipe the surfaces with isopropyl alcohol, and wipe down the filler rod, too.
I tried acetone, but it leaves an oily residue.

@CatchUpToMe Just about any welding supply store with have the half and full jacket. You can also find them online. I got this one at Praxair.

If you prep properly, can the weld ever be stronger then the material itself?
I happen to like that shiny look right after you use the grinder. Any clear finish you would recommend that would keep the shiny metal from rusting?
